ZAM at E3: Details on Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic has become a yearly ritual at E3 – stop by BioWare’s booth, drool over the latest CGI trailer, and get endlessly teased by the morsels of gameplay on display. For those keeping score, it’s been nearly three years since the game was announced. The news recently broke that its release date was pushed back to late 2011. Thankfully, BioWare has doled out a continual stream of new information to keep us happy and docile, like the recently revealed Advanced Classes page.

At E3 this week, Bioware focused on three main game features: raid content, the Galactic Cold War, and an epic quest on Alderaan. Keep reading after the jump for details from our visit to the booth.

ZAM Explores Aion 2.5 at NCsoft Event

Last week, Staff Writer Paul "LockeColeMA" Cleveland had the chance to attend NCSoft's Aion 2.5 event in San Francisco. The team briefly discussed the history of Aion up to this point before diving into a hands-on experience with the new content that's coming in the Empyrean Calling update on May 25. Read on to find out more!

Touring with Turbine: DDO's 'Crafty' New Update 9

More consistent than any other MMO team in the industry, the people over at Dungeons & Dragons Online have been hard at work to get Update 9 out the door and, as usual, I met up in-game with DDO's Executive Producer and Producer, Fernando Paiz and Eric Boyer, to check out what's to come on April 27.

ZAM Rolls Into Battle in World of Tanks

The typical fantasy roleplaying online games can get tiring after a while. Many World of Warcraft players complain that PvP comes down to “feature of the month” specifications and classes, and other classes don't have a chance. Gear becomes an insurmountable barrier between the veteran players and the newbies – tactics get thrown aside for brute strength and damage.

But the field of online gaming is wide and varied, as proven by World of Tanks. We've been keeping our eye on this free-to-play game for quite some time through interviews, previews and a BFF Report, as well as all of the news that comes out of wargaming.net. To coincide with its official launch in North America and Europe on April 12, I decided to dive into this non-fantasy MMO that recently set a Guinness World Record for “Most Players Online Simultaneously on One MMO server.”

ZAM Explores the Forsaken World!

“No!” I begged my editor, “Not another free-to-play game! I've done Pirates of the Burning Sea, Champions Online and I just tried out Mythos... and now you want me to do another?”

Now, I'm not biased... OK, maybe I am a little bit. Like many gamers I know, I tend to believe that you get what you pay for with free-to-play games, and I paid nothing. But my editor passed along an amusing anecdote that softened the mental blow: apparently after years of playing World of Warcraft and other subscription MMOs, a longtime friend of his had quit and been trying out multiple free-to-play games. "What were they?" I asked, thinking perhaps Lord of the Rings Online or Champions Online. Turns out one of them is a new game from Perfect World Entertainment that was “made with Western audiences in mind.” Named Forsaken World, it was the subject of my next article. Read on for my thoughts after the jump!

ZAM Fights Through Mythos' Closed Beta

Back in 2008, Mythos was put on hiatus indefinitely after Flagship Studios shut its doors and the team went on to develop Torchlight. Well, indefinitely has come and gone; the European version of Mythos is currently in closed beta testing under Frogster and HanbitSoft, and will enter open beta on April 12 before officially launching on April 28.

In case you haven't heard of Mythos before, picture a Diablo-esque random dungeon game set in an MMO universe. Players can travel into instanced dungeons to explore, complete quest objectives, down bosses and gather loot, then travel back to common areas holding NPCs and players to craft, sell off treasure or pick up quests. I had a chance to dive into the closed beta, so read on for my impressions!

Wandering in Wakfu: Ankama's Ambitious MMO Sequel

In an industry that's filled to the brim with generic MMORPG buzz words like "casual friendly," "next-generation graphics," and "action-packed combat," Ankama Studios' incredibly successful turn-based 2D MMORPG, Dofus, has always stood out as a rare MMO that walks its own path. Now, six years after Dofus barrelled out of France and took the world by surprise, Ankama Studios and North American publisher Square Enix are getting ready to, once again, venture off the beaten path with their highly anticipated MMO sequel, Wakfu.

With Wakfu's open beta just around the corner (April 27 internationally, which doesn't include North America), I decided to grab my closed beta key to venture back into Ankama's beautiful world.

Bigfoot Networks Branches Out to Wireless Adapters

If you're a PC gamer who enjoys the mobility of a laptop, then you might want to keep an eye on Bigfoot Networks. This company has been developing products to help reduce network latency in desktop PCs for years, but it branched out to notebooks this month with the launch of its new series of Killer Wireless-N adapters.

“Gaming has changed over the years. So has Bigfoot,” said John Drewry, vice president of marketing. “Notebooks now have a demand for gaming. This whole performance segment of notebooks has blossomed and continues to be a growing segment of the market.”

ZAM's Look at What to Expect in LOTRO's Update 2

Today marks the launch of Update 2: Echoes of the Dead for Lord of the Rings Online, and we were fortunate enough to meet with members of the Turbine team at PAX East and follow it up with an exclusive in-game tour to check out all the new features. This update brings a lot of new content to the game, including:

Read on for an in-depth look at what we saw at PAX East and during our tour, as well as what to expect with this new update.

ZAM's Hands-On Look at Lineage II's Tech Demo

Lineage II Producer Marissa McWaters plays the Goddess of Destruction tech demo.

During our time at PAX East, we had the opportunity to check out the North American debut of the playable tech demo for Lineage II's upcoming Goddess of Destruction update. Marissa McWaters, who was just promoted to producer for the game, explained that the demo was created as a tool to collect feedback from fans as we logged in and battled waves of enemies.

“This is a tech demo, so what you're going to see here isn't necessarily going to be part of the Goddess of Destruction update,” McWaters said. “It's just basically to show off the direction we're going with the graphics and the art. Also, some of the skills use combo skills, which we don't have in Lineage II right now. The demo uses several of the skills that are spread out through lots of classes to explain the direction that we're going in the update.”
