Comic-Con Upper Deck WoW Mini's
Our very own Tovin is reporting from Comic Con in awesome San Diego, man I wish I was there, but since you and I are not, we can read all about it below!
Comic-Con came firmly into San Diego with a packed pre-show viewing yesterday for those who pre-paid 4 day registration, industry professionals, and press. I mentioned several times that the craziness on the floor, and the amount of people, were simply overwhelming. I was laughed at and told to wait until today to see anything worth complaining about. I laid in bed a long time this morning, afraid to get out there and see that!
Last night's event turned out to be an excellent look at what's in store over the next 4 days, and am I excited (and a little scared) to see what's in store! The exhibit floor is littered with comic book artists, fantasy artists, authors, MMO and video game developers, trading card products and a ton of other stuff I haven't had a chance to see yet, but hopefully will get to by Sunday!
The first, and really only, stop on last night's circuit was the Upper Deck booth, where Support Team Manager Patrick Swift walked me and a couple of very excited young WoW players through the WoW Minature game , due out this fall.
The release will bring a 3vs3 miniature table top game with Horde, Alliance, and Monster factions duking it out! It's obviously turn based, and the miniatures are non-customizable, but look amazing! There's no painting or waiting to play, and for us newbies to this type of gaming, there's a nice fat, and readable rule book to go along with it! The first release set, coming out in November, won't have any of the iconic characters from WotLK but we'll see plenty of other familiar WoW personalities including Warchief Thrall!
The health and moving timers on the base of the character mini's can be removed so that you can display the mini's on their own. The base movement can be a little trickey, and deft movements are required for not knocking your mini off the base every time you attempt to move them, but after a few times it gets easier.
The training board Patrick had set up for us was one vs one, and each player had 2 characters, and 2 hidden ability cards. These cards are secret to your opponents until you pull one out during an attack, so they make for fairly good anticipation! The cards also allow for the only type of character customization you're going to find, so be prepared to spend some time getting the right attack strategies down! The starter sets are reasonably priced and can get any player into the game instantly. Starter sets will go for $25, and booster sets for only $15.
Scoring takes place on the 5th and 10th round, and goes until someone scores 11. I didn't have a chance to stick around much more, so I didn't see an actual scoring round occur, but I'm determined to make it back there sometime in the next 4 days to find out!
Just like the WoW Trading Card Game, we'll see loot cards inserted into these decks, along with UDE Point cards .
Those familiar with table top games will get right into the rolling for attacks and counters, and those of us not familar (I'm a table top n00b) can get right into it! It really is a simple to learn and awesomely fun game from what I saw.
The folks over at Upper Deck have formed a great team with Blizzard, and if they have any reputation, we all know that it's to bring whatever market they enter to a much higher level! Table top gamers, and those looking to see the fun and social aspects it holds, rejoice! This game will be a fun hobby for anyone to get into!
