SOE Fan Faire 2007===
I procrastinate. I admit it. So there should be no surprise that at 11:00pm Wednesday night, I was still packing and getting ready for my flight to Vegas. I ran down my checklist of everything I'd need to bring and finally decided that my usual practice of packing light in one carry on wasn't going to work. If nothing else, the entire contents of my close and bathroom were going to require more than one carry on. The fifteen cans of silly string took up a lot more room than I thought they would, too...
I finally fell into bed around 1:00am, blinked, and swore at my clock a few minutes later when the alarm went off. My poor car struggled down the road and I peered around the bags that wouldn't fit in the trunk, back seat, or on the roof.
My little Mazda groaned into the airport and I generously tipped the entire staff of Continental Airlines as the small army made off with my apartment in tow. I heard a small meow from within my carry and noted with satisfaction that I'd packed Yin and Yang in the right bags.
I genuflected my way through security, doing my very best cute and harmless act. Score!! Didn't get patted down once. That's definitely a first and bodes well for the rest of the trip.
The powers that be smiled upon me with a Starbucks about every forty feet along the concourse. Naturally, I stopped at every one of them and got a refresh on my morning chai.
By the time I got to my gate (C43 looks nothing like the mythical C48 gate I THOUGHT I was going to, although it will take you straight to Hogwart's), I'd seen at least fifty copies of The Deathly Hallows floating around. The women displayed it proudly, of course, while the straight men tried to disguise it by taking off the dust jackets.
I had a brief moment of consternation when I discovered that I was seated right next to the cabin door. That wasn't fair; these flight attendants didn't even know me yet!
The flight went really smoothly, in spite of the flight staff having to isolate me from the rest of the passengers when I blurted out that "OMG Harry DIES!!!" In retrospect, it probably wasn't the smartest idea to tell everyone on board that Harry dies and everyone becomes enslaved. Oops?
We landed in Vegas and the flight attendants threw me off the plane with warnings to never fly with them again. I tried to explain that it wasn't my fault that Hermoine married Draco, but they wouldn't listen. Oh well. Lots of other airlines. Good thing I fly home with US Air.
Before we even finish taxiing in, I've gotten text messages from Taea and Dar. They've both landed and want to know where to meet. As I am the only one with all the phone numbers, I was playing operator. They found each other and then me. While waiting on my luggage, we tried to figure out where there was a Tallika.
Shortly after, The Beard and its host found us. Even more shortly after, I hear the voice of god calling my name. They've put my luggage on a later flight. * sigh * A later flight that lands three HOURS later. A later bloody flight that out of all the people on the plane, by bag was the only one to get bumped. A LATER GORRAM FLIGHT WHEN MY BAG AND I CHECKED IN TWO FRELLING HOURS EARLY!!! Grrr.
So we meandered on over to the Rio in this snazzy town car. Our driver ruled. He helped to make fun of Taea's sordid Mormon past and Paris Hilton. It was the best ride ever!
Once we go to the hotel, we waited in the ridiculously long line to check in and chill. While we waited, Radar and Shipwreck finally stopped humping long enough to come greet us. There was much squealing and hugging between Dar and Radar while the rest of us tried to act like we didn't know them.
Front of the line! Woo!! Oh my... is that a short redhead over there? Yes, yes it is! Oh HELL YEAH! Out of nowhere an ear piercing shriek gave everyone heart attacks while I crossed the space between me and Niami in about three steps. I love Niami.
Naturally I was a little embarrassed (okay, not really) so headed back to Taea and the check in. Yeah. We had no room just yet. Everyone else had a room! What the hell?? Oh well.
So, Taea stuck her bag with the bell desk, and I would have but for the fact that mine wasn't there!!! The guys all took their bags up to their rooms and we all went in search of food and to learn the layout of the zone and get all the discovery experience for hitting the points of interest. We got a little lost once, but we got the loc and
moved on. We managed to find where the sign in and conference area for Fan Faire was set up and hung out there for a while. We didn't want to wait at the front camping the registration spawn, so we hung out laughing at the people who were. An hour later, we looked up to see the line stretching all the way out of the convention area to the casino and thought that perhaps we should have camped... Oh well.
So Taea and I trekked back to the registration desk to check on our room. Gods my butt is gonna look GREAT after all that walking around. We got upstairs and Taea unpacked... I would have, but I still had no bag. My bag finally showed up, yay!! I changed my clothes and we all made it off to the Voodoo lounge. Hot, sweaty, bad music, severely expensive drinks. Yeah... We went back to Coyote and Ship's love nest and sent the troops out for supplies.
We all spent the next several hours drinking and talking and having a great time. Finally met Winter and SG-01. Then the bride and groom to be made an appearance and we watched Coyote eat pixie sticks and chocolate covered espresso beans. I can't believe that someone was silly enough to feed Coyote caffeine and sugar. Don't they know better? It's like gremlins...
At this point I think it was like three am for me and Taea. So we cut out with apologies and ran off to sleep. Shortly after, as I found out the next morning, someone called security on the party. That’s right boys and girls. Coyote's party was too loud and raucous for Las Vegas. Can you believe that???
Stay tuned for day two. Same bat time, same bat channel.
