New Expansion Announced: The Buried Sea

SOE has announced their latest expansion: The Buried Sea, which will become available only by digital download Tuesday, February 13.

The Buried Sea makes waves as the thirteenth expansion for the successful

SAN DIEGO, CA – January 12, 2007 – Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a global leader in the online games industry, today announced EverQuest® The Buried Sea™, a new expansion for the Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), EverQuest. EverQuest The Buried Sea will only be available via digital download beginning February 13th, for the suggested retail price of U.S. $29.99.

“As the new producer on EverQuest I am very excited to have this tremendous opportunity to work on such a storied franchise, as well as be part of a development team that has delivered successful expansions time and time again over the past eight years for our many loyal EQ players,” said Clint Worley, Producer, Sony Online Entertainment. “As the thirteenth expansion for EverQuest, The Buried Sea will continue to challenge players with two new worlds to explore, ship-to-ship combat on the open seas against swash-buckling pirates, and a variety of new missions created especially for this expansion.”

“The success of EverQuest is both a tribute to our devoted player base and our very committed development team,” said Christopher E. Sturr, Senior Global Brand Manager, Sony Online Entertainment. “EverQuest continues to deliver innovation, new features and challenging new content, which will be evident in The Buried Sea.”

The Buried Sea will also feature the ability for guilds to create a unique Guild Banner from a large selection of symbols and colors. The banner becomes the mark of the guild and when enough guild members are in the same zone, the guild leaders or officers can plant the banner in the ground. Once the banner is placed, members of that guild are able to teleport directly to that banner. In addition to the banners, players will have the ability to acquire Energeian items, utilizing ancient Combine technology; they can gain access to a new inventory slot that can be fitted with an Energeian power source and armor that can tap into the energy held within.

About EverQuest The Buried Sea
Throngs of undead trample the earth both night and day as Norrath's sun withers. With each passing hour, the growing numbers of creatures of the night rising from crypts and graves seem part of a grand design to overwhelm the lands. Trouble also lurks deep beneath the Buried Sea off the coast of Odus in a city named Katta Castrum, which has remained undiscovered for millennia. It is a city built to sustain the beloved leader of the Combine Empire who was poisoned. Generations of Combine Loyalists have tried to cure and awaken him while they house threatened populations of Kedge, Shissar, and Sphinx. But in recent times, the artifact that powers and protects their city has weakened. Without it, the city will be crushed under the pressure of the sea. Only the most intrepid Norrathians have the power to save them.

EverQuest The Buried Sea Features
• Ship-to-Ship Combat – Cross the plank and fight for your life on the open seas as you raid pirate vessels!
• Two Paths of Advancement – Battle pirates on the open seas or dive deep beneath the sea to Katta Castrum, lost stronghold of the Combine Empire.
• New Missions – Take your group through more than 60 challenging new missions ranging from defending merchant vessels against marauding pirates to uncovering the secrets behind the combine city and the danger that threatens it!
• Guild Banners – Design a guild emblem and display it with pride! Upgrade your banner to grant your guild special abilities and plant it on the field of battle so your fellow guild members can teleport directly to it!
• Fellowships – Get together with a group of your closest friends and start your own fellowship! You can join in a common chat channel, gain the ability to create a campfire that can help you in your adventures, and get a token that will let you quickly travel to your other fellowship members.
• Energeian Items – Utilizing ancient Combine technology, gain access to a new inventory slot that can be fitted with an Energeian power source and armor that can tap into the energy held within! The armor gains power based on the type of energy in the power source, so you can quickly customize the effects of your armor by changing the power source!

The EverQuest base game is required for this expansion. For more information on EverQuest The Buried Sea please visit: http://www.everquest.com. Preorders begin on January 16th at www.everquest.com

EQ and pie
# Feb 08 2007 at 5:30 AM Rating: Decent
I think updates and upgrades are good. It gives a lot of people more options. Granted at higher levels, but we all MIGHT get there some day. However, I also agree that it would be better to make the existing game run smoother with less bugs, than upgrade existing areas. Also, making things too easy i.e. PoP and now "rewards" etc, just alienates the people that originally loved this game, because it was a challenge, and encouraged their friends to play.
As like most games now, it's all about instant gratification....similar to real life, unfortunately.
If anyone knows of a new game in the offing similar to the EQ of 7 - 8 years ago can they please let me know.

Why play Draughts(checkers for my US cousins) when you can play chess?

I would also like to say, that like Fjalarr, I also like pie )

Things like this make me miss the old game...

I would probably come back to the game if there was a pre-PoP server. Call me old school, but I miss the game when it was hard. from post-luclin on i've liked the game less and less. I think they should bring back the old Guk server (anyone remember that? I think it closed sometime after velious) just for pre-PoP or pre-luclin. whos with me? =D
Good ideas...

2. If we're going to have an in-game tutorial (Gloomingdeep), then eliminate the newbie areas from the starting cities, and up the levels of the mobs there into the teens.

3. Introduce a character race (again). I like the new aviaks. These creatures are practically screaming to be made into a player-character race. Thy seem to have much potential. Their starting city could be (where else!) in South Karnana. Before you sneer too hard at the idea, remember the frogloks (which I like as well).

Not sure the elimination of PoK idea would work at this stage of the game but I do agree that it was an idea that for all it's intentions, did cause all the things you mentioned (epmtied starting cities, ports worthless).

That said I like your last 2 ideas alot. With the creation of Gloomingdeep NO ONE fights in their home city newbie zone anymore, so upping the level of the mobs and maybe giving a small exp boost for fighting there would reinvigorate these underused zones.

The new Aviak char race also makes sense. You could give them the innate ability to lev maybe or make it an aa for them, and making their starting city the roost in SK would really get people going back to the Karanas again. While they're revamping SK to accomodate this they could redo Splitpaw again as well, having the Gnolls retake the zone from the Elementals similar to what happened to the Trolls in Grobb. Hell, you could even make the Gnolls a playable race as well and make their starting city inside Paw creating an instant rivalry between the 2 races/cities.

First of all "Kacman," (your name is offensive to me btw) I consider myself to be a liberal, and second, I love my country. Third, Bush's popularity ratings are at 34% in the U.S., and barely 5% worldwide, so it looks like your're outnumbered. Fourth, if this no-millionaire-left-behind, warmongering, oil-addicted president wasn't such an F-up, maybe people wouldn't bash him so much in the first place. If you like what Bush is doing so much, go to Iraq and take your Rush Limbaugh-loving politics with you.

Now with that out of the way, I'd like to say that hargrin really brought back a lot of memories with his post:

Quote:
- The original game was nothing short of brutality. They plopped you down in a city with a dagger, food and water, and some note to give to someone you wont find without outside help for about 3 levels. NO maps, NO find button, if you died you better know how to get back to your body. There was no bazaar, (EC players sold stuff OOCing across the zone, if you had more than 300p for a 5ac 2dex bp, that and if you could sneak by the griffons and HGs to even get to the tunnel, O btw the tunnel had a train that came through about every 15 mins).

You did not have corpse summon, and most people under level 40 had heard rumors of a spell that could give you back some xp when you died, but those were just rumors. fight 15 mins, DIE, corpse run the next 2 hours, often eating 2 or 3 deaths in the process. Servers were packed to the point of almost unplayable, every mob that gave xp was camped, (including most city guards) and if you wanted a good camp, you found out who was running the waiting list for that group and put your name on the list, (top camps normally ran 3 to 6 hour waiting list just to get in, and dont afk, because if they sent you a tell and didnt respond in 8 seconds, they erased your name and got next person on the list).

There was no such thing as a group buff, everyone had to be buffed single, and mana regen so slow only those that really needed them even asked for them, O and spellbook opened and took up entire screen when you had to med. Traveling meant running, ports where not simple book clicks and took valuable copper, you needed every copper you could scrape together. Players had 6 hks, not 6 banks, 6 keys total, use them wisely. The list goes on and on, no chat channels, no instance zones, no raid function, etc, etc...

Verrants motto back then was "You're in our world now", and they meant it. The orginal design was for hard core gamers, those people that bought other games, started on hard setting, and blew through them in a weekend. The game was ruthless and unfogiving, "casual players" simply didnt exsist, you either were hard core or gave up after 2 hours. I wonder, how long would some of these complainers last in the good ole days?

I remember those days quite fondly. I never claim to have all the answers either, or even a few of them, but here is my 2 cents for the day regardless:

1. The PoK is a well-intentioned idea that has caused more harm than good. It has utterly emptied out the starting cities, made wizard ports nearly worthless, and created a player base that knows little about how to traverse their own game world without magical aid. The "podium" portals are also cheesy-looking and their placement in the various zones is, for lack of a better word, silly. Solution:

a. Put all spells for classes that are native to their respective cities in the appropriate city vendors (i.e make PoK spell vendors redundant).

b. move PoK quest npc's to the shadowhaven library area. Some npc's could be moved to their respective cities' libraries, or perhaps their starting city outdoor areas (determined by npc race).

c. Expand the size of "the Nexus," and introduce combine-style portals to the zone, including the arena, blightfire moors, natimbi, and muramite proving grounds (the priest of discord gets fired from his job of omens porting).

d. Eliminate the PoK.

e. The plane of tranquility would be the gateway to the planes, and it would be via a portal in the nexus, only usable by those who had completed a min-level of 46 quest.

So we would have two "hubs" for zone access - the nexus, for "mortal" worlds, and the Plane of Tranquility, for "Planes" access.

All I can think of for now!

I wonder if anyone from SOE ever comes by and reads any of the posts here. What they would see, if they did, is the overwhelming majority of people that have no intention of buying the new expansion and/or no interest in any of it's features. They would see several good ideas on how to maintain and *gasp* even expand on the current community. In a nutshell, here are some of the ideas, gleaned from these message boards as well as others, that make sense for revitalizing the EQ world. (in no particular order)

1. Advertise the game in print or television media. Let people know it's still alive.

2. Offer the games on disk again as well as digital download. This also let's people see that their ARE still other games out there besides WoW when they're shopping their local Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.

3. Slow down the expansion rate to one every 9 - 12 months instead of every 6 months. Quality control becomes a serious issue when you rush a largely untested product to market that fast.

4. Fix existing bugs, broken quests, etc. No one buys a new car and settles for the fact that the tires are flat, it has no seats, and the transmission doesn't work. We as the consumers shouldn't have to accept a broken game either.

5. Continue to revamp old zones, improving drops, drop rates, quests, quest rewards in the revamped zones. This does NOT mean turn every old zone into a high end guild raid only zone. Zones like Splitpaw needed a freshening up, not an extreme make over.

6. Add content for the casual player. Something the level 11 - 50ish player can do for decent exp be it quests, mobs, whatever.

7. Add content for the solo or small group players. see above. The community is dwindling. Give the people you have left something to do that doesn't require being in the largest of guilds.

8. Another server merge is probably in order if you aren't going to take aggressive steps to build upon your customer base so that there's more than 2 people in any given zone to group with.

9. Add 2 extra character slots so that people can try out other race/class combinations instead of having to open a new account to do so because (new flash) they won't.

10. Do NOT increase the monthly subscription rate again until you address all the issues raised above and probably not even then.

Anybody have any others to add?

ERRR WRONG. This is not something to publicly request, I understand them ruining new zones they put out, but DO NOT go back and ruin the old zones we have now and already grown to love and adore. You have ruined EC,Ro's,Freeport, please just leave it at that.

I think pretty much the same as alot of the old school eq players when i say we need to slow down on the new expansions and maybe intergrate the old content a little more they are wasted space. How about upgrading them so zones like west karanas and qeynos hills aren't ghost towns anymore they have been doing well with places like Freeport but just changing the graphics isn't a fix

Place more missions and instanced zones in them like DoDH upgrade some of the older items and quests the games changed but these areas are not used because the rewards for them are useless. I mean how many new players even know where or what runnyeye even is, yes they "revamped" it awhile back but it and many others need more help not new expansions that try to bury these unique and memorable areas.

On a positive note i really like how they have been changing the zones and having decent drops when they make them into hotzones.

Just because you CHOOSE (yes CHOOSE) to run 3 accounts (see: NOT REQUIRED) does not mean sony is obligated to listen to you whining and complaining more than the whining and complaining of others, you could just easily be paying $160 assuming you buy the expansions, it is your choice to pay $480 and run 3 accounts, sony never forced you into it.

I gotta say, Id personally have prefered if they waited about a month with this expansion. Seriously - the end game raid events in TSS are still bugged, at the very least they should all be running as intended before launching a new expansion.

That aside, I kinda like the aspect of this expansion. Ship to ship combat could be good fun, especially if they utilize "breakable objects" - which off cause I have no idea if they do, because as so many have already mentioned, you don't really get much info in this press release.

Guild banner - nice idea, really like it. It'll be a time saver, and Im fairly sure most mages wont miss having to CotH entire raidforces...

I just hope it'll be properly tested before launch, cuz as much as I love new content - I hate spending day after day being held up, not by the difficulty of a given event, but some bug ******** things up.

Im guessing there won't be any new aa's, or at least not a new aa tab as its not mentioned... which may be a good thing, would be nice to see a wee bit more effort put into them instead of just the constant upgrades to the already existing aa's.

Fellowship sounds sorta cool, looking forward to actually seeing how it works

Jumping the sharks
# Jan 23 2007 at 11:17 AM Rating: Decent
Man did you read my mind. I was gonna use that reference LOL. And as for saving EQ, sorry but that time has come and gone. SOE is only producing expansion after expansion to keep their raiding guilds subscribed. New players won't come to an aged game like EQ. And they know that. They are in the business to make money and at one time, they may have cared what all these posts of suggestion may have contained, but now they want to keep around 100k worth of raiding subscribers happy. I feel they believe that putting a month worth of work into an expansion for 100k of subcribers is worth the trade off. And you know they are only puttin in that much work now.

Am I wrong??? Well take this into consideraton. They no longer offer on-the-shelf software!! Ok, so how do they advertise? As a new player, come along the sony site randomly by chance?? Yea right. The price of in store software and magazine advertising would over run the little bit of profit they are getting from subcriptions.

I had faith in SOE, around the time PoP came out, but all their games have slowly dissapeared into the guk of their greedy business practices. EQ, SWG, Matrix online (come on? matrix online, wtf?) and yes even EQ2 have got to $h@t. And now..........they have to taint the lives of Sigil games, by forcing them to join SOE, (by subliminal message I'm guessing). Isn't that way the original developers of EQ left Sony? And now they get suckered back in, probably hostle takeover or some crap.

Back to the point...hehe, If your a heavy, and I mean heavy raiding guild, then your life, what life you have, is all gravy then. If your a casual or new player, move on to other online games that are still in the early stages of life. Yes they will probably get up to that point of SOE's mentallity, but you may have a couple years before that happens.

Well, its all about money. Digital downloads is pure profit for them. No box, no docs, no CD's... to create and pay for. Additionally they do not have to worry about returns, stock issues and making commitments to supplying the game on X date to retailers. Its a win/win for them. With the release of 2 expansions a year, how hard would it be for sony devs to make a small expansion that for once says thank you to the little people that help keep this game alive too... a small expansion with a few zones for the casual or solo people. I'd even go so far as to pay extra for an expansion like that.
Hell, I'd even pay extra for an expansion that actually fixes all the bugs of the old world zones...*thinks back to the days when the boats in anitonica actually worked and one could actually finish the broken quests...*

My husband and I are casual players and do not belong to any guild or have any real uber items - we haven't even been to 90% of the newer zones and we've been playing EQ for 7.5 years. Why should we spend money on zones we will never see b/c of our play style (and no, we've no intention of ever changing our style just to make others happy...*looks to the EQ Devs dissaprovingly*).

Fighting on boats on the sea. Hmm. must be an instanced zone of the Dulaks Harbor Windscorn and Oceancrasher tied together. Sounds boring with just two decks to fight on, no where to run to the zone or anything. No mob kiting area, No safe area for AFK. What do you do to leave? Just drop the mission and get warped ashore? That sounds not only weird, but unpractible. I seriously dont see large gatherings of ppl LFG waiting around the quest camp to get into a "LDON" mission aboard a boat.

I always like the statements how people say things like "Well if you don't want it just don't buy it." However for a person wanting to play the game its not always that easy. Look right now at people who refuse to buy TSS. How many times have you been LFG and finally get a invite only to find its in the new expansion? Basically in short if you don't have all of the expansions the other players will leave you behind. I am sure many of your higher end guilds probably actually require you to own all expansions as well for various reasons. Rather you buy a expansion or not your eq world is going to change. It seems like every time a expansion comes out SOE nerfs a older expansion zone's exp trying to force people to buy the new one. I have heard several people talk about how WOS exp has decreased over the past few months for instance.

Imagine if a person bought just Everquest classic right now and tried to lvl from 1 to 50. They probably couldn't do it unless they was super twinked or a solo class because they would find very few groups. People don't hunt crushbone anymore, they don't hunt dervs in north ro (or north ro period) There is no groups in Blackburrow or Befallen anymore. It is even rare to find a group in zones like Highkeep which was always popular before. Really the same is true for anybody who doesn't buy every expansion that comes out.

Every time a new expansion comes out Everquest declines. Gear has allready gotten out of hand in its power and Im sure this expansion will offer upgrades to TSS gear. Also the normal mobs in the game have gotten out of hand in power as well. Because SOE wants to keep up with the gear with 400+ hitpoints they have mobs doing insane stuff that pretty much screws that person with the bazar bought gear.

I am amazed in how, with just of few paragraphs of description, this new expansion can be:

No good for causal players
No good for high end raiders
No good for anything so why buy it

If you want to play the game buy it and enjoy it. If it displeases you that much take your money elsewhere and spare the rest of us your complaints.
