The Scrying Pool: Cantha
Will we ever see Cantha in Guild Wars 2? Yes, just not anytime soon.
With the Canthan continent there is room to establish cultural diversity. With an entire continent there would be more than just a handful of NPCs to be representative of an entire faction. In the Scrying Pool: Deep Sea Horrors, I briefly mention how huge an island Cantha is. A map of Tyria shows that what player's saw of Cantha in GW1 is close in size to the playable area in GW2, and the map shows that players only saw about a third of the island continent in GW1. The place is huge in comparison to the current playable area in GW2, and GW2 supports five different races with different factions within each.
The other reference to Cantha from developers was a comment saying that there were no plans to go to Cantha, but that plans only existed for the first couple of years after launch. Two years is not a long time for something as big as Cantha that would come as part of an expansion. In the first two years of GW2 we will probably see only one expansion, or whatever replacement to expansions ArenaNet is planning for GW2. As many developers from ArenaNet have similarly commented, why would we go half way across the world to Cantha when there are all of these dangers right next door, including at least three more Elder Dragons?
So no mainland Cantha in the near future. That doesn't mean that we won't see any Canthan influence. As mentioned, it wasn't until Zhaitan rose from the depths with Orr that contact with Cantha was lost. There are no references that the Deep Sea Dragon is or will have any effect on reaching and communicating with Cantha.
With the release of Southsun and its lack of any Risen, it was revealed that the settlement of the island happened post defeat of Zhaitan and that was over eight months ago. It is possible that we could see Canthan influences coming into Tyria. The Zephyr Sanctum was a ship coming in to port at the Bazaar that was the focus of this last Living World content. On a similar theme, a ship sailing into Cantha for the first time in 150 years would be a huge thing. It would also set up communication and traveling paths for future access to the mainland. While unlikely, it would be cool for an embassy for the Empire of the Dragon (the largest nation on Cantha) to be built in Divinity's Reach.
It will be a long time before we see Cantha, but it could be any day that Cantha sees Tyria again for the first time.
Matt "Mattsta" Adams is on the hunt for a Legendary. The current goal is to make Bolt. I have my Gift of Mastery done and almost finished collecting Mystic Clovers!
I am not a fan of this most recent patch. It is not that the patch or the content is bad, just that everything feels a little off. Aspect Arena feels a little sluggish compared to the amazing movement skills we were introduced to in the previous patch. The Candidate Trials scale in an odd way, with higher difficulties not really feeling harder outside of the mobs having a lot more health. Southsun Survival is nice, but Mistwalker skills make me want to flip a table when I'm still alive.
As always, if you have a question for me or a topic you would like to see talked about here, comment below or tweet it to @MattstaNinja.
