Call of Fate Guild Interview

Welcome to our first guild interview! Each month we will be interviewing two guilds on a selected server, one from Order and the other from Destruction. We will try to interview guilds who've clashed a few times in the game, to see what the sides thinks of each other.

Order continues to fight the deadly ranks of charging Destruction hordes wherever they can. While in a heated battle on the Ostermark server, I had a chance to exchange some Q&A between swings of maces and spell charges with the Order guild, Call of Fate.

Read on to see what they have to say about the Destruction realm plaguing Ostermark!

Berek: CoF has been playing MMORPGs for a long time now. Give us a background to your guild's history and how you came to Warhammer Online.

CoF: The original home of CoF was on the Frostfell server of Asheron's Call (est. 1999), and since its inception it has spread to many other worlds. We currently have branches in Anarchy Online, City of Heroes, Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft and of course Warhammer Online. We applied for guild beta, won a ton of spots, and rocked it hard. We were able to get a nice start once the game launched thanks to our experience in beta.

Berek: Is CoF currently open to new recruits? What would you say to players that wish to better understand what CoF is all about and if it is a guild for them?

CoF: We have a limited recruitment for new members that initially require a vouch from one of our existing members. Each recruit must read and agree to follow our Code of Conduct. There's then an interview process with an officer and a trial period where we determine how the applicant fits into the guild. It's all relatively standard, but required to ensure our guild is strong and maintains a sense of trust amongst its members.

We do not believe you have to be the best at the game to be a good guild, rather we believe that by being a good guild you get to be the best at the game. We're friends first and our loyalty to our friends is what has kept us together through multiple games and 10 years of play. Our forums are active with folks we've gamed with over the years; many of whom don't even play these games anymore. Feel free to visit us at http://www.calloffate.com to see what we are all about.

Berek: Since CoF is a multi-game guild, players likely migrate frequently between games. What have you seen both in your guild and in the community in terms of this movement with WAR?

CoF: Many of our former DAoC members joined us in WAR, but we also welcomed the addition of folks looking for a more diverse RvR expereince than that which was offered in EQ, WoW or AoC. The WoW expansion has drawn the attention of those more interested in PVE, but our guild is certainly large enough to handle such migrations in stride. Ostermark is quite populated, so we have no trouble finding Destruction guilds to battle.

Berek: Ostermark is a busy server, which is excellent for effective and enjoyable RvR gameplay. What is your regular routine when getting together for RvR battles?

CoF: Because we are a large guild there is always something going on- the trick is to find time to do it all. We have players who just want to explore the content and unlock their Tomes. We have people that don't even know there is a world outside of RvR. And we have folks who live in the happy middle. We have scheduled guild and alliance RvR nights for open RvR. We also work with guild outside of our formal alliance to coordinate attacks against the denizens of destruction.

Berek: What are your favorite and least favorite Scenarios?

CoF: We tend to gravitate toward scenarios that promote fierce battles, rather than long standoffs. A match of 24-17 is not something that we find to be terribly exciting. I know our Tier 4 folks would love to see something other than Serpent's Passage.

Berek: Has anyone in your guild tried the new careers yet?

CoF: We have several new knights smashing heads in T1 and T2, and several new healers to keep them alive. The balance for the careers is working out well overall we think.

Berek: What do you like about Ostermark more than the other server choices? What influenced your guild's decision to roll Order on that server?

CoF: We like the population balance, the maturity of the community and general feel of stability. By stability, I mean that we know Ostermark won't be closed anytime soon for population issues but it's not so big that you can't do RvR without it turning into a slideshow.

We wanted to choose between the 2 RP servers that were going to be available at launch. Thus I flipped the now infamous Pennsylvannia State Quarter which determined that the Call of Fate would be established on Ostermark. The quarter resides in a safe place for future plaque mounting (heh, maybe).

Berek: CoF is a large guild, so it must have quite a bit of influence on Ostermark. What other guilds on the Order side do you regularly campaign with, and what Destruction guilds have you battled against along the way?

CoF: We have a great alliance made up of Roisin Dubh, Velox Aequtinas, Fists of the North, Black Lion Brewery, and Prophecy. We've enjoyed working with Reverance and others as well. In RvR grand-strategy we've found a great bunch of blood-thirsty dwarves in Mithril Warhammers and Granite Guard. For Destruction, we always know it is going to be a hard fight when we see SMD or Hfran Warband and we love to see Shadow Company because of their great roleplay and DAoC background.

Berek: A lot of updates have been released in the past few days. What excites CoF the most, and what is being updated you shake your fist at?

CoF: A great update is lair loot being fixed/revised, the new careers of course, and the fantastic new influence features for open rvr. Those especially are going to bring our guild together more and fight even harder, if not just for those personal rewards. Some concerns: changes to HoT's, much higher damage potential of DoK's, and the zone control system still needs a lot of work.

Berek: What are CoF's overall impressions with the way Warhammer Online was designed in terms of Order vs. Destruction, and RvR battles between the two Realms?

CoF: The overall design is certainly something we've been looking for in a game for our PVP/RVR folks. There are things that need tweaking of course but being able to fight meaningful battles against live players rather than NPCs is very satisfying.

Berek: For Destruction aligned guilds on Ostermark, what would you say to them about your guild's status and battle readiness?

CoF: Be ready for the coming storm, because we are what happens when Fate comes Calling.
