There is no Death in LotRO, only Defeat, but there are consequences.

Durability

Whenever you adventure, no matter hiw careful you are, your equipment experiences wear and tear. This is expressed in game as a chance to lose a little bit of durability every time an item is used, from weapons and tools to armor. When you are defeated (LotRO does not use the word "die") the damage to your equipment is much stronger. This can be repaired at most merchants but it takes money and is a drain on your resources.

Revive vs. Retreat

When you are defeated you will be given the option to Revive or Retreat. You cannot Revive in an instance.

Revive

Revive will get you back in the game immediately and at the location where you fell, but:
  • It can only be used once per hour. You will see a debuff icon, Revived From Defeat, that prevents you from using Revive again until it expires.
  • Your gear still gets damaged.
  • Dread. When you have Revived you are, quite understandably, a little more cautious, a little more frightened. Once burned, twice shy. This will show in-game as a debuff, such as A Minor Setback, that will add some Dread. This reduces your morale slightly, how well you receive healing, and how much damage you deal. It also increases how much damage you receive slightly. The effects of Dread are cumulative.
  • If the mobs do not move away from you, they will kill you again the moment you Revive while you wait for your Morale and Power to return.

Retreat

If you choose to Retreat you will zone out, then back in at the nearest Rally Circle. These are found throughout the world on lonely wind-swept hilltops and out of the way places. These Circles will be relatively safe, as no monster paths will cause them to roam there directly.

  • Your gear takes damage to it's Durability, of course

Keystone
Keystone
If you happen to have a Healer with your party, or one happens along and is feeling magnanimous, you can be resurrected even if you have Revived within the hour, but:
  • Your gear is still damaged. Get resurrected too often and you may end up naked when all your gear breaks.
  • You will have a medium-duration debuff, Resurrection Sickness, that reduces some of your stats

The Keystone shown at right is from a circle in Moria, but all the Rally Circles have one and they all have the runic inscription. The writing is in Angerthan runes, the writing of the Dwarves. The runes are 18, 48, 46, and 44. This should translate as KAEW, which makes no sense unless one of the artists at Turbine was slipping in a signature.
