68% of Subscribers Return From Other Games

Seeking Alpha has transcribed the second quarter financial earnings call for Activision, which as we all know, now includes Blizzard. I only mention this hum drum "Blizzard is making a lot of money" bit because some interesting numbers came up! CEO and Co- founder of Blizzard, Mike Morheim gave numbers regarding WoW's subscribership and how the game is handling the competition!

To date, 68% of the players who listed Age of Conan as their reason for cancellation and 46% of the players who listed Warhammer as their reason for cancellation have reactivated their subscriptions to World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft also managed to grow its subscribership, despite the Olympics and the summer vacation period. At the end of the quarter, World of Warcraft had 1.5 million more subscribers than during the same time last year. As a result, our non-GAAP net revenue was up 19% and our operating income was up 11% compared to last September.

Lots to talk about, and we are indeed, having a great discussion on the WoW forums ! You can find the thread, started by (and story found by) neocronNV (via Shacknews ), right here !

What I would be curious to know is how it compares against Everquest...

How what compares?
Subscriptions? No comparison - EQ has perhaps a few hundred thousand subscriptions currently, and EQ2 may have less than that.
It's an inexact science, since most MMOs don't publish their subscription numbers.

Even during EQs time at the top of the MMOs it still only had about 550k subscriptions, and has dropped substantially since then.
(I'm one of those that still lingers in EQ - Rathe server, and also plays WoW.)
