World of Warcraft: Flying in Draenor
Blizzard's Ion Hazzikostas talks about the Warcraft team's plans for the future of flight.
The topic of flight (or lack thereof) has been a hot issue latelyin the World of Warcraft community. In the latest Dev Watercooler blog post, Lead Designer Ion Hazzikostas has laid out what players can expect in the future of flight.
Ian touches on the fact that the team wanted the discovery of Draenor's lands to be experienced from the ground, but also acknowledges that players desire the enjoyment that comes from taking to the skies. Trying to find common ground, soon on the PTR players can expect a new achievement called Draenor Pathfinder. In Patch 6.2, this achievement will permit the ability of flight on any of one's 90+ characters to whoever has unlocked it with at least one character. Expect to put in a bit of legwork to earn this, as it not only requires the exploration of Draenor's zones, but also the collection of 100 treasures, the increase of Tanaan Jungle reputations, and completion of two other Draenor-related achievements.
"We believe this strikes the right balance between ensuring ground-based content lives up to its full potential, while providing players who’ve already fully experienced Draenor’s outdoor world extra freedom to “break the rules.” This also provides a general blueprint going forward for content to come. Players will explore new and undiscovered lands from the ground, and then once they’ve fully mastered those environments—a notion that continues to evolve with each new expansion—they can take to the skies and experience the world from a new vantage point."
