As most of you know from reading online etc, FFXI will be released for the Xbox 360, and the version of FFXI that will be used for the Xbox 360 has been graphically revised to make images sharper and allow players to see further in distance I.e. landscaping.

That being said here are a few reasons they may be doing hardware updates in list form.

Ongoing lag issues already present by pc/ps2 users.

To handle the new user BOOM that will more than likely happen upon Xbox360/FFXI release.

Handle NPC/MOB etc placement and correct geometry for those playing on xbox360 that will be able to see further in distance, also I am sure they will update the pc version also.

Now you may ask why 18 HOURS?!?!!?.
Well lets take a look.

Personal home computer reformat/ reload windows to HDD/ DL Drivers for the hardware/ DL updates for OS/ and then utilities I.e. Firewall, harddrive ghosting software, RAID setup etc.

Estimated time for all of that 3 to 5 hrs.

Now that was just the reformat of a home pc, what SE is doing is completely changing the hardware on 10 - 30 servers, backing up complete game worlds, having to setup the servers and make sure all drivers etc are working, set SCSI controllers, configure saftey software/hardware. THEN load our worlds and precious characters to the new servers and hope for a smooth transaction.

On top of all that they then have to test each and every server running the game and test each world for QA functionality.

So yea I think this upgrade is extremelly quick considering what is taking place.

Square-Enix News: Producer Interviews
Posted by: Cuer - Tue Aug 02nd, 2005 02:08 am EDT
Update August 3: Another interview has shown up, at GameInformer. It has some more specifics of the X360 version of FFXI, and how it will work together with the other versions.

At the recent Square-Enix 2005 Party, FFXI Producer Hiromichi Tanaka gave out a number of interviews. Two English language ones are out. First up, a lengthy interview with 1up where a wide range of issues are covered, including the recent NPC Fellows, game balance, and the port of FFXI to the Xbox 360:

1UP: It's been reported that the draw distance on the Xbox 360 will be twice as long as the PC version. Will this give Xbox 360 players an added advantage because they can see enemies from a longer distance, helping 360 owners to camp rare monsters more efficiently?

HT: Actually, the draw distance will mostly affect the overall scenery of the game. The distance between the players and enemies will be the same as the Windows and PS2 version.

1UP: Was putting FFXI on Xbox 360 a way to sustain the game because Sony yanked hard-drive support for the PS2 (Thanks, Sony!)? Nowadays if you want to pick up FFXI and start playing, the PC version is the only option at the moment.

HT: It's not so much the survival of FFXI as is it giving players an option to play the game on next-generation hardware. Of course the added bonus for those players is to play the game in high-definition on widescreen HD televisions.

1UP: Will the 360 version support voice-chat? We sure hope not.

HT: No, it won't. The reason being is that we track player abuse through the chat logs, and if we removed the necessity of the chat log, it would be impossible to take action against abusive players.

Mr. Tanaka was questioned in the 1up interview about the still-unannounced third expansion pack, but would not give further information at this time.

In another short interview at Gamespot, the topics raised included the advance of MMOG on multiple platforms:

GS: What does the future hold for what you do? Can we look forward to another MMO with the Final Fantasy franchise? What platforms do you see yourself focusing on?

HT: For MMOs, the platform isn't that important anymore. The only real requirement is its ability to display the images from the game. As technology advances it should be possible to play one game across different platforms.

GS: Does that complicate things for you as you move forward, as typically developers have had to appeal to one specific audience such as console or PC players?

HT: Since MMOs require a keyboard, that's really the only requirement now. If the platform supports a keyboard it doesn't matter whether it's a console or PC. From this point on it should be possible to make games for either.

I think that it's good that they are doing these updates. If they never changed the software, we wouldn't have all the cool new items and features that are there now. And, if they never updated the hardware, we wouldn't be able to have as many poeple playing as we do. Ok, so it's a day long. I only have one thing to say about that. There is other stuff to do in life, and it isn't healthy to sit in front of a PC or a PS2 all day playing games. Yeah, I check this site occasionally and do post a few things on here, but it's because I'm at work, and I can only do so many things "job-related" before I run out of them, so then I look at this and tell my boss "It helps me keep up-to-date on game info, seriously." If you don't like the fact that even if you pay to play a game, and there's still updates being done on it, then I have 2 simple solutions for you:

1. Learn to deal with the fact that not everything runs "100% smooth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," or at the very least stop griping about it publicly.

B. Stop playing the game in general, and save us all a lot of time listening to complaints.

Yeah, some things about the game make me mad too, but I usually just tell the 3 or 4 guys I work with about it, because I know noone here wantsa to hear my thoughts on something pertinent only to me and my character.

That's just my two cents, take it or leave it.

gil sellers, stopped on boots, pin and peacock charm, i went thu the dunes yesterday and there was 2, yes, 2 ppl camping emp.
NPC friend, can fill a gap in a pt or dou
the rest of COP has been added.

if u didnt have updates, ppl at lv 75 might actually run out of things to do, its like anything, u need to wait for for it to be ready, u gonna eat a pie b4 its been cooked? no.
let them do their work, and appeciate how good of a game it is and if u like it that much, u'll w8, if u dont, dont play and stop complaining.
Its like $4 a week, if that, im in england, so i dont know how much that is but it works out about 70/80p a day and that how much a bottle of pop costs, just pretend u lost ur bottle of pop or something and watch TV instead.

just my 2p O.o

Customer Support/Update Info
# Aug 08 2005 at 2:19 PM Rating: Excellent
I spoke with customer support yesterday and spoke with a supervisor; not to argue but for information on the update. I was told by one of the supervisors that the maintenance is to replace some machines that are causing problems with (important part #1) connection issues as well as (important part #2)the "slow down" of some servers. So I'm pretty sure they are replacing the servers with the lag/DC problems. She also hinted that they might add minor changes to some other things for smoother gameplay (nothing major obviously since i said minor). So hopefully they can get all they need to do done in the 18 hours to make the game run better. It's all hoping and wishing, but it could make a noticable difference.

LOL Nice try on the $2.52 amount because that number is subjectable.

the thing is no matter how much you play you still pay the same amount. So instead of finding an amount that is based on Vonthalasa's equation is that it doesnt fit everyone. Some people work from home and play all day. Some only play a couple hours.

My equation might not be totally accurate for everyone, but its closer than Vonthalasa's, becuase the figure will always be the same in my equation due to having to pay the same amount.

First, the word is "subjective."

Secondly, I was using someone else's point as a plot device - the point wasn't how much money, exactly, that SE gets. The point I was -trying- to illustrate was that, during this ridiculously long maintenance, over a million's people money is still going into the company. And yet, for all the money that SE gets every month from us, they can't hire anyone that can say, "Hey, you know, we should probably run backup servers so there's little to no downtime."

As someone that has been studying and applying IT as it relates to businesses for some time now, I have seen that it is -very- basic to have this train of thought. Do you see it much? Not from small companies with limited incomes. But SE is -definitely- not one of these small corporations. They make at least 13 million dollars, every month, from just us in FFXI. That's not counting their platform game sales, and any other income they might have.

I challenge anyone to truthfully tell me that this kind of income does not give a corporation the capital to run dual servers. It's a very basic business concept - never have downtime, if you can help it. IT-wise, the way to alleviate this? Run parallel servers if possible. While (in a worst-case scenario) a failure by one server would result in a disconnect by the entire region (because each region runs on its own server), the other would pick up immediately and everyone could get back on and resume service. Server upgrades? Disable one side of the parallel and upgrade it, while the other side holds the load. Then fire up the new servers, route all traffic through the new ones, and disable the other side and upgrade.

In short, I say all that money that goes to SE needs to be used CORRECTLY.

So you're on Allakhazam at work. Do I suggest you get up and walk out? Well, seeing as how you're recreating on corporate time, then it seems that the company would be getting the same amount of output from you either way.

Once again, running a successful company involves one of the main points being the reduction of downtime.

That being said, please keep in mind that none of what I said was intended as a personal attack against you, even though parts of it might sound like one. I ask that you keep an open mind and read everything preceding this paragraph as illustrations of point, not flames.

Thank you.

Do you work for a corporation the size of SE? If not then you cant answer how easy it would be to do what you have stated.

There are issues with any of these games that we play. Its not like this was sprung on you, with no warning.

Thats all fine and dandy if you knew what I did at work... but you dont so you have no say on whether I am productive in my day's work. Until you know exactly WHAT I do, I ask that you not comment on if I am an asset to my company. :)

No offence taken whatsoever. I just dont agree with your attitude of "Well SE makes all this money, they shouldnt have problems". Everything has issues.

Lets take Cox Cable (my internet and cable company). If youre familiar with them, they supply cable to most, if not all of, Southern California. Now they might not be on the same scale as SE, but they are doing pretty well. Just the other day, cable and net out for 2-3 hours. Just so happened to be the time my LS was doing triggers, and I wanted to attend, seeing as how I havent had the oppurtunity too. Well missed it. No warning it was going out.

This is just an example of how things have issues. Anyways, great reply to my post. Take care and I hope this has consumed some of that time you are so deserving of, in which you are being deprived of. I bid you farewell. :)

I really liked Vonthalasa's post.
I work full time and go to school, and today is my day off. I'm not blaming SE for plotting against me and doing maintenance on one of the few chances I get to play, but it still sucks.

And I do agree with cowpi, siremOO Sage, and the likes. Some people are overly obsessed with the game, and do indeed need to take some time away from it. But that still doesn't give anyone a reason to be mean about it. There are some people out there that rarely get a chance to play, so I'd just like you all to see it from THAT point of view.

Let's all play nice, children.. And try not to be ignorant and see things only in your personal points of views.

Peace out.

This is my opinion. I work full time and go to school also, but the last 3 updates/maintences have all fallen on my days off so another 18 hr maintence w/o being told anything more than "Updating Server" is a load of BS. As far as the POL Errors go, any network administrator can tell you that you have to plan for the largest ammount of host as possible when coming out with a title as big as this one, as such, SE need to fire their entire IT department and higher better ppl. I don't NEED this game but I live in Indiana......WTF am I gonna do here? Indiana is all corn fields and basketball, bother of which I hate and I can't be out in the sun much cuz of my Lupis so those who are freaking out cuz ppl are mad, TOUGH!

I think they are ACTUALLY getting new servers, that 'should' drastically better the lag in the worst places in the game, maybe it will help the update distribution as well.

I'll take planned downtime anyday, as long as they can fix their odd way of doling out updates, its never fun to plan on getting back in game after maintenance, only to get pol-1160 for an additional day and a half. That's the #1 thing i'd like to see fixed. I dont know if its even possible to change the way of updating, but it just doesnt seem right to me, thanks.

Ah, I love you "Go outside and do something, get off your ***" people. Because, it seems, you all think the same - people complain because FFXI is life.

If people like that would sit back and actually read the posts, you'd see that the others aren't (mostly) complaining about the inability to play. It's usually about SE's lack of customer service, and a ridiculous amount of downtime on our dollar. Using Vonthalasa's post, during this update (applying the knowledge that SE has over a million user accounts registered for FFXI)...

$2.52 US x 1,000,000 = $2,520,000 US

...that they are making off of us during the update. And yes, the whole $2.52 applies, because the whole world plays, not just a small locality.

Coming back to the original point... it's not the lack of FFXI that is the problem. It is the fact that even though SE makes a -huge- amount of money off of us every month, they treat us like walking dollars with computer keyboards.

And Vexxxxx, good point! You guys are ******** that people need to go outside, yet... you're on Allakhazam... just... like... us?

Funny how that works, huh?

Just an opinion from somebody that has a life outside of FFXI, but loves to play a couple hors a day.

1. I think the programers are great, awsome content, the game itself is really something.
2. I do however have issue with the money, or lack of it that it seems they have spent to kept the gaming experience, basicly being able to connect, stay connected, and download updates in a "reasonable" ammount of time.
3. There are still some areas in FFXI that have some issues. One that i have noticed myself is the tunnel between the Cape and Valley of Sorrows. if you get more than 2 parties in there at once, somebody is gonna D/C, and i dont understand why. Also, they take security measures by changing the access ports to connect to the servers, which is nice, keeps hackers out, but ever since the update, every time they have done this, I get kicked off, and then cannot reconnect. Reset modem, a 20 minute ordeal, and I'M back on, 20 minutes of downtime for a party is like a death toll, we all know that.

So, my hope is that this 18 hr maintenace addresses these issues, as well as other hardware stability. And the thing about the DDoS attacks, I talked to my companies IT guys, and they couldnt beleive it. From what they said, DDoS attacks are pretty easy to protect against, and competent I.T. folks, especially those supporting online games, where these things are common, should have safegaurds in place against those things from the begining.

of course, like anything, just opinion. overall, 18 hrs of down time while annoying, isnt like its a waste. Monday Night Football anyone?

Just a lil breakdown for you.

I pay $16.95 per month to play (I have 4 mules and my main)

Now divide that by 31 days...

Comes out to about $.55 per day.(rounded to nearest cent)

now divide that by 24...

Mine came out to $.02 an hour lol

So now multiply .02 by 18

The thing is though, that it doesnt matter how long you play... You still have to pay the same amount...

If my phone company sent me a text saying from this day and time to this day and time we will need to interrupt service to make your life easier, I wouldnt be asking for a refund of my money.

The electricity thing is totally off because you dont pay a flat rate. You pay for what you use.

Another thing, most of these people are playing around this time, thats why they complain. I havent seen anyone complain about not being able to play at that time and want a refund.

Quote:
now not only that ... figure in the time u know is gonna come after an update of this size. After the last huge update it took me 24 hours to update.

24 X .06 = 1.44
18 X .06 = 1.08
---------------
2.52

though see the 24hr time is subjectable. After the last update, I didnt have to wait 24hrs.

Anyways, either equation is still not worth the complaining when you add up all the time the servers were up and running fine and compare that to the maintanances and downtime.

RE: PLEASE STOP WITH THE COMPLAINING!

Hello,

I don't think that is quite what people are talking about. Nor do i think that your math is correct. Do you play 24 hours a day 7 days a week ... no.

This is more like the correct math. Now lets say the average adult person.

30days in a month <average> X 24 hours in a day = 720 hours in a month.

Now average sleep per day is 8 hours .. so 8 X 30 = 240

720
240-
------
480 <--- down to this.

Now .. on average people work 8 hours a day for 5 days a week so that is 40 hours per week X 4 =
120 hours

480
120-
-------
360 <--- down to this now.

now lets take out time to eat, do laundry, spend time with family etc.

lets say that takes 2 hours a day in the week and 5 hours a day on the weekend ... that is 20 per week X 4 = 80

360
80-
-----
280 and this is if u do nothing else but nessacitys every week.

now base that on your 16.95 per month.
that is $.06 per hour. X 18 hours = 1.08 approx.

now not only that ... figure in the time u know is gonna come after an update of this size. After the last huge update it took me 24 hours to update.

24 X .06 = 1.44
18 X .06 = 1.08
---------------
2.52

2.52/16.95= 14% of that months money for the playtime you should get gone! Could u imagine if your cell phone or home phone ... or internet didn't work 14% of the time u wanted to use it. Or if the electric company just turned of your power 14% of the time but still charged you, Etc. now maybe u know where people are coming from. alot of the complaints are coming from people that don't play 24/7.

Now personally i agree with you ... just wanting to play devils advocate and something to do while i wait on update ^^

Seriously, if you want to get technical about it, you're giving 6 hours a day on each weekday. So, at the most, you would be losing 6 hours of play time during maintenence, not 18. Same for the 24 hours you give, only 6 of it would be play time lost. So, in total 12 hours * .06 = .72, which only comes out to a little over 4% of your $16.95

But seriously, we all need to find better things to do than post silly posts like the one I'm posting right now :P

No offence, I think SE IT guys are stupid ^.^
I am not IT guy, but I was thinking....
How many servers are there ?
10 20 30 ?
Why can't they have a parallel backup server ?
That is update the backup, after they have tested enough, change all routes to backup and update the current server.
How much SE has earned ?
Can't they spend money on another 10 20 30 servers ?
Not complain, but personally, really think that SE staffs are really stupid without such solution and keep stoping customers who are paying monthly fees... spending time waiting ??

Update or Upgrade?

I heard that this was server maintence and they were actually replacing the servers. If that's the case then isn't one of the reasons they would want to do this is to lower lag and increase the stability of of the updating? I don't know, I only heard the it was a server upgrade. Just my two-cents.
In regards to updates

I don't think people care so much about the update as they do the time following the update. POL is not going to address the issue of distribution. After 5 years in IT I have never seen such a slow, constantly interrupted, poor distribution scheme.

If they cared about the quality of the game of they would address the issues that frustrate their customers. The worst part about their distribution is that you can't rely on the servers to stay active while you continue to do other things. In a way it's like camping a NM (0/4 w/TH2 Leaping Lizzy), where the drop isn't guaranteed but you still have to devote the time. You might have to devote time to sitting behind your computer just to see the udpate finish. I will start it, go have a few beers, come back and restart it, because like the NM's, the update finishing while I'm gone is definately not a guarantee.

I love what has been done for the gameplay, but I just hope you never have to reinstall your OS during a large update. I'm just glad I can try to improve my chances of connecting to a server that isn't dropping people over and over. If you are on PC, make sure you know the command prompt and "ipconfig /flushdns" command(thanks Google).
hmmm

Now, I understand the fact it is hard to maintain a server properly and all, but we pay for a gaming service that is not working all the time when we want it too. Stupid as it may sound, shouldn't we at least get a discount for the inconvienence (likely spelled wrong)? It would seem only fair, as we pay for this and are not able to play.
Long Maintenance

Man what a long maintenance. How dissappointing. I know its for the best for all us FFXI users but it seems a little drastic. And the lag issue. Please tell me that you guys don't believe this update is going to eliminate the lag. I highly doubt its going to do much of anything the average game player is going to notice. Basically the only ones who will be happy about this are the people who play 24/7 and will actually notice have no real world life. Anyways im personaly play this game a couple hours a day. I love it but i am getting a little sick of maintenances. I think im just going to tough it out until SOCOM 3 comes out and than be done with FFXI forever. Other than the maintenances i love FFXI. I just don't like the idea of paying for something for the three days or so i cant play it. Its like me putting a couple dollars of gas in my truck and having someone else use it all. Well good luck FFXI players. Don't hate me because I complain. I usually love FFXI but everyone is entitled there opinion.

Well, this has to be a first, the game is down and only half the posts are slating SE. Well, I'll stick my 2 cents in. Like the majority on here I praise SE for their hard work in keeping the servers running as smoothly as possible. (Trust me I've had some terrible experiences with other games). Yeah 18 hours of downtime? SO WHAT? You telling me that you can't find anything to do in those 18 hours? If so then you lead a very sad life. Hopefully it will lead to faster downloads and better service in the long run but to be honest I haven't had much trouble, longest I waited after the last update was 7 hours and that was because I tried to update during US and JP peak times, once it went quiet (in the 3 hours we europeans have) I downloaded the update easily and was straight on.
I doubt there'll be a huge download after this as like previously stated its more of a hardware upgrade and therefore will require few (if any) files to be saved to our systems.
End of the day chill out, stick on a movie, go outside (yeah that open space beyond your door) and FFXi will be back in no time at all.
UPGRADE not UPDATE
# Aug 08 2005 at 11:52 AM Rating: Decent
That they did a couple of week ago was an update not an upgrade. The difference is they added game content a few weeks ago, this time they are updating hardware (servers, routers, etc). I think what happened a few weeks ago (connection issue with update) told them they needed to update their hardware. So everyone that continues to complain about the game being down just remember that this industry is in constant change and requires a lot of upkeep. Enjoy your day off and go get some sun, you looking kinda pale. :-)

Now, I don't care about the updates. I like a game that changes, adapts, improves, etc.

Sometimes the updates are due to the software. I think 18 hours is a little annoying, espically since they always happen on my days off. One of the major reasons why I have such a hard time getting done.

This time its probably the hardware, which works for me, since you know better hardware = better game.

However, now when you have to reinstall FFXI or when a new person starts to play, it takes 4 to 5 hours to download everything. Now with this update, it will probably be 4.5 - 5.5 hours. And I feel really bad for those on a Dial Up connection.

I think it would be only fair if they were to burn a CD set with the download that you have to do when you first install the game, and send it to all the billing addresses. That way you can add it to your FFXI collection and could install it from disk instead of download.

Just a thought.

Well you can do it yourself if you have a DVD burner, I did. Only take about 1 hour rather then the 4-6 hours. Just Zip/RAR the folder so you can fit it all into one DVD. Unrar/Unzip -> to folder.

Once it is done, it will tell you that you have like a Hard Drive Error which then you will have to go thru the file scan of all files which is about 20 minutes. At the end it will, allow you into the game with only up to date downloads.

I have one Disc and planning to make another now due to all these constant updates and such. But it does ease the pain for when I do have to FORMAT or what have you.

Best Regards

Yeah, im on 56k. And recently had another hard drive failure. I was greeted with a 14 hour update. And seeing as dialup is on a 2hr cutoff, it spent the first 30 mins checking files, meaning i got 90 mins download time every 2 hours.
Ive learned my lesson
I backup onto DVD after every update..

Ah, the complaints. The hilariously stupid complaints. Let us begin tearing them apart.

1) "SE is incompetent or they'd have it all fixed by now!"
Are any of you programmers? I doubt it. A lot of work goes into these updates, and with every line of code that gets altered or added, any number of things could go wrong. A large change or update in any program is expected to have bugs, regardless of the skill of the programmers. If it goes flawlessly, it's a miracle. Don't bash on them when you don't know the business.

2) "I wanted to play all day today and now I can't!"
The dates and times for maintenance are almost always put up a week in advace (with the exception of emergency maintenance, which this is not). It's your own fault if you didn't look it up when you made your plans.

With the size of this game, and the amount of traffic their servers get, regular maintenance is to be expected. When they make updates, even more maintenance is to be expected. Just remember that they fix these problems so you can continue to play without problems. Not being able to play for a few hours is much better than being able to play but hitting bugs and glitches.
