EVE (Back) Online
EVE servers temporarily halted over the weekend by DDOS attack.
From 02:05 UTC June 2nd, CCP noticed a significant DDOS (Distributed denial-of-service) attack on their servers. They immediately deployed a crack-team of specialists to look at the problem. From 03:07 UTC, they decided that the best course of action was to take the servers offline completely while they attempted to resolve the issue. They momentarily brought the servers back up that afternoon (14:51), but took them down again shortly afterwards, after learning more information.
Reactions on the forums about the unexpected downtime have been mostly positive and supportive. "No need to apologize. I'm really really sorry that you suffered this horrible attack" says Claire Raynor. "Thanks for your overnight efforts CCP!" adds user 3rr0rc0d3.
The hardworking team at CCP are already on top of the issue and the EVE Online and Dust 514 servers are back up as of 10:13 UTC today. "What we can now confirm is that a person was able to utilize a vulnerability in one of our back-end services that support the operation of the Tranqulity server [that houses the EVE Online, Dust 514 and web servers]. This vulnerability has now been secured and thoroughly tested" explains chief operating officer Jón Hörðdal Jónasson. "We would like to stress that at no time was customer data compromised or accessible in any way" he assures players.
Luckily the problem didn't last for too long and has been fixed, so space ship fans can already get back into the game. Here's to hoping that something as unfortunate as this doesn't happen again, lest the wrath of terrible article names be unleashed on the world once more...
