Hands on: Rain of Fear

ZAM adventures through a preview of EverQuest's 19th expansion.

Off we journeyed – ok, teleported; it’s good to have a GM handy – to Evantil, the Vile Oak. This monstrously large and twisted tree has been corrupted by the fear shards which makes it a place of growing evil.

Dominating both the skyline and the surrounding area, Evantil has been bearing the fruit of Cazic’s doom – not currently on the McDonalds value menu – which has been eaten by the local populace, turning them into poisoned versions of their formerly peaceful selves.

These poor creatures stand in the way of all adventurers seeking the corrupted heart of the tree, which holds a massive fear shard entwined in its inner roots.

In stark contrast to the murky innards of Evantil is the zone of the Breeding Grounds. Any fan of EverQuest will know the importance of dragons and this area just thrills with memories of such places as Temple of Veeshan and the Sleeper’s Tomb.

We attracted some unfriendly attention in the form of some local drakes, guarding the eggs being tainted by the fear shards. It was an opportunity to see the new aggro meters, showing threat as a percentage of that held by the person currently being smacked around/set on fire.

The UI is very easy to understand and a smart way to answer calls from the community for this sort of aid to understanding how to handle aggro, something tanks will be overjoyed about.

Although we focused on the fiery portion of the Breeding Grounds, it’s not all just molten lava and brimstone. There are a variety of areas reflecting the kinds of dragons present.

Wen is there going to be a list of Progression through the Rain of Fear going to be put up on Zam. It sure was helpful with all other expansions.
Is it just the pictures?

Looking at the pictures here and at massively it looks to me like these zones are just plain ugly, especially compared to the last couple expansions. Is it the pictures? I got a beta invite just dont have the time to see for myself.

It's not really supposed to be pretty and clean cities like VoA was. The theme of RoF is the corruption of the land by the fear shards. If something is corrupted, chances are it's not going to look pretty and clean. (:
