Turbo-cannons - While turbo-cannons never run out of ammo, your continuous use of them does degrade your shield performance. Shields cannot regenerate while your are firing your turbo-cannons.
Missile Launchers - Your ship is equipped with only four missile launch tubes, no matter what the rank of your missile magazine. Better magazines simply hold more missiles for reloading. The number below and left of the launch tube status is the total missiles you have remaining. Be aware that reloading is faster when fewer tubes need servicing. Fire missiles by clicking the right mouse button. If you drag the cursor across multiple targets while depressing the button your targeting computer will attempt to lock on and launch a missile at each of the targets.
Proton Torpedoes -
Shields - Shields reduce (but do not prevent) the damage your hull takes from enemy fire. Shields can also regenerate but this is very power-intensive so they only regenerate when the turbo-cannons are not firing. For this reason it is a good practice to pulse-fire your cannons rather than using continuous fire for the entire combat. Shield strength is indicated by the thick circle around your ship's portrait. While using Power Conversion to increase your guns, be sure to switch to Shields whenever combat enters a lull so your shields get as much regen as they can as fast as possible.
Hull Integrity - When this hits zero you explode, so try to avoid that, m'kay?
Barrel Roll - Press the SPACEBAR at any time to execute a barrel roll, which increases your ships avoidance versus incoming enemy fire.
The four icon hotbar slots to the right of your ship's portrait indicate the options available to you that depend on special non-standard equipment. This is mostly military-grade hardware and software.
1 and 2: Power Conversion - If your ship is equipped with a Power Conversion Module you can reroute power, during combat, to Weapons or Shields, or neither. The two options are toggles so once turned on you must press the button again to turn it off. Use of either reduces effectiveness of the other.
3: Electronic Warfare Pod - If your ship is equipped with one, you can use it to scramble all electronic targeting systems for 10 seconds, making it impossible for your enemies to get a weapons lock.
4: EMP Generator - Use this to shut down enemy shields and weapons. Be careful, as the EMP will also disable friendly ships that are close to you!
There are basic "maps" that are reused for many different missions. These can be broken down by map type.
