NPC Guide
Obtaining your signal pearl
Quests and upgrades by order
As you call your NPC fellow, chat at Rendezvous Points, and level them up, your bonds will strengthen and new upgrades and quests will become available. Expect the progression of these things to come in the order below.
•Available after increasing the bond with your fellow a little. You will gain the option to change your fellow to one of three fighting styles at any time at a Rendezvous Point.
•Attacker Style makes a fine fighter, and will receive Double Attack and Counter traits. Healer Style will still attack, but can also cast white magic on both them self and you, and receives Auto-Regen trait. Shield Style will attack and provoke mobs, and receives Undead Killer trait.
Unlisted Qualities
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•Speak with Luto Mewrilah to learn she is searching for a special mirror and wants your help. She'll then offer a list of names for a number of character races and genders. The choice you make will customize the NPC fellow that will soon join you.
•After deciding a name, you can get a few options for your fellow's face. Talk to either Red Ghost (Port Jeuno, G-8), Kuah Dakonsa (Lower Jeuno, H-8) or Akta (Ru'Lude Gardens, H-10) and they will each describe a different face type for the race/gender you chose earlier. Agreeing with the description they give will select that one for your character, so choose carefully.
•Finally, talk to Bheem (Upper Jeuno, F-5) to choose what hair color the fellow will have. When all selections are completed, return to Luto Mewrilah and she will thank you for the helpful information and reward you with a silver ingot.
Girl in the Looking Glass
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•Talk to Luto Mewrilah and she will explain that Laurana is looking for her missing daughter. Find Bheem (Upper Jeuno, F-5) next and speak with him to find out the young girl has gone to Eldieme Necropolis. Head out to Batallia Downs and enter Eldieme Necropolis from G-8. If you are soloing this, it's best to be high enough level to avoid aggro inside.
•You will find a ??? down the stairs at F-9, and examining it will spawn an NM called Namorodo. Your NPC fellow will appear and fight along side you. After the battle, talk to your fellow immediately and he/she will escort the girl back safely. Now return to Luto Mewrilah for a cut scene and quest complete.
Mirror, Mirror
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•Go to Luto Mewrilah for a cut scene in which she says she's received information on a new treasure. Your fellow will show up and say their senses point to San d'Oria, so head over and locate Portaure (Port San d'Oria, H-9) inside Cargo Room B. He'll direct you to Ghelsba Outpost next, and your exact destination is the Hut Door at G-10.
•Come fully geared to fight, because examining the hut door will put you in a Lv.40-cap BCNM against Carrion Dragon. You may enter with 3 people if you wish, but it should be soloable by any Lv.40 job. Part way through the battle, your fellow will show up to help and speed up the fight. When the dragon is defeated, return to Luto Mewrilah and you will finally be rewarded your signal pearl, which allows you to call your NPC fellow once every 20 real life hours.
How to know your NPC:
- There are 4 Rendezvous Points: Ru'lude Gardens (H-10), Port Bastok (J-11), Windurst Waters North (K-10), and Northern San d'Oria (L-10).
- All NPC fellows start at Lv.30, equipped with a one-hand sword and shield.
- Your fellow can be called in almost all zones, the exceptions being towns, BCNM's, level-capped zones, Dynamis, Sky zones, Sea zones, ToAU areas, and Promyvion (aside from the tactics pearl quest).
- If you die, your fellow will disappear. Your fellow will also disappear if you zone to an area they are not allowed to be called in.
- Your NPC fellow, once called, will stay with you for either a set number of enemy kills, or a period of time, whichever is reached first. Both of these limits will increase in time as your bond grows and your fellow levels up.
- The experience points your NPC fellow receives will be based on their level versus the monster's, and the level gap between you and your fellow will not effect their experience. Your fellow will not lose experience if they die.
- You will receive a 30% reduction in your own experience points gained from mobs killed while your fellow is out.
- Party area of effect spells and buffs will not work on your NPC fellow. Single target buffs, as well as cures and status cures will work.
- The bond between you and your fellow will strengthen every time you call them with a signal pearl or tactics pearl, as well as when using the option "Let's chat" via a Rendezvous Point.
- If you drop your signal pearl, you can get a new one from Luto Mewrilah, but the bond with your NPC fellow will greatly decrease for dropping your pearl.
- A greater bond between you and your fellow will in time grant access to new weapon upgrades & headgear options, increase the duration they fight with you, and open new quests to increase your fellow's level cap.
- Your NPC fellow has an A rating in their weapon no matter which you give them, and their skill will always be capped.
- Your fellow's armor will change based on the regional control and dominant influence of a Nation in the area you call them. You must also reach the maximum number of kills allowed for the duration of your fellow's stay.
- As the bond with your fellow increases, you will eventually receive the option to "lock" pieces of their armor at a Rendezvous Point to prevent them from changing. A maximum of 3 out of 4 pieces of armor can be locked over time.
- NPC fellow armor is for stylish purposes only, they will not receive any of the stats on the equipment.
•Weapon upgrade #1 should be available, talk to Luto Mewrilah and see the upgrade chart below.
•Weapon upgrade #2 should be available, talk to Luto Mewrilah and see the upgrade chart below.
Past Reflections
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•Luto Mewrilah believes a book in the Optistery library in Windurst can help her repair the mirror. Travel to Windurst and talk to Tosuka-Porika (Windurst Waters North, G-8) in the Optistery. He requests a favor of you before he will share the book, and you're soon requested to gather a bison steak, icecap rolanberry, San d'Orian tea, white bread, Windurst salad and whitefish stew.
•Gather the lengthy list of goods and trade them to Tosuka-Porika. After the cut scene, return to Luto Mewrilah for another exchange of words, then find Khumo Daramasteh (Port Jeuno, J-8) by the Kazham airship entrance. The bond with your NPC fellow increases!
•New headgear option #1 should be vailable to choose from at any Rendezvous Point.
Tactics pearl mini quest
•This quest of sorts is flagged by calling your NPC fellow at a Rendezvous Point and selecting the "Let's talk about quests" option. If your bond is strong enough, your fellow will say something about being "requested to carry out an investigation of the Emptiness" and that's your sign you've activated the quest.
•Next, go to any Promyvion, enter, and select the Rendezvous Point at the start to call your NPC fellow for free. You then have 45 minutes to find a ??? point which will reward an experience bonus to your fellow and return you to the entrance. During this time, you can also kill mobs and earn experience for your fellow as normal, which will be added to the bonus they receive when you complete your objective. There is a ??? point on 4 floors, and the higher the floor, the more experience you will receive.
Dem ???: Floor 1: (J-12) Floor 2: (E-10) Floor 3:(F-6) or (G-12) Floor 4: (K-8) Mea ???: Floor 1: (F-4) Floor 2: (F-10) Floor 3: (E-7) or (K-9) Floor 4: (I-5) Holla ???: Floor 1: (H-7) Floor 2: (G-9) Floor 3: (E-6) or (L-5) Floor 4: (L-11)
•After selecting the ??? and returning to the entrance, go back to a Rendezvous Point and call your fellow. They will express appreciation and hand you a tactics pearl as thanks. This pearl comes with 4 charges and the reuse time between calls is only 10 minutes. When the charges are gone, the pearl is useless, so feel free to toss it, as dropping the tactics pearl will not hurt your bond like dropping the signal pearl will.
•You may repeat the tactics pearl quest once per real life week (after the conquest tally). If you fail the quest however, it can be re attempted the following day after JP midnight.
Picture Perfect: Limit Quest One
Start NPC: Diederik (Selbina, G-10)
•Before trying to activate this quest, your NPC fellow should be Lv.50, and you should have completed the quest A Pose by Any Other Name for Angelica in Windurst Waters. When these requirements are met, visit Diederik in Selbina and talk to him while your signal pearl is equipped to hear his story how he lost a valuable painting. He wants your help of course, and you'll be given a choice to visit either Angelica in Windurst Waters or Umberto in Bastok Markets. Keep your signal pearl equipped when talking to any NPC for this quest.
•If you picked Angelica: your NPC fellow will go to see Umberto. Speak with Angelica (Windurst Waters N, F-10) for a cut scene in which you communicate with your fellow via your signal pearl. You will be requested to find a Bal Shell. Buy a pickaxe (Upih Khachla sells them, Windurst Waters, H-9) and head to Korroloka Tunnel. Find an Excavation Point and use your pickaxe on it to dig up a Bal Shell, then bring it to Angelica. She'll ask for an Opalescent Stone next.
•If you picked Umberto: your NPC fellow will go see Angelica. Speak with Umberto (Bastok Markets, L-10) for a cut scene in which you communicate with your fellow via your signal pearl. You will be requested to find a Bal Shell. Buy a pickaxe (Boytz sells them, Bastok Mines, H-7) and head to Korroloka Tunnel. Find an Excavation Point and use your pickaxe on it to dig up a Bal Shell, then bring it to Umberto. Now go back to Diederik in Selbina to find that your NPC fellow is in trouble.
•Both paths will point you to Castle Oztroja at this point, so head over and make your way to the Brass Door at I-8. Proceed through to the next map, then go to I-9 and turn east into the courtyard where you will find a Brass Door at the other end. Select it for a cut scene, and then again to enter. Examine the ??? point to spawn the NM Yagudo Muralist, and your NPC fellow will join you for the fight. Depending on your job, Lv.55-60 should be more than safe to solo this.
•Once the NM is defeated, talk to your fellow, then select the ??? once more to obtain the key item Opalescent Stone. Take this stone to Angelica who will in turn give you another key item, Old Woman's Portrait. Finally, talk to Umberto one more time to complete the quest. Your fellow's level cap is now 55!
Blighted Gloom
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•Luto believes there is a rare metal that can repair the mirror, and it's found in a certain type of slime. She will then send you to one of 3 random locations.
- Korroloka Tunnel, the ??? is found at F-9 / F-10 on the map that connects to Western Altepa Desert (same map used for NIN job quest).
- Ordelle's Caves, take the right path after entering and follow it to G-4 to reach the next map, then find the ??? at I-5.
- Ranguemont Pass, simply head to I-9 to find the ???.
•You'll be sent to the lake at G-5 in Jugner Forest now. To reach this area, go to King Ranperre's Tomb and head to K-5 to zone into Jugner Forest. Then head east and find a ??? by the lake. Examine it for a cut scene to complete the quest. The bond with your NPC fellow increases!
•New headgear option #2 should be available to choose from at any Rendezvous Point.
•Weapon upgrade #4 should be available, talk to Luto Mewrilah and see the upgrade chart below.
Regaining Trust: Limit Quest Two
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•Begin this quest by talking to Luto Mewrilah, who informs you that your fellow has been attacked by a monster in Qufim. You'll be sent to see Monberaux (Upper Jeuno, G-10) in the Infirmary to check up on your friend, and then back to Luto again. After a brief cut scene, you'll find your next destination to be Qufim Island.
•Head over as instructed, E-6 on the map to be exact, and look for a Giant Footprint. When you examine it, an NM gigas called Ingaevon will attack you, and your NPC fellow will show up to join you in battle. After an easy victory, speak with your fellow, then report back to Luto. Finally, just talk to Monberaux one more time to complete the quest. Your fellow's level limit is now 60!
•New headgear option #3 should be available to choose from at any Rendezvous Point.
•Weapon upgrade #5 - Talk to Luto Mewrilah and see the upgrade chart below.
Chameleon Capers
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•Speak with Luto Mewrilah to find that a friend of hers has used a magical costume kit to change into a child and can't return to normal form. Naturally, Luto wants your help. Your next stop is Ru'Lude Gardens, where you should find and speak to Muhoho on the upper balcony of the palace at (H-7).
•Now it's off to Bastok for a cut scene with Gelzerio (Bastok Mines, H-7) in Boytz's Knickknacks, followed by a visit to Windurst to talk to Chamama (Windurst Waters N, F-10) in the Rarab Tail Hostelry to receive the key item Dust of Reversion. You're almost done talking to NPC's, just visit Luto one more time for a cut scene.
•You'll be sent on an adventure to Delkfutt's Tower now, so head over, and upon entering, go to J-9 to find a ??? that will initiate a cut scene when examined. You'll find another ??? at I-5 for a second cut scene, then go back to the first ??? you checked. When you examine it this time, the NM Illusory Pot will spawn. Your NPC fellow will appear at the same time to join the fight. After the easy battle, talk to your fellow, then check the ??? one last time for a cut scene.
•Your quest will now be complete, and you will be given a choice of three rare Tactics Manuals, but you can only choose one! Each manual contains a new fighting style for your NPC fellow. Simply talk to your fellow at any Rendezvous Point while the item is in your inventory and they will learn it. Then call them at the Rendezvous Point again and you can select the new style from the job menu. Note that you do not lose the manual once your fellow has used it, so it is possible to bazaar it or trade with friends to acquire and learn all three!
- Tactics Manual of Endurance (improved healing style - Soothing Healer)
- Tactics Manual of Might (improved fighting style - Fierce Attacker)
- Tactics Manual of Fortitude (improved tanking style - Stalwart Shield)
•New headgear option #4 should be available to choose from at any Rendezvous Point.
Blessed Radiance
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•The quest starts at Luto Mewrila, where you discuss a way to save Palometa from her unfortunate curse. After the cut scene, head to Neptune's Spire Inn (Lower Jeuno, J-7) and upon entering, select the first door on your left. A cut scene will follow and you'll be requested to find three key items.
•It's time for some traveling now! Buy a pickaxe, sickle, and hatchet and track down the items in any order you wish:
- Glimmering Mica, excavated in Maze of Shakhrami with a pickaxe.
- Mistroot, harvested in Giddeus with a sickle.
- Lunascent Log, logged in Jugner Forest with a hatchet.
•These items are obtained by finding a random excavation point in Maze Of Shakhrami, harvesting point in Giddeus, and logging point in Jugner Forest. Your NPC fellow must also be present at the moment you attempt to obtain the item, so you must first call them with either a signal pearl or tactics pearl.
•When all three items are in your possession, head to Beaucedine Glacier and locate the small pond at J-7. Examine the "Mirror Pond" spot on the ground for a cut scene. Now return to the room in Neptune's Spire Inn for another cut scene, and finally, back to Luto for one last cut scene and quest complete. The bond with your NPC fellow increases!
•New headgear option #5 should be available to choose from at any Rendezvous Point.
Mixed Signals: Limit Quest Three
Start NPC: Ratoto (Upper Jeuno, I-10)
•When your NPC fellow is nearing Lv.60, you'll need to raise their level cap again. Talk to Ratoto to get this quest started. Your NPC fellow will be acting strangely, so speak with Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8) next to see what you can find out. She'll send you to see Raimbroy (Southern San d'Oria, E-8), so do as required, then report back to her again.
•The quest wouldn't be complete without some traveling. It's off to Beadeaux now, where you'll need to enter the same part of Qulun Dome that you did for your 3rd Limit Break (Whence Blows the Wind). Yes, the part with all the true sight mobs. Once in Qulun Dome, make your way very carefully to the borderline of I-6 / I-7 where you will find a ???. Ruby, Adaman, and Diamond Quadav will all aggro through Sneak, so be cautious and take your time.
•Once you've checked the ???, return to Luto and your quest will be a success. Your fellow's level limit is now 65! At this same time, you will receive a rather weak, single-use 30 minute food item from your fellow as a gift.
Mirror Images
Start NPC: Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
•Talk to Luto for a cut scene, then prepare for a Lv.50 capped fight at Qu'Bia Arena in Fei'Yin. Friends are not allowed into the BCNM, it will be only you and your fellow. This fight can be difficult, so keep the level cap in mind when gearing up, and you'll probably want several yagudo drinks if you're a mage, or hi-potions if you're a melee. If you're RDM, you probably won't need any drinks. Once in Fei'Yin, enter Qu'Bia Arena at K-8. Your enemy will be Vassago, a DRK type demon with the usual DRK spells. The battle time limit is 15 minutes.
•Mages, with the exception of skilled RDM's, will want to set their NPC fellow to Stalwart Shield style and conserve mana for keeping them healed. Your opponent hits hard and you'll use alot of cures on your fellow, so MP regen drinks are a must. Don't be afraid to melee while healing your fellow, mana will be tight and every extra bit of damage helps.
•Melees and tanks will probably do best with a NIN sub job, because you will have to tank Vassago. Bring food appropriate for your job, and you'll probably want your fellow on Fierce Attacker style for the damage. Even with NIN sub, at least several hi-potions will definately be needed, maybe less if your main job is PLD or NIN. Jobs that find soloing to be difficult might want to stock extra meds. Some melees find this fight to be very difficult.
•Vassago can use a special single-target darkness attack called Blighted Gloom, capable of dealing over 400 damage to you. If you're a mage, your NPC fellow should be on shield style to keep hate for this. If your fellow is hit with the Blighted Gloom attack they will receive 0 damage, and instead, counter with a powerful attack called Blessed Radiance. If you're a melee or tank, you will have hate, so it is important to run out of range when you see a message in your log that Vassago is preparing Blighted Gloom. If you are far enough out of range, the attack will be ineffective.
•Hopefully you'll be victorious. When you are, return to Luto and talk to her with your signal pearl equipped for a cut scene, then go to the Neptune's Spire Inn (Lower Jeuno, J-7) and select the first door on the left after entering. The bond with your NPC fellow increases!
•Weapon upgrade #6 should be avialable, talk to Luto Mewrilah and see the upgrade chart below.
•New headgear option #6 should be available to choose from at any Rendezvous Point.
•New headgear option #7 should be available to choose from at any Rendezvous Point.
•Weapon upgrade #7 should be available, talk to Luto Mewrilah and see the upgrade chart below.
•New headgear option #8 should be available to choose from at any Rendezvous Point.
Weapon Chart
• When your NPC fellow is ready for a new weapon, Luto Mewrilah will make a reference to upgrading it, but she will only do it once per upgrade, so watch her chat carefully. The wording of the reference will also change for each upgrade. It's important to make a mental note or keep a list of the last weapon you gave your fellow so you know which upgrade you're currently on. In order to give the weapon to your fellow, trade it to Luto and she will pass it on for you.
