Introducing the Square Enix Security Token

Since late 2008, account security in the world of Vana'diel has become increasingly important to players. A security device similar to Blizzard's WoW Authenticator has come up for discussion several times since the idea was first mentioned at a Premier Site Summit. In December of 2008, Sage Sundi stated in an interview with Allakhazam that they were hoping to have the device available to players in 2009.

His words now ring true.

As a response to the security issues plaguing players, Square Enix has released info regarding the Square Enix Security Token, a hand-held device that players can optionally purchase in order to bolster account safety by using a constantly changing one-time password for logging in.

Discuss this latest announcement on the ZAM forums !

From Playonline.com :

As a result of growing account security concerns within the online gaming community, Square Enix is proud to introduce the Square Enix Security Token. The token greatly increases the security of PlayOnline accounts by allowing users to log on by using a constantly changing one-time password that is displayed on the screen. The Square Enix Security Token will be available for purchase through the PlayOnline Viewer in the near future for those who wish to take advantage of the added security this optional service provides. As a special incentive, each Square Enix Security Token will come with an exciting in-game bonus which may just prove indispensible during your many adventures in Vana'diel!

Information on the Security Token's release date and price, as well as further details regarding the in-game bonus, will be announced at a later date.

I hope this is a USB device, at least it looks like it.
I'm fine with a one-time fee to buy the protection plan, also.

And I am very interested to see what the incentive in game bonus is...

p.s. Anyone else plan on wearing this on thier keychain/bookbag? >:D

it's not usb it's just a lil token that fits on a key ring you press the button it generates a code you use said code to prove that it's you accessing your account and not some one trying to hack your account.

Hmm...I've never been too worried about hacks getting my access. I've never given my password or online account info, and if by chance someone DID hack me, I am so poor and don't have any kind of "End Game" gear, they may just actually GIVE me stuff for feeling sorry for me and my poor poor RDM

You all act like S-E is the only one that requires you to pay for this kind of security token. WoW has one and you have to pay for it. It's cheap and a great way to protect your account if you've put a lot of time into it.

You want the extra security and peace of mind, you have to pay. That's the way of the world.

If it's over $14.95, it's not worth my time.

Sorry, but I really don't care WHAT the ingame item is. If it costs more than a month worth of playtime, and chances are that we'll have another tidal talisman on our hands in terms of cost w/the ingame item, then I'll pass.

I already have a piece of plastic I rarely use - it's called WoTG.

If it's that much you're getting gouged, period. Blizzard's is 6.95 including shipping -- we bought four for the house, and you could link multiple accounts to one token. If Square-Enix charges any more, which they will because they know you're stupid fanbois that will pay for anything with the Final Fantasy name attached, it'll be highway robbery.

And to retards asking what happens if you get hacked with a token? You don't. The only way you're going to get hacked with a token (barring the 1 in a *trillion* chance that someone found out the algorithm you're using AND figured out the keypad sequence for that 30 second window) is if you're stupid enough to leave it lying around, on a bench in the park, with a sign pointing saying "THIS IS TO MY FFXI ACCOUNT!"

And in that case, you deserve to be hacked for being a boil on the *** of humanity.

And the sad part is, there are a thousand f^ing morons in the forums here willing to pay it, and stand up for SE's "right to ream" the hell out of people even when the security problem was addressable by other means.

At this point, I hope SE does charge them $42.99, and limits the key to 1 character so the idiots have to pay more out of pocket. Sure would prove their faith is SE is misplaced to any rational person, but the dumbnuts would probably applaud.

the odds of getting hacked with a one time use security token are almost non existant. they would first have to get the algorithim and YOUR token's serial number. the way a security token works is you link the token to your account each time you log in you hit a button on the token using it's algorithim and the serial number of your token and generates a one time use series of numbers those numbers are the final login AFTER you enter your normal login.

griping about the fact that your account can get hacked is retarded. if you can't secure your computer it's like throwing a hissy at the person who sold you a house because you didn't lock your doors and left the windows wide open.

getting a security token like this is the equiv of putting bars on your windows, retina scanner on a blast door, and having a swat team camped outside your home 24/7. It is no one else's job to keep your computer and account safe except you. if you are stupid enough to go to the sites spamming gil tells and get a key logger and then "hacked" then it's not SE's fault. if you get a keylogger from following /b/'s advice it's not SE's fault. if you cruise around the internet without an antivirus and spyware scanner that is your fault.

if you don't like/understand that then you proably blame something else for everything that goes wrong in your life rather than taking personal responsibility.
stop complaining
# Mar 11 2009 at 10:45 AM Rating: Default
Ok so this got me wondering...

This new "security token" will make it safe to go to these gil selling sights?

Because, if their keylogging software etc. can only give them half of the equation to get into your account...

Then won't this help RMT?

Now people can buy all the gil they want w/o having to worry about getting hacked.

And people won't be afraid of downloading bot programs then either.

__________

Now I've never bought gil, nor do I plan to ever. But, do they get your shipping info from your credit card or w/e somehow? Because if they do, then they will need to physically come to your house and steal your token, to get the other half of the equation.

Would they really have the bawls to do that? I dunno, but if they do... then this new item makes you less safe than before.

Am I missing something here?

Interesting idea, I will need to see how much it costs. Also need to see what SE's guarantee will be if you still get hacked using their security tolken. Above all, still an interesting idea.

1 dollar is to much and they will guarantee you nothing, the idea is disgusting after all the people who have been attacked and lost so much of the game time

why should we pay yet more for the bad programing

Well like others have said... when you buy a house you don't automatically get theft protection. You pay extra to get a alarm system put in your house.

This is like an alarm system for your account, except instead of paying monthly fees you just buy it and use it as much as you want. No, it might not be great, might turn out to be a big waste. Until I have all the information in regards to the product I won't judge it, thats like trying to playing poker with only half a deck of cards. So for now, it's an interesting idea and I will see where SE takes it when they release the full information.

I personally want to know what this in-game item is or whatever you get if you buy it.

Problem is no one else can sell you a security system like this but SE. All the other forms of security mention have competition and I can shop around for a fair price in a free market. SE can charge whatever they want for these.

If your account gets hacked and SE says "too bad because you did not have a security token" you have every right to flip balls. All around it a sad way to profit from vulnerabilities in there own game product.

so you are saying that if someone sells you a house even though it has locks and deadbolts they should throw in a security system aswell. the fact is that if it exists it's been hacked or can be hacked. SE does not even have to offer these to you and can say if your account gets hacked tough crap you're SOL cause you didn't properly secure your comp. these are not needed but are mearly an extra layer of protection be happy that SE is putting these on the market. there is no extra monthly fee and it's a one time drop of $5-10 bucks all things considered it's more than worth it.
these should NOT be free

Honestly all the ppl whining about this should be free should stfu. they don't even have to make these available these are not part of your basic security. you keeping you computer clean and being smart about pw management is. The WoW one costs $5 i have one and love it. saying these should be free is like saying your house should come with ADT for free.

So, since this seems to just be the same little device WoW released, I can say they work quite well. A nice, cheap, mabey $6 device, and not having to worry about keyloggers says it is worth it to me. I hope all MMO's start releasing these things.

didn't they implement this already, i seem to remember something about using a USB flash drive as a security key? maybe that was just a developer idea.

anyhow, i assume this would be a one-time cost, not a monthly recurring fee.
provided SE adds a clause stating if your account is compromised while using their security key, you get all your stuff back with little to no hassle, i'll be getting one. what's 20-30 bucks when you can lose 5 years of virtual progress & someone makes a huge profit from stealing your password? that's what insurance is for! taking steps to ensure you will be taken care of in the unlikely event of an emergency. no one gets in an auto-wreck every day they drive, but you still need insurance to do so. same with fire/flood/wind on a homeowners plan.. its not gonna happen every day & with any luck, it won't, but what if?

What you're thinking of exists already, the idea is to save the folder containing your encryption to a flash drive, so you can remove it at will. You do have access to this file, it's on your hard drive.

This reminds me of those rip off car lots..."oh..you want seatbelts?...thats gonna cost extra....Tires too? That'll cost ya."
I agree that this "protection" should be mandatory and part of our regular monthly fees. However since SE has its collective head up its *** dont expect anything free from them. That being said...if they're going to charge people for this service...what kind of "guarentee" do we get that these accounts are going to be secure? Will they waive the "one time" character/item restoration they have in place? How about a rebate if we get hacked? Not sure how many people will utilize this. I'm guessing it will depend on the price.
btw...how do you spell EXTORTION?

"Late 2008" refers to the sharp increase in account hackings from third party sites.

Honestly, I think it is a good idea for security but having to "pay for protection"... I just don't have the money to pay on top of my monthly fee, what's up with that, lol.

Security is an illusion...

Created out of fear...

Fear not the loss...

Of something you do not truly posess.

Pay you to protect your own property? I don't think so.

Also... I can't wait to hear of peoples "Security Tokens" getting stolen.

Yes. It's called a password.

Better analogy: GM/Ford/Toyota gives you a key for free. If you're concerned that thieves might duplicate your key and steal your car, you can pay a fee to have your locks changed every time you drive your car.

ozzebra wrote:

Purchasing additional optional security is not illegal. ADT would be out of business.

Just long enough to refute it.
