A Buyer's Guide to League of Legends: Renekton!
Upon his release, Renekton seemed like he would be a powerful front-line warrior like his brother, Nasus. Does Renekton meet those high family standards? Find out!
For the past few champion releases, Riot Games has been fairly good with producing characters that I've been genuinely interested in. Out of the most recent half-dozen new champs, I've picked three new 'mains' in the form of Lux (for support), LeBlanc (for caster damage), and Caitlyn (for attack damage). In addition to this, I've actually enjoyed the other new champions, like Irelia or Trundle, even if they weren't quite suited to my play style. Of course, all good things must come to an end, and such is the case with Riot's latest animal champion, the crocodile-headed Renekton, The Butcher of the Sands.
Renekton is, from a lore perspective, the warrior brother to the terrifying Nasus, Curator of the Sands. Corrupted by his constant dealings with evil men, Renekton 'went rogue' and attacked his brother, only to be saved when, at that moment, the League of Legends summoned Nasus and Renekton was dragged along for the ride. Sadly, while you would think that the Great Library's Gatekeeper would be a significant force in the League of Legends, Renekton really lacks the potential of his brother when it comes to higher level play.
Renekton possesses a new and unique mechanic called "Fury," which essentially mimics the concept of warrior fury in World of Warcraft. Renekton's passive is called Reign of Anger and, with every physical attack he does, he gains 5 fury. If Renekton performs an ability with 50 or more fury, that ability costs 50 fury and becomes empowered. For his pure damage ability, Renekton has Cull the Meek, which is an AoE ability that deals moderate damage to everyone around him, while also stealing back HP. Having 50 fury when using Cull the Meek just makes it heal more and makes it more powerful.
Renekton's two utility / damage abilities are Ruthless Predator and Slice and Dice. Ruthless Predator is very reminiscent of Irelia's Equilibrium Strike, as Renekton hits his opponents, dealing damage and briefly stunning them for 0.75s. If Renekton possesses more than 50 fury, this ability gains more damage and stuns for 1.5s. Slice and Dice is also quite similar to Irelia's Bladesurge, in that Renekton dashes forward, dealing minor damage to everyone in his way. The only difference is that Renekton can Slice and Dice again shortly thereafter, allowing him to excel in hit and run tactics. Finally, Renekton's ultimate ability, Dominus, transforms Renekton into a giant crocodile, where he gains bonus health, bonus damage and gains more fury over time.
