13,000 Players Affected by KatrinaSep 2nd, 2005 at 2:47 PM by Railus

SOE estimates over 13,000 players were affected by Hurricane Katrina this past weekend - people who, this time just over a week ago, were happily playing online alongside us. SOE's statement from EQLive: ==================================================== Hurricane Katrina has left an incredible wake of destruction across the south. Sony Online Entertainment would like to ask you to take a moment to make a donation to the American Red Cross in order to help alleviate some of the suffering. In EverQuest II we have added the /donate command, type in /donate to be taken to the American Red Cross's Hurricane 2005 relief page. For those members of SOE Communities in other games, you can contribute using this link, American Red Cross. The American Red Cross will process your donation and make sure that it is put to maximum use to help those whose lives have been affected by the hurricane. Additionally, for our 13,000+ players actually in the affected areas, we will be suspending billing until such time as they are able to play again. In addition, any items or structures in any of our games, which decay over time, will be preserved until the user's next login. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity. The SOE Family

I am lucky personally, as I am from New Orleans but live on the Westbank of the river (Marrero, LA) I am back at home and have power, as the inside here is intact, but just came back from my brother's apartment... totally gutted by the storm.

Thank you for caring about the people you service with this game SOE. It's great to see so many people who care.

Although, I do find it beyond the call of duty what SOE is doing, I find it a little hard to believe that there is over 13,000 people that play EQ affected by the hurricane.

Plain numbers alone show that the population of Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida along the coast at most is roughly only about 5% of the country'spopulation. That would mean that there is over 260,000 subscribers in the US alone.

Before the flames begin, I am not downplaying what they are doing, just questioning the numbers that is being thrown out there

This chart from www.mmogchart.com shows the active subscriptions by game and you can see that world wide EQ still has nearly 1/2 a million. So over 260,000 in the US is certainly believable.

Data was updated June 2005. They should be coming out with new data soon, same link should get you there when they do.

Considering, as of the year 2000, New Orleans alone had near 1/2 a million residents, i believe that 13,000 (2%) of that number is readily availiable across the coast. The US alone is creeping up on 300 million people total (making 13,000 subscribers a horibbly small percentage), many of which have or are playing EQ in the last 6 years. Why is it hard to belive this game has hundreds of thousands of people in the US? There are plenty of geeks to go around :p

I think it is awesome how SOE, with their estimate of how many affected players being 13,000 (13,000 x $10 = $1.3 million), to do this. Although I have no family affected by this I think they should have allowed a way for the members of those families who were affected to opt in on this. That way they can take care of their family if they need to without worry of losing their toons or paid playing time. Just my 2 cents. Either way I think its admirable of them to do this.

We all new the Big Easy was going to be wiped off the earth someday by a catastrophic huricane eventually. Wished it wasn't in my lifetime though. I have family there, and haven't heard from them since the 'cane went through.

I can only pray for my cousin and her family.

It seems like SOE does care about the lives of people outside of the game. For all those people that had emergencies, family deaths, etc., SOE gives a damn.

I just have to say one thing, SOE Thank you! It just goes to show you that in the wake of a disaster that we all come together and try to help each other the best we can. I was really happy to see this message when i logged on today, and if any one reads this please donate, every bit helps.
