Garrisons to Come to World of Warcraft

Player Housing will be introduced with Warlords of Draenor.

Blizzard surprised World of Warcraft players this BlizzCon with an announcement that Garrisons would be coming to the game in Warlords of Draenor. Player housing is something WoW players have been asking for, for almost as long as we've been begging for improvements to the inventory system, and I am pleased to announce that this is also something Blizzard came through with.

These two features alone make for a very promising expansion, without the added premise of returning through the Dark Portal to Draenor, the continent known as Outland after the Burning Legion laid waste to it, but Garissons has to be the most interesting new feature to date.

Garrisons will be built and can be upgraded three times by players in pre-determined areas of each of the seven new zones in Draenor. These areas will be phased but friends can be invited inside so long as they are in a group. Followers may be recruited and sent out on missions to gather resources for building your garrison and can even provide your character with ‘powerful loot.’

Followers gain experience with each mission and get to progress from level 90-100. These NPCs also come in different rarities, such as common, rare and epic, which then dictates how many ‘traits’ they have. Traits determine specific skills those followers have; for example, mining. A follower with the mining trait can be sent out to mine for you, and this in turn provides you with temporary access to professions your character may not have.

While the promise to implement such a feature as Garrisons sounds wonderful, it feels very ambitious. I truly hope it doesn’t go the way of the Dance Studio and aerial combat. Watch this space!

I'll believe it when I see it. Generally, from years of past experience, Blizzard promises a lot of things at BlizzCon to ramp up hype, but then in the process of actually developing the expansion "doesn't get to it".

Remember Path of the Titans?

Dance Studio?

If they had to take a keyring away to give us void storage I highly doubt they'll make the server space for custom houses.

Looking forward to this. My own little Death Knight run garrison. My slaves will be busy Smiley: grin

I also like the fact that there are specific buffs provided by certain buildings, and you have limited access to professions you don't have. And the offline progression is also going to prove valuable aswell. I had a think about this and I honestly couldn't think of a bad thing to say about it. It's undoubtedly a sailing into unchartered waters for WoW, and god knows the waters have been choppy for a while now. Games change, and in this case it's for the better. It needed a bit of fresh air put into it, and they've gone about it in the right way imo. I'm one of the many who are excited by the whole thing, and am more than ready to embrace it.

So take my money now Blizz!

Glad you're digging these features! From what you've seen so far on this expansion are expecting something much better than Mists of Pandaria? People seemed let down with Pandaria to be honest.

I stopped playing before 5.1. Cataclysm was a bomb. Mists had some cool ideas, but nothing that I found worth $15 a month. It was a hard choice, but when I can play Guild Wars 2 without a monthly fee, and it has just about everything WoW has, I can't justify the expense.

I really don't like how they continue to make the leveling process obsolete. Even if I want to experience the leveling, the dungeons are so laughably easy that you can two man many of them. If you decide to lock your XP to try and experience an expansion, they've removed so much of it that it's impossible to experience it (like you can't earn justice points for BC gear and Wrath is difficult unless you have a full part of 80s.)

Not that the whole game is about leveling, but if I'm going to spend the time and effort to play the game I want to be able to actually be challenged for that time. As I've said several times, if I want to do tedious repetitive work for months on end, I can already do that, it's called a job, and I get paid for it.

I didn't mind Pandaria to be honest the further it went along. The dailies I found very taxing though and it got to the point where I thought "I should be getting paid for this" because it felt like a chore. But when flex came in, along with Timeless Isle it made things a bit better again. But, I found Cata weaker. So for me it's WoTLK>MoP>Cata (never got to experience TBC in full due to when I started playing). So MoP was a mixed bag for me. And I disliked the Pandarens. They were too cutesy and friendly. Not what you want if you're a blood DK lol.

But all in all, I think this will be the expansion that will stop the sub losses, and reinforce it's position (notice the word WILL-putting self in firing line) as the kings of MMORPG's for the forseeable future.

I agree. I think that they will have a temporary gain in subscribers followed by a slower loss than we are seeing right now. After that point you never know! Although we have to remember even with subscriber losses the game is so much more massive than anything out there.

I have to admit i do like the sound of this, lets just hope that it works as intended. If it does work out ok do you think we might see Guild Halls or something at some point?

Sounds like a natural progression. Possibly even Garrison wars? :D

One could hope! I remember Guild Halls in the original Guild Wars. Such a fun idea/place to gather.
