Appraisers Coming with Aht Urhgan

Some people in Vana'diel make their living as appraisers, helping merchants and mercenaries determine the type of items they have picked up during their travels in Aht Urhgan. The Near East's powerful ocean winds, rust, or even mere age can make an item unrecognizable to the amateur eye. The finder may even simply lack the knowledge to make an accurate judgment and find himself unsure of how to use the newly discovered good. In such cases, appraisers use their experience and keen senses to ascertain what the item really is. Qiqirn can use their keen noses to sniff out information about an item, and many make excellent appraisers. The only drawback to using a Qiqirn appraiser is that they might be a little difficult to understand due to their odd accents... Does the idea of finding a mysterious item on your adventures sound exciting? For example, let’s say you find a “??? sword.” It may look just like an ordinary sword, but it could turn out to be an incredibly powerful relic. On the other hand, what looks to be a keen blade to the untrained eye may end up disappointing its finder. So what is the sword’s true identity? Could it be a legendary item? There is only one way to find out--by visiting an appraiser in town. The development team has decided to implement this feature in order to add an increased element of anticipation to adventuring in Aht Urhgan. The mysterious items do not stop at swords. There are “??? gloves,” “??? rings,” and many other varieties. However, you will be unable to equip these items after finding them. That is where the appraisers come in. By getting your mysterious items appraised, you will learn their true identities, and they will henceforth become usable. This service will require a payment in gil, but will not be very expensive. If you get an item appraised while in a party, the appraised item will be added to the treasure pool. This is so that the treasure can be distributed among party members, even it is an Ex item. If you are playing solo, the appraised item will be added directly to your inventory. If you do not have enough inventory space, you may be unable to receive the appraised item, so be sure to clear out your bag beforehand. So if you find an unknown item while adventuring in a party, you can travel to town and have the item appraised together before disbanding. Perhaps the item you have been holding will turn out to be a fantastic find, and then you can all celebrate together! Appraisers and mysterious items will be available with the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc!

this reminds me of the original Star Ocean, not diablo or ultima online... Maybe Enix partners are putting a finger on the game too :D

I get this odd feeling like it's going to be either lowbie armor, or it's going to be related to a certain zone, though. (Sea and things of that such.)

Wow FFXI is starting to look alot more like Diablo more and more each days first a npc (mercenary) to tag along with you. Now we have UII (un-identifyed items) at least we don't have to carry around scrolls of identify.

Of course, you know, cause... Diablo is the FIRST and ONLY game ever to have NPCs in your party and items which you needed to find out what they were before you could use them.

From the description of the new equipment on the ToAU page, it looks like they're also adding gear with set bonuses, I think it said there was a melee and mage set. I wonder if the names of those items will be written in green...

Hmm, this is something i always thought FFXI was missing, "Random" magic items dropped off mobs.

I mean, what fun is it to actually have to BUY all of your equipment instead of actually finding it on adventures like most other games.

The only problem i can see is FFXI making LOTS of new equipment or just randomizing it, because im doubting it would happen, but mebbe a ??? Armor turning into SH wouldnt be so bad ;P
Interesting....

Little bit of Diablo 2 throwback. Here's hoping there's actually decent Gear involved.

thats the reason prices are that high... is because theres so much gil in circulation, you take gil out of the system and prices drop

For you really old school people. I remember back in the early 80's a game called "Bard's Tale" used this method also. Please correct me if I am wrong, which I'm sure will happen if I am.

Great idea! As an above poster said it will take more money out of the economy, but this seems like something actually useful. Mog Lockers available only in one area doesn't seem so great.
Random?

I wonder if the identity of the item is predetermined when it is still in its ??? form or if it is randomly decided as it is being appraised. Either way, I like the idea of this. Just thinking about possibly having a really unique find in your possession, while not really knowing, seems exciting.

Well it seems they came up with this to indeed take out some undesired gil ( >> gillseller's gil ), and it might be fun to use this concept from earliers mmorpg's so i think it's a good move on behalf of SE. ^^ Nice Job

btw: shame on you who buy gil t(-_-)t =P

# Apr 11 2006 at 6:29 AM Rating: Decent
the way it says it will work is that an unidentified item will drop i.e. ??? Sword. If you are in a party and you get such item it will drop to someone. Now if you get it appraised while still in the party, it is once again added to the treasure pool. Hopefully that clears things up

The "Tales" games are some of my favorite RPGs, I believe their system for Appraisal is similar to Diablo's system.

I really like this idea for taking gil out of the economy as well as adding new interesting equipment to the game.

The fact that some of it will be exclusive just adds to the usefullness of this, and may be SE's reaction to the general player base's hatred of CoP's heavy party dependancy. Letting small groups do Assault but making drops unknown and possibly unusable to the current party members should add a decent balance for those that like larger party based quests vs those that like smaller quicker quests.

there is NOTHING unique about this... this feature was originally in ultima online... magic items you found were "unidentified", you had to have them id'd to see what you got using a scroll magic spell or other means of identifying, so pls do not describe this as a "unique" way of finding out... its a very old method from the original mmorpg's that pioneered the way for these new mmorpgs. Ultima online paved the way for games like everquest and finalfantasy and alot of its aspects find its way into newer games ( although alot of the newer mmorpgs restrict your freedom compared to ultima...., no pvp is a good example...).

I don't know which (or if all) of the the Dungeons and Dragons games included an Identify spell, but Genso Suikoden was released 2 years before Ultima Online and there was appraisers in that also.

Of course it isn't unique. It's hard to find something that is nowadays, and then afterwards the idea will be copied, and it wont stay unique for long.

I'm also not saying that Suikoden was the first game to include appraisers (or a similar idea) but Ultima Online certainly wasn't the first. Know what you're talking about before you ramble on.

Edit: Mt - "Identify game" to "Identify spell"

It means we don't have to spend hours trying to work out what something does. I like the research thing and the unknown quality of the game, but it can get a bit annoying. Worse when you buy something. Why would you buy something that didn't do what you thought it did?
