Blizzard adds Battle.net to WoWMar 19th, 2009 at 5:33 PM by Wordaen

Blizzard has just announced that they are adding the Battle.net account option available to all games they offer, to include World of Warcraft, the Blizzard store and as a way to access all your favorite Blizzard titles! You can see the original article here.

We’re pleased to introduce the Battle.net account -- a brand-new way for players to manage their Blizzard Entertainment games, make online Blizzard store purchases, log in to World of Warcraft, and more using just one set of login information.

World of Warcraft players now have the option to create a Battle.net account, merge a World of Warcraft account (or multiple accounts) with it, and begin logging in to the game, the Armory, and the forums using their new Battle.net account login information.

Some of the benefits of the Battle.net account include:

 

  • Fewer passwords to remember. One single login lets you access World of Warcraft, the online Blizzard store, and more -- including upcoming games such as StarCraft II and Diablo III.
  • Opt in to upcoming Blizzard Entertainment beta tests. Put yourself in the running to be invited to test upcoming games.
  • Easy access to your classic games. Store your CD keys for classic Blizzard Entertainment titles, and then download the games whenever you wish.
  • And more to come… We’re planning to add more features in the future, including tools to help friends communicate between games and bring players closer together.

On my server, the spam in the trade channel is quite atrocious. Double and triple-posting is almost the norm now, though I reported them for spamming under the context of "WoW isn't battle.net".

Apparently I was dead wrong. Although, I am still of the opinion that in the vast majority of cases, accounts being stolen is entirely the account holder's fault.

Well... Since just ONE password account on WoW can be hacked... just what kind of safeguards is Blizzard taking with having ALL of your games hacked?
The only way Blizzard should allow that is if they beef up their own security on the login/server side: IDENTIFY THE IP ADDRESS LOCALE.

What does that do? Simple, the majority of the hacked accounts have been from foreign countries usually Korea and China where the mass majority of the gold hackers seem to be gathering information. Logging your account IP and it's location and comparing it when you log in again to be within the SAME area (yes, this would be able to safely check for non-static IP's as they are still in the same range). This would allow you to play at a friends house without any problems. If you are logging outside of that locale, then chances are it isn't you. The security system should identify this and then ask for your accounts "safe-word" to prove it's you logging quite a distance from home.

One password for ALL of my games in the hands of the minimum security of Battle-hack? I don't think so.

Did you take a poll or something to determine how many chinese/korean gold farmers hacked accounts? Not saying you are wrong, or by any means that I'm right, but that was kind of a shot in the dark just because we know of chinese gold farmers. Thousands of american WoW players probably hack accounts too and steal gold, then there are the Europeans, the Africans, the Canadians, Mexicans, etc there are probably 14 million people playing the game all around the world. Besides last I checked, Chinese most likely don't need to hack to make gold, they earn it faster than we can get to lvl 2.

Oh easy...

"Don't share your info with anyone." What more are they supposed to do outside of telling you to keep your private info private?

The majority of what people claim to be "hacked" accounts are merely stolen accounts because the person is a moron and either stupidly follows a suspicious link from a forum post or an e-mail, or because they're an idiot and they download the latest "cool add-on" from a suspect site and don't bother scanning it for viruses before clicking the exe file. They get a keylogger for their idiocy and lose their account. I have zero sympathy for them.

The majority of lost accounts could be prevented if people would just learn and practice basic computer safety and common sense... and I have to say, if people don't want to do that then I have no sympathy for them when they lose everything, nor do I think Bliz should take any special steps to protect them from their own stupidity.


Granted, I'm still not going to go along with this linked account thing, but only because I know Bliz will ***** it up at the beginning. I'll wait until it becomes mandatory and hopefully the bugs will be ironed out by then.

It's funny, but as soon as I saw this topic pop up, this was my very first thought as well!

I wonder, how many WoW players out there all went "uhuh, yeah, like THAT'S going to happen any day soon?" when they saw this tidbit?
