Another Look at Item Augmentations

Sony sent us over another preview of the coming ability to augment and modify existing items. The base item in this case is the Ghastly Helm of Sacrifice: As you can see from the picture it has 2 augmentation slots, type 1 and type 3. The first augmentation, the Glowing Carbocernaite Crystal is type 1, +25 HP and +20 Mana. All/All. What's interesting about this augmentation is after I posted last week that I doubted that old items would recieve augmentations; all items on test started showing "Slot Type 1: empty" in their descriptions, so presumably one could add that enhancement to Sal'Varae's Robe of Darkness for example taking it to 125hp/120mana, or presumably any other item you're attached to and would rather augment than replace. Of course this is speculation, since the changes to items on test may or may not end up live. The second augmentation has the effect Flowing Thought II on it, is rather limited in terms of the slots it can effect, and only fits in slot 3. At this time, no existing items on test have a slot 3. The combined result is the Ghastly Helm of Sacrifice (augmented), hp 60, mana 55, and Flowing Thought II, a fairly good item depending on how the three items required for it are found. *shudders at the DB work I need to do to support Augmentations* --Illia

Do haste aug stack with haste item?
# Sep 11 2003 at 1:06 PM Rating: Default
I got a question...let's say i have silver chitin hand wraps..and they have like 22 or 23% haste..22 i think, and I have a haste aug with let's say 5% hast on it. If i aug the schw's with the haste aug..does it become a 22% + 5% haste item, for 27% haste..or is the 5% haste just overwritten, and it stays a 22% haste item. I've wondered, but no one has had and answer yet, and i'd hate to waste a haste aug for no good reason. Plus there's a regen aug..and if it could stat with a fungi tunic :)...well u get the point. LdoN is so much fun, and the possibilities r endless with armor, tho most of the time I feel like I'm playing a 3D Diablo 2.
Augmentation Rareity / Epic Augmentation
# Sep 04 2003 at 9:02 PM Rating: Decent
2 questions pop into my head when i think of the augmentation's.
A) Just how rare will they be? i mean when LoY was released the hype was all about charms and they are rare as all get out, hopefully the drop rate wont be so rare on them.
B) Will epics be able to have augmentation's added to them? It would be great to be able to add some FT to caster epics, as well as boost the stats on them, and id love to lower the dmg/dly ratio on my Ragebringer even if its by 2 cause 17 dmg 23 delay would be really nice for those of us who arent members of high end or uber guilds.
if the answer to the above is semi common and yes there will be alot pleased people.

Well all this arguments over lvl restrictions and such is pointless. SOE has created an expansion that should never be purchased if your character is a solo toon. Such as necro or druid, Im a necro and never get into groups so LDoN is a huge ultimate waste of money for me, sure its cool and some new ideas but as a necro that rarely finds groups you wont ever get any drops and again pointless. SOE props to you for trying, but you should consider all playing styles when creating an expansion. You do know there solo artist. why would you create an expasnion that holds know viability for a solo artist to purchase it. And again penalize a solo artist
Huh

That is not true. I am on the beta server as well and create toons of varing levels on a constant basis. While there are alot of lvl 65's on the server, in the past week, I have sent requests in channel for groups of different levels. Without going into specifics, (NDS) I will say that it will offer adventures for varing lvls. Last night for example, I was in a lvl 65 group and later I was in a lvl 25 group. Each had the chance to drop items equivelant to the level range. The lvl 25 group infact did drop a weapon that most lvl 45 beastlords would love to have. (my main is a beastlord and wish I had that item at lvl 45).

Kind of funny how soe is copying blizzard on the "instanced" dungeons idea pretty sad how they jump on the idea of it as soon as they could to beat blizzard to the punch. Even though blizzard thought of the idea close to a year ago to use in their new online game World of Warcraft and have been testing it ever since. Even though World of Warcraft will be a much better game than eq when it comes out. Sorry since this is kind of off topic but I had to vent this out since eq keeps bringing the "instanced" idea up so much like they invented it but they are just copying another company and not giving the recognition where it is due. Flame on.

But, I do like to point out that LDoN is not the first instance zones to be put into EQ. Plane of Time (just b?) is instanced as well.

Anarchy Online did this from day 1 for groups and solo, and if you haven't heard of this game then you must not know about too many games other than the few you're looking to play in the future. BTW, every game is better than Everquest BEFORE it comes out. Afterwards is another story..... Star Wars Galaxies I think is a big disappointment to most players expectations. Give it a year though.

The item WILL become NO DROP as the augmentation is NO DROP. Augmentations can not be removed once placed in, but can be "upgraded" (replacing the old Aug. with a new one) but the old Augmentation is then lost to you. At least at this time. Who knows if that will change in the future, but to answer the question you implied...

The original item you could have traded before will forever more be NO DROP, unless in the future there are Augs that are not NO DROP and you use that to upgrade the item popping out the NO DROP aug.

At this time Augmentations are exclusive to LDoN and NO DROP so the only way to get them is to purchase LDoN and aquire your own augmentation through and adventure.

Since the Augs are NO DROP, you can't use them to twink (because any item you put an Aug in becomes NO DROP). Any character that gets an Aug will get one made for their power level.
RE: ug

Due to this affecting no drops only, and you have to either loot or obtain favor points by finnishing things for NPC's. I see this as no more a threat to twinking newbs as camping a lowby near a mob, and killing with yer main, then looting the no drop. There might even be augmentable items with lvl restrictions on them. It's possible that a level limit on entering a zone will be implimented hindering a high lvl grp to take along alts to twink. I'm sure SOE has thought of all of this and dealt with it accordingly

i play on FV. Whole different world. there is nearly no NODROP. charms sell like everything. usually in the 1-5k range. charm of brotherhood medals sell for 50pp each, since they are so common, so a charm of brotherhood (nodrop) costs 200pp and share wolf form is easy too.

thats not the worst. essence of human is my personal JAKKKKS item. it used to need A LOT of real RP effort to get liked in queynos for my troll. now all he needs is a potion for 150pp and 2 hours of handing in vendor bought stuff. this game went down the drains, when it started to target the new customers (the casual ones and the PL (you can BUY a PL service to bring your char to level 50 in 7 days. Recomended Levels and such...
# Aug 23 2003 at 7:01 PM Rating: Excellent
For those who are complaining about the recommended levels, these are probably the higher level augmentations...

And you must must remember, that, looking at those augmentations...let's take the FT2 Aug for example...it says:

HEAD ARMS HANDS FEET

from that, realise you can have *4* of these...that's right...without enough hard work...anyone who's not even in an uber guild...can build a set of items that add up to FT8...along with Solstice Earring (that [pretty much everyone who uses mana wears), you'll get FT9

without one raid on a huge mob...possible doing just single group dungeons (albeit a LOT, since this is a high level augmentation and will most likely cost a lot of points when this goes live...as I'm in beta, I can't go into that any further...but it's not a one day thing), and then searching Bazaar for the items to make yourself an earring....you get FT8

Sure, you have to be wearing items with Slot 3 in those slots...but it's still *possible*...and so they have to restrict it...

moving along to the 25HP 20mana...again, seems kinda small for recommended level 65, doesn't it?

except, it's slot 1, which from the items we've seen is probably going to be the most common slot (as, it's the first in a series of types, most would have to come from it, and then 2 and forward would be more and more specialized...or something)...it fits in all 18 (2 ears, 2 fingers) slots...if you were all about HP and Mana, you could get 18x 25/20...which would be 450HP and 360Mana...that's like 4 and a half 100hp items...which are up there with "uber" items...was the most HP you could get on a Velious item, I think...

Like I said, these are just the higher versions...they aren't going to make this expansion another "get to 65 fast, because that's when the rewards start rolling in", this expansion is going to be great...I actually started another toon of my same class (ppl in my guild are making fun of me and calling me crazy) juts to have him ready for LDoN...getting from 20 to 65, although you can do it the same way everyone's been doing it all along...with LDoN, you can do a more enjoyable way...rewards with every adventure, no twinking required (no, really!), and with Dungeon Crawling...which is 10x better than sitting in the same spot, while 2 ppl (tank and healer) do most of the work...

Some ppl have said this will be the best expansion yet...Some of those ppl are right...
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 25 2003 at 12:43 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Wrong, because identical levels of FT items do NOT stack. Having a FT2 and FT1 item is equal to FT3, but a FT2 and a FT2 is just equal to FT2, the other is redundant and does nothing.
RE: Recomended Levels and such...
# Aug 25 2003 at 1:22 PM Rating: Decent
Wrong, they do stack. You could have mutliple FT itmes at the same level (i.e. four items with FT2) and you WILL get the combined benefit. Don't listen to this guy.

This is from the original poster, he is talking about adding 4 FT 2 items and your earring for a total of FT 9. Obviously they stack, and the original poster knew this and added them up. Why not listen to this guy, his post is much more enjoyable to read then yours.

There are items you can buy called 'Solvents', one for each augmentation slot. Yes, you lose the augmentation item that use previously used, but the item is then able to take a new augmentation item in that same slot.

augmentations can be removed. there will be a container provided in the game where you place the base item and the augmentation item in together to combine them. you also do the same to dismantle them by just placing the combined item into the container.

As they dont promote powerplaying ( at least not on official terms ) I can understand the level restrictions.
As ALL items received slots it would be possible for a level one to wear high end items. If you check items like Flowing Thought Foci you will quickly come to the conclusion that they all have a REQUIREMENT of 50+ .

So to reduce the "twinkapability" the add recoms . Good way, IMHO.

P.S.: I didn't need "stats+100" items to get my levels and I strongly believe it is easy enough now to advance quickly in EQ.

I would hate for the augs to be only obtainable in the higher level dungeons by very high level players. I wish they would focus more on providing challenges and experiences for all levels rather than just the higher ones, so that people would enjoy playing a mid level character rather than trying to level them up as quickly as possible. I dont know if that makes sense to any one else, i mean i barely get it, but thats what i think.

Ok, LDoN is a expansion focusing on levels of individual groups, So what you are seeing is augmentations for those in dungeons of that appropiate level range.

Don't assume all augmentations are going to be for the higher level characters in the upcoming release, that will never happen. There are lower level augmentations with no recommended or required level.

a FT2 item with a recommended lvl of 65 is justifiable, it more or less came from a lvl 60+ dungeon crawl or raid encounter

Flowing Thought III, I had it at level 55. And that's not a twinkable item.

Flowing Thought I, twinkable, but has a recomended level of 51. I don't see one point of flowing though (essentialy 2 aa points worth of work, if you factor in the cost of mental clarity 1) worth 14 levels.
I'm also not sure if that means you get FT I at level 35 or so with a recomneded level 65 FT II item. You tend to get whatever percent of stats your level is of the recomended level...

Well... one of the things I think they are using for twinking is the fact that all the Augmentations released so far are recommended 65. If it works the way I think they made it, and you take a level 10 twink, with a nice uber-item, Augment that item, all of a sudden the REST of the stats on that item drop down to near nothing because the entire item is now recommended 65.

If they do release lower level augmentations, those will be the ones the twinks have to use... otherwise they get the short end of the stick.

I do think that's poetic justice. I've fought for every item I've gotten... and twinks kinda get my gourd. hehe
