Progression Servers Merging

Progression Servers will be merging on March 21. From EQLive:

Progression Server Merge Information

On March 21, 2007, we will be merging the EverQuest Progression Servers. Characters will be moved from The Sleeper server to The Combine server and The Combine server will retain its name. The Sleeper server will then be closed. In addition, we will be doing a character wipe on these servers for all characters that are below level 10 that have not been logged in within 90 days of the merge date will be deleted.

Check back on the EQPlayers Website on Monday, March 12, 2007 for updated information about the merge. We will provide the answers to other questions as needed before the merge.

Questions and Answers about the Merge:

Q: What will be the name of the server after the merge?
A: Characters will be moved from the Sleeper to the Combine server and the Combine server will retain its name.

Q: What will determine who gets to keep their character names?
A: Characters that have the longest played time will keep the character name. Characters that require a name change will have an x placed at the end of their name.

Q: What will determine which guild gets to keep its name?
A: Guilds with the oldest creation date on these servers will be able keep the guild name on the newly merged server. Guilds that require a guild name change will have an x placed at the end of the name.

Q: If my character name has to be changed how do I change it?
A: Check back on the EQPlayers Website on Monday, March 12, 2007 for information about getting your character renamed.

Q: If my guild name has to be changed how do I change it?
A: If a gets an x placed at the end of the guild name due to the merge, only the Guild Leader should /petition to get a new name for the guild. Be sure to provide a list of new guild names that you would prefer in case you are not available when the petition is being addressed. Please do not reserve the guild name with other characters.

Q: Does time in trader mode count toward time played for purposes of deciding who will have the X next to their name?
A: Yes being in trader mode counts towards played time.

Q: How do I make sure I keep my character User Interface and other character settings?
A: If your character switched servers, you can simply, rename the related ini files for your characters in the EverQuest directory. There are two files you will need to change; these files exist whether you have a customized User Interface or not:

  • Character_server.ini - This file stores friends and ignore lists, hotbuttons, ability and combat buttons that have been set.
  • UI_character_server.ini – This file stores the placement of your windows
Example: If your character name is Bobbie on the Sleeper server you would check the EverQuest folder for Bobbie_sleeper.ini and UI_Bobbie_sleeper.ini and change the name to Bobbie_combine.ini and UI_Bobbie_combine.ini.

Q: What will happen to my corpse?
A: It would be best to loot your corpse where available however, corpses will be processed with the merge. If a character gets an x placed on its name, the corpse will also get an x. Be sure to loot your corpse before getting the name changed.

Q: What happens with my information on EQPlayers?
A: All characters that have been moved from The Sleeper server to The Combine server will need to select Update EQPlayers under Characters in the EQ menu in game.

Visit the Progression Server Discussion forum on the Official EverQuest Forums for further discussion about the merge.

"These two servers were a bad idea from the beginning really"

I completely disagree with this statement. I played basically 4 toons on 2 accounts on the sleeper server. Enchanter and Wizard to 51, and 2 clerics, one per account, to levels 44 and 46 or 47. I stopped playing on the sleeper server long ago.

However:

I learned a lot about the history of Everquest, and why a lot of things are the way they are. I grouped a lot in South Ro, some place I had never fought in before. I experienced a watered down version of the EC Tunnels, and learned what "I am at second torch" means. I played dark elves for all of these toons so I learned the geography and a bit of the lore of Neriak and the three tiered town that is the home of the dark elves.

The highlight of the progression server was my time in OT. To me, THIS is what made EQ a great game. Log in, do /ooc 35 chanter lfg, get group, enjoy the game. Lots of people 24/7.

What could be better!

This has substantially altered the way I view EQ. It is why I now put my EQ time into GE, which is as close to this wonderful experience as exists in current EQ. On my server, in GE there is almost always 10+ people, even during off peak hours, and during peak hours it is usually over 20. Not as good as OT was on the progression server during its hey day, but still VERY VERY good. And because of the time I spent playing the progression server, I fully appreciate the current GE experience.

I just hope that when the developers remove GE as a hot zone, when presumably GE will go back to being a deserted ghost town, I just hope that the new hot zone to replace GE will be as popular and successful as GE is now. My fear is that the hot zone change will be EQ's last gasp, that the replacement for GE will not attract a regular gathering of people, and that the last breath of life will be squeezed out of the game. But even if that happens, it won't erase the fun I am having in GE now. And if won't erase the fun I had on the progression servers last year.

I am very thankful for the time I got to spend on the progression servers. I learned a lot about the early game I missed, I learned a lot about what I enjoy the most about EQ, and I had a blast. Well up until we got to level 51, at which time my wife and I returned to our original servers. But thats ok too it did not erase the good times we had.
Are you in needof a warm and loving home after the merger???

If this doesn't get the empty zones jumping (even PC is barren almost ALL the time on The Sleeper) then I don't know what could help. The only thing I could see keeping interest the way Progression did at first is an EQ Classic server (I know thousands of people have mentioned it, but I'll mention it again). One that stays Classic. I know everyone loves Kunark zones, but we can't waffle.
lol!

just one more example of how EQ is dieing off :(, i hate it cause i don't want to have to go play another game and start from scratch all over again specially after 7+ years invested into EQ. I don't play on the pregression servers i have a character on the combine but only like lvl 5 or so but are they at about the same stage of progression?
lol!

EQ is always very slowly shrinking, but this is an example of what happens to a pair of servers designed around a fad. Most people started playing EQ around the Luclin days and prolly wanted to see what it was like before then. So many players left to go back to their normal servers once the progression ones hit PoP, they've already been there, so why bother reliving that old content again?

These two servers were a bad idea from the beginning really. It wasn't original EQ in the graphical, questing, UI, or many other senses.

I advise emptying your shared bank slots. These items are not assigned to a character and so the items are at greater risk of vanishing.
