What did you call that? -- The great SOW debate

The interesting thing about an online, chat type of game like Everquest is that, while we are all immersed in the game and get to know the terminology of the game intimately, we never actually get to hear the names pronounced. Of course, as all the hooked on phonics folks will tell you, even though we are just reading, we are still sounding out the words in our heads. This leads to an interesting, and rather fun clash when a group of Everquest players finally get together in person to discuss their game. Everyone is convinced that the way they pronounce a name or place or phrase is the right way. The most divided phrase in the game seems to be the most popular as well. When you are shouting for a SOW, are you asking for something that rhymes with Cow or with Tow? Personally, I have always rhymed it with cow. But to my surprise there are a whole load of obviously uninformed people who rhyme it with tow. Go figure. This one debate has practically caused fist fights at the various fan faires. Other common words also can sound quite odd when you hear others speak them. There may be only 120 or so zones (I lost count), but there are probably a thousand different pronounciations of them. Go ahead and ask your friends how they pronounce such zones as Guk (I personally rhyme it with "luck" but others rhyme it with "luke"), Feerrott, Kelethin, Toxxulia (try changing the emphasis on the syllables and see how the whole word changes), and just about every zone in Kunark (are you really sure you are pronouncing Charasis correctly?). Sounds wierd doesn't it? It gets even worse when you start to talk about monsters. Do you buy your items in Cabilis from "Cloaks" or "Clocks" or perhaps "Klucks"? And just try to pronounce anything you meet in the Rathe Mountains. Ankhefenmut? Ankhesenaten? Darfumpel Zrubbel? Zazamaharet? Zazaphenebti? There are plenty more like that. Just go through the list and you will find that, with the exception of the orcs, goblins, kobalds and other creatures from myth or literature, there are usually multiple ways you can pronounce each one. The NPC names are even worse. Does anyone really have any idea how to pronounce Lord Doljonijiarnimorinar? So, taking advantage of the ability to add comments to an article, I figured I would kick off the debate. Below are just a small sampling of words from the game and how I personally pronounce them. Feel free to tell me how wrong I really am.
  • SOW -- Why just like Cow of course.
  • Guk -- Rhymes with "luck"
  • Tizmak -- First syllable rhymes with Wiz, second like Mack.
  • Klok -- "Clock" of course.
  • Kaesora -- "Kay" + "sore" + "uh". Emphasis on second syllable
  • Damask -- Sort of like "The Mask"
  • Sebilis -- First Syllable rhymes with Deb, then "ill" + "iss" with the emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Innoruuk -- "In" + "or" + "ook" as in "look"
  • Teir'Dal -- "Tear" (as in crying) + "Doll"
  • Feerrott -- "Fear" + "Rot"
  • Kael Drakkal -- "Kale" + "drack" + "all"
  • Cabilis -- "Cab" + "eel" + "iss". emphasis on the second syllable.
  • Ry'Gorr -- "Rye" + "Gore"
  • Rathe -- like "wrath"
  • Ankhefenmut -- ank as in "hank" + "uh" + fen as in "pen" + Mutt as in a dog with the emphasis on the first and third syllable.
  • Luclin -- I used to pronounce this "Loose"lin, but was told by the folks at Sony that they pronounce it "Luck"lin. Amazing how they can mispronounce their own game isn't it?
  • Drakkel -- "drack" + "ill". Emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Ulthork -- Ull as in "pull" + thork as in "fork". Emphasis on the first syllable.
  • Rowyl -- Rhymes with "Howl"
  • Froglok -- "frog" plus "lock". How else?
  • Solusek -- Sol as in "Doll" plus "loose" plus sek as in "wreck". Emphasis on the second syllable.
  • Well, you get the picture. Feel free to add in your own interpretation of these and other common words. Who knows, maybe we will all start to speak the same language after a while.

rathe should be like wraith. and e at the end of a word makes the first vowel long. think cap and cape, or tub and tube. thus raht (wrath) and rathe (wraith)

the 'e' only makes the preceeding vowel sound long if they are only seperated by ONE consenant. 'th' is two consenants, so the long sounding vowel rule does not apply.

    Silly puppy.../sigh

If a word exists in the language already (and even though SOW is an abbreviation, unless you say ess oh doubleyou) then it's sow as in the pig. There isn't any room for argument. Sorry, you lose.

Luclin - VI already said it's LUCK-lin and by the english pronunciation rules (which ARE broken a lot, I agree), there is nothing making the U a long U (it would require a vowel immediately after the c and before the l to be a long u)

Qeynos - Quay-nos (Very rarely is a Q word not have a u sound [even with no u present] when pronouncing it. I admit there are exceptions, so Kay-nos would be most acceptable) [ps nos with a long O sound - not nose with a z sound on the s]

Shaman - enough said, as the dictionary allows both

Necromancer - give me a break...this word has been around for years (always been NEKro)

Basically, Alla has them all right except for Cabilis (Kah bill is) and Solusek (Sol as in doll - u as in you - sek rhymes with neck)

Your also kind of silly because the primary pronunciation for for most acronyms is stated so as not to confuse them with RL nouns or places. So if you take the military stand point on acronyms then you would pronounce SoW as Sew and not Sow because Sow could be confused with you speaking of a pig where as Sew does not relate one's mind to a physical object.

    just my 2cp worth...

    OK, I can't help myself.

Obviously this is the one time where the majority have it right. SOW - sew or tow. No doubt about it.

But Shay - man? No its is most certainly Shahman.

    Long ahh short m'n.

For one thing I don't appreciate being called a goober.. I would point out all the mistakes you made in your pronunciations (like how you got an e sound out of words with an o in them.. ) but that would be beneath me. . or would it.. but anyway, yes I got yakashi wrong.. was thinking along the lines of the wakizashis and just kind of got them mixed up.. and since it is ykesha (i-key-sha or e-key-sha) then where the hell did "yak" come from as an abbreviation..

Erudite is a real word, if you want to know how to pronounce it look it up in the dictionary.

You say Fear-rot, I say Fer-roh, you say tomatoe, I say tomatoe..

Ogguk is actually Oggok.. look it up.. I just did.. hehe

again, the SOW in context of Everquest isn't a word anyway, it's an abbreviation, like S.O.L. for Sore outta Luck.. so pronounce however you want to, but I'm not asking for a pig when I ask for Spirit of Wolf.. also a sow is a female pig, male pigs are boars.

To the poster about Bad Grammar? HAH...
I don't know what letters you are seeing when you look at the words you typed.. but how the hell you got a Druh sound out of Dra in Drakkal I'll never know.. or Therk sound out of Ulthork..

I pronounce VEE-SHAN just like it's spelled. Not all of these are difficult...

The word "shaman" has two different pronunciations, that was what I was talking about earlier.. it can be "shay-mun" or "shaw-mon" .. I'm just not good with phonetics sometimes..

I don't spell Luke with a c, so when I see Luclin I see "luck-lin" .. I guess that one is going to be personal preference (wven with the official pronunciation given..) sort of like Qeynos, which is officially Key-nose, you guys keep saying Kay-nose, and I say Quay-noos.

Oh I use english exclusively. I realize that other languages have "weird" pronunciations (hehe, and I realize that people using those languages think english has weird pronunciations) but this game is a game made within the US where we use... English!! So I would think that the pronunciations would be based upon the languages spoken by the designers.

Of course I also realize that some of the designers may speak more than one language.. So then why does everyone argue with the official pronunciations? Because when it comes down to it pronunciation of words is a localized thing. I'm a southerner so I speak differently than a northerner.. it's part of being different people..

so I guess I'll quit badgering everyone now, before everyone else picks on my yakashi.. er, ykesha. ssoy. yak. whatever.... hehe, I also have a short sword of moron for my ranger.. (who cares if it's really a khukri.. it's short and it's a sword.. )

    * Qeynos = kay-nos
    * Feerott = fear-rot, it is not pronounced as if it a french word (although I hear Ogguk smells like France <wink>), ie fee-roh.
    * Ogguk = oh-guk.
    * Ykesha = yuh-key-sha
    * Celerity = sell-air-ity, not celery like the vegetable.
    * Sow = the word already exists in the english language, it's a pig, not really sure why there would be a debate over it. s-ow rhymes with the word you say when you get hit in the head :)
    * Shaman = shah-men. dictionary says shay-men is also right.
    * Luclin = I like luke-lyn better than luck-lin.
    * Verant = ver like vermin, ant like the bug.

Okay I agree with every pronunciation you sounded out Al, excep SoW. Which I say as "SO" only because, saying "SoW, like OUCH" just sounds dumb, that's my opinion. But on the your sounding of Ankhefenmut, I totally disagree. Ankhefenmut -- Definetly sounds egyptian, Ankh, efen, and mut. Pronounced onk (soft A like when a doctor tells you to say Ahhhhh)+Efin (likes saying the letters F and N real fast)+ Mutt or Moot (there is some debate on this pronunciation)

Solusek can not be "Sol" "loose" "sek" since that would pronounce two elles when there is but one. I'd say it was:
"Sol" - as in the sun
    "u" - as in you/ewe
    "sek" - as in neck

Cabilis cannot be "Cab" "eel" "iss" since that would contradict your pronounciation of Sebilis in which the middle syllable is pronounced "ill"
    So:
"Cab" + "ill" + "iss" accent on the second syllable.

As for the infamouse SOW debate, if you want to actually use real-world examples (as I always try to) then it could be pronounced EITHER way.

"sow," as in, "to sow seed in a field," is pronounced with a long "o" simliar to the pronunciation of the word "tow."

"sow," another name for a male pig, is pronounced like the "ou" in "ouch."

Personally, I have always used the former pronunciation, simply because vowels that preceed a letter "W" which itself does not preceed any letter are most often pronounced long though I admit that most of the exceptions to this rule involve the letter "O." Many of these exceptions, however, are slang themselves, and quite possibly mispronounced or, rather, misspelled. i.e. "POW!"

English, more than almost any other language, uses pronunciations based on authorship, as opposed to any sort of set pronunciation ruleset. If the word is initially of French origin, for instance, we pronounce it with French pronunciation, with only slight or nonexistent anglicization, even though it has become a staple of our own language. Since the term "SOW" was defined collaboratively by the entire EQ population, it could be said that each and every player shares the authorship of the "Word" and therefore each has a right to pronounce it any way they please! =)

    There's my 2 copper, haha.
*everybody walks away scratching their heads*

    -Alf

P.S. It's like "Tow" darn it! JK. =P

I pronounce SOW as S O W, the letters. How does everyone pronounce mana? A sounding like in apple or like in asparagus?
    RE: Pronounciations
    # May 22 2001 at 7:03 PM Rating: Default
    Same here, for S O W.
As for mana, I am not exactly sure what the origin of the word is. I most similar word I have ever seen is "manna" of Biblical fame. The original spelling of the Hebrew wording for our "manna" was a combination of two Hebrew characters translating roughly as "Man-Hu" (meaning, essentially, "What is it?").
With that in mind, I have always assumed it was pronounced with a short first "A" as opposed to an open one. However, since I am not aware of the origin of the word, and the word is likely made-up to begin with, I am not entirely sure. =)

S.O.W. is an abbreviation .. not a word.. you shouldn't really be pronouncing it.. you should just say "es-oh-w" (like S.O.L., or S.O.S for that matter)... I just don't see myself in a hog-calling contest when I play EQ.. So SoW to me is pronounced So, sew, whatever... plus "so" is less work than "sow".. you don't have to form that "ow" syllable.. hehe, call me lazy

Therefore you people who think that SoW is pronounced like 'cow' are wrong, it is pronounced like 'sew'. And since I am always right you are obviously wrong.
