Rumors Swirl on EQ2

In the recent EQ newsletter, Sony put in a puzzle that led to two websites: www.nektulos.com and www.wailingcaves.com. (Congratulations to the gang at the safehouse for solving the riddle). Each site brings up an image and the Nektulos one mentions an announcement coming up in May. May is of course when E3 is held. This is the biggest gaming convention of the year, and game companies typically try to save their biggest announcements for the large group of press that comes to E3 each year. So what is Sony going to announce in May? It may be something like a single player game based upon Everquest, or the release of some new zones. However, do not be surprised if it is the launch of Everquest 2. I don't have any positive information on this and am really just speculating, but since they already announced the PS2 version of the game and the Planes of Power expansion, it seems logical that this is not related to either of them. Why make a teaser for something everyone already knows about? And they have never put this type of effort into announcing free content for the game. EQ2, however, would be a huge announcement. In addition, I have been told that the latest version of PC Gamer mentions EQ2 (I have not read it -- I'll try to track down a copy). Plus, Sony has had www.everquest2.com registered for quite a while. So the announcement Sony plans to make in May could well be that they are making EQ2. Or they could just be announcing another expansion or something related to the PS2 version of the game or even something completely unrelated to Everquest. We will be in Los Angeles for E3, so as soon as we find out more, we'll let you know. In the meantime, some of our visitors managed to piece together the murky pictures you see in the two sites.

I dont know about everyone else but I have been playing RPG's for 21 years. Yes I go back to the ORIGINAL dungeons and dragons days. remember those 3 simple books to play the game. look what that turned into hundreds of books and accessories. I like(not love) this game. It is to buggy at times. When EQ2 comes out, I will look at it and make the decision then. Not now. The game has to keep becoming fresh or they will lose their player(and revenue). I say wait until then and check out the game. If they do allow the toons to be moved, make it so it is like now. no money or equipment can be moved. Don't make it an open migration of toons. then everyone has to re-gain their equipment.

Only thing I have to say to Verant is this:

BETA TEST THIS THING TO HELL!!!!!!! MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO OR FEW BUGS TO IT. SoL WAS HORRID!!!!

I think that they should not make a new eq but only keep up gradeing the original i mean who wants to leave EQ and have to start from lvl 1 again I will only get EQ2 if we can still use our old accounts on it as if it was just anothere expansion or somthing

EQ2 takes place 1000 years in the future. By then your characters are all dead, buried, and raised back as some Necro's pet. :P

I mean, by this time even the inimitable Al'Kabor and Firiona Vie have passed on. But then I guess there are probably some bad points too... ;)

Look at games and Game Company Support
    # Apr 28 2002 at 10:38 PM Rating: Default
Not meaning to rain on everyone's parade, but ket us think of something real quick. How many of you have favorite games that the company improved, and then the support for the original game went to zero. (Mechwarrior 2 is a GREAT example). OK, now let us look at Sony/Verant and their STERLING record of customer service (How many days have you tried to get on the phone with them?) And then lets put 2 and 2 together folks. If you really think that Sony/Verant is still going to support EQ after EQ2 comes out, I have a bridge to sell you. It has a good view of Brooklyn. COME ON PEOPLE!!!! Use your heads. Once Sony/Verant releases EQ2, all of a sudden, there are going to be even more server problems (as if there are not enough all ready) fewer guides/GMs, more delays, less patches, and more unfixed issues. The only way that I will even consider this an acceptable situation is if by having an EQ account, that means I have an EQ2 account as well. No paying for 2 accounts. If you have one then you can have both. They are still getting money for the game that way, and for once, not ******** the regular gamer. If anyone thinks that what I say won't come to pass, just look at the game with the legends server as it is now. Who is getting the better end of the deal. EQ2 will do the samen and over time they will kill EQ, and Sony/Verant will do it knowingly. Also, since I do not have the money to go out and buy the UBER machine that to will actually take to run this new game, (anyone else remember when we were still able to play EQ on WIN95), and those of us that really do have real lives (families, jobs, hobbies besides the computer) can't buy a new machine every time the game changes. I will look for the end of EQ as I have come to know and enjoy it.

Clearly some of the people who have been posting on this thread are truly imbeciles, or they merely haven't learned how to read, or to scroll down, or to click the little "next page" icon. I urge you to read through the posts before registering a concern that has already been addressed:

--It is likely that EverQuest will still receive expansions, thought it is doubtful that there will be any more graphics upgrades (see below). Take a look at the map that comes in the box for the Velious expansion. (I think there was a cloth map with Kunark as well.) There are a number of places in Antonica, Faydwer, and Odus that have yet to be fleshed out at all...Wayunder Lake, Rujarkian Hills, the Barren Plains, etc. There is still plenty of material for expansions in EverQuest

--The graphics can't be "fixed" without tearing the game apart and starting fresh anyway, so why not make a new game that has wider appeal? (I'm sure they expect to lose some of their original EverQuest customers through attrition anyway.)Certainly you don't think a software development company will release a sequel that is >>exactly<< like the original, do you?

--As far as new stories for quests and items, there will always be those, but Everquest for the most part is a game full of higher level characters (I'd estimate the average between 35-40 on most servers), so Verant has to make those new quests to suit those levels. Where does that leave the new characters, those of lower levels? Sure, the new beastlord class has some great low-level armor quests, and the new class-specific armor quests in Rivervale and Neriak are pretty good as well, but overall, EverQuest is no longer a game suited to new players. I find it humorous that the staunchest foes of the an EverQuest II are those who have level 60 (or level 50++) characters. What do you have to lose anyway? It's not like you can't continue to play the game with your guildies, and continue to horde camps from the rest of us who actually play for the fun of it instead of showing off our "uber" gear, right? You don't need, nor are you getting, any fresh blood in EverQuest, because it is stale, like a bag of Doritos left open for a week. Verant has had this epiphany, it's high time many of opened your eyes to it as well.

Ultimately, folks, here's what it comes down to:

If you wish to continue playing EverQuest, then, by all means, continue to do so. I suspect Verant will continue to provide it.

If you do not wish to purchase and play EverQuest II, then, by all means, don't. Those of us who look forward to its release and intend to play it do not want to listen to all the complaining in the /ooc channel about how the game sucks.

I, for one, not being an alarmist, intend to wait patiently, purchase the new game when it is released, play it for a while, decide whether or not I like it, and go from there. I suggest those of you Chicken Littles out there do the same...trust me, the sky has not yet begun to fall, and when it does, I don't think it will be because Verant released a new MMORPG. Crikey.

Also, for the love of Marr, (or the hate of Innoruuk, or the indifference of Karana, depending), stop cutting English class, and cut out EQ for a few months and use that money to invest in a textbook!! Some of the grammar here is atrocious.

/em picks up his soapbox, casts gate, and fades away.

I have to agree on one issue though. DAOC has proven and timely tech support. I have an account for DAoC and EQ and I would rather have a tooth pulled with no novacaine than deal with EQ's tech support. Not only are they slow but the ones you have to deal with on the phone seem like they were hired from a temp agency so Verant could save money. They know very little about the game itself and can't answer some of the most simple questions. DAoC support answered my calls quickly when I had a problem and Verant has proven that basically they couldn't give 2 sh*ts about their customers as long as you keep feeding them your cash. And for those of you that are defending Verant...try another RPG before you make your judgement calls and flame people for stating an obvious truth.

And yes I have cancelled my EQ account you no talent *** clown.

Let's face it folks. EQ2= BAD DAOC on Playstation 2. If you don't believe me, here's a little proof:

When they are saying EQ2 they are talking about the one that they theorize is gonna be announced in May, they are not talking about the PS2 version of EQ. This is all stated in the article above.

As we don't even know if EQ2 really exists or not and it is pure speculation. Then where are you getting this (I guess) inside info from? Are you an ex verant employee fired for selling secrets to DAOC?

On the subject of theft. There has not been a truly new idea in the fantasy genre or the gaming world in the last 20yrs. They do things a little different here and there but it is all pretty much the same. Different medias but that is all. When I was a kid, my siblings and I spent most of our time on the Starship Enterprise, we used Valentine's day plastic candy heart boxes as comnunicaters and had to just pretend Spock spoke back. Then when I was a teenager we played D&D (Oh and that game killed people also, nothing new on people dying over EQ. Also my grandmother back in 1928 almost died in an RPG when her sisters hung her by the neck because she stole their horse). So we played RPGs with our imaginations and simple props(and real ropes), then RPGs with paper and pencil, oh yeah and then we did it on the Super NES (LOL) and now it is on PCs. Same thing different props.

ok, check this out, Ultimala online was first, then it was Everquest which was alot differant from ultimal online. Asherons Call came out which sucked and was alot like Ultima Online, DAOC comes out and is alot like Asherons Call, now EQ2 is next in the list, its alot like DAOC, so alot of the ideas that u know of, originaly come from ultimal online, u can get houses on Ultima online, u get hit in specific areas in Ultima Online, depending on the armore u have in a certian slot, determines how much damage u take when u are hit there. so STFU that DAOC is so original cuz its NOT

If you hate Verant so terribly much, then go ahead and cancel your account, instead of whining about how bad their customer service is, and how bad this as-yet-to-released-still-for-almost-2-count-'em-2-years-game is going to be. Save your breath and speak with your (or perhaps your mommy's?--please forgive me if you actually spend your own hard earned cash to keep your account going) wallet. You seem to like DAoC an awful lot, why not go play that? Just please dont play on Igraine server, that's the one I'm on. Thanks. :p

Um Ultima Online had the land buying thing and the "tradesman" going before DAoC or EQ2. So I'd say that EQ2 is a bad combonation of the gayest parts of UO and DAoC. Yay! Go Verant with another great idea!

Ok many people are excited about EQ2 but many more are NOT. Now think you are a big company who has recieved some complaints about the same old thing on every zone and item. But, really what are ya gonna do? It's only a game and everything is gets old after a while. BUT! think the thought that verant is making a new game of EQ and deeming the old one "obsolete". Now think why do they make one pay money yearly, monthly, etc. 'cause it costs alot of money to keep everything under control. Now if they have to take the old amount then add a new game which runs on a stronger engine and will prolly have less people then the less expensive one what will they do to "force" people to play their game. heres a thought; shut down the old one. They may or may not do it but the idea that they want to make this game so real all it does is scare people who dont want to get jumped by griffons and afraid of becoming newbs again. But also they are going to seperate the geeks from the people who have lives outside this game where the people with lives are afraid of the geeks who will take this game FAR too seriously (think star trek). But my final rant being a high lvl. If velious and kunark are gone where will the dragons go?

Today when I read about EQ2 it was a mixed feeling. Sure new grafix would be great along with new lands and powerful monsters. Yet I believe EQ should be improved upon. Fix our grafix and make new stories for quests and items.
Yet at the same time Verant must realize a few things. Allot of people will never leave EQ and some will. But the original concept of Everquest is what so many have come to love. Change from that concept to much and you will have people looking for new games. =/

    # Apr 28 2002 at 2:32 PM Rating: Default
Being a player that just recently quit DAoC to come back to my "love in games" EQ. I see that alot, a serious amount of proposed changes for EQ2 are extremely similair if not excatly the same as DAoC. Breakable gear (same), level advancement through choices of disciplines (same), Chasing monsters through zones (similair) not exactly...as DAoC has no zones like EQ except for city areas. Minimal or no exp loss upon death of a character and having gear to stay on your character (near the same).

Makes a person think...if the is the new EQ, then why not just go play DAoC or AO again, seems close enough to them. Without loss of exp when you die, then leveling will be too easy, probably why they are talking about upping the level max to 100, maybe above that in the future. One reason I love EQ so much now, is that it's not easy to level, unless you can twink or get Power Leveled by someone. Forcing someone to "do it themselves" makes the end result so much more rewarding.

I do like the idea of switching to a new version of the game due to coding problems with what VI has with EQ now. I also like the idea of changing to a later date in time so as everything as it is in EQ now will have to be re-thought out in how you go here or there, due to changes in culture or cities and including landscapes and dungeons. I do like the idea of items in the game only being usable once a person has attained a certain level...that would seriously help out with the twinking problem EQ has now, it would also get players to work on getting things they can use now, rather than just camping a mob for cash so they can buy an awesome weapon that well above thier level, which may also help in more players learning trade skills, primarily for thier own characters use, rather than to just make profit.

I hope that items are not all level required, meaning there would be no reason that say a "handmade backpack" or "Herbalist's Pack" couldn't be used by a 5th level character. Maybe make magical items with a minimum level requirement to equip and use.

There are alot of good things that can be improved upon or rethought of how to do for the new generation of EQ, but don't change the entire game to something else completely. Most of the EQ community will not switch if it turns out to be like a newer version of DAoC with better graphics. That would be a waste, IMHO.

I played Everquest last year and had quite a few charactors on Torvonnilous (or whatever is called). My highest being 53 and lowest 30, anyway I think its time to move on. If they take all the things that made everquest great and remove all the things that made it frustrating etc, then as gamers we could be left with a excellent game...

To all those who are moaning about their lvl60 Charactors then imagine this, if we never bothered to advance then we'd still be playing doom and med95 insted of Quake3 or Everquest.

Furthermore I believe that they are going to set this game, whatever it may be, two centuries from the current century in everquest and 50% of the game will be new zones and the other 50% will be the same zones but with massive changes implimented in them. Wouldn't it be cool walking through a city that has been abandoned and left to its own devices? How about commonlands turning into a jungle? Or maybe one of the oceans has been permentally frozen and turned into a whole new land. ETC ETC

Its time to move on ladies and gentlemen and I for one cant wait....

I can see where Verant would have to clean up their code after so many patches, but why would they switch to Turbine's AC2 engine. From what I have seen, the plans to EQ2 seem uncannily similar to those of AC2, and if this is the case I will go with Turbine.

I have several friends whom play Asheron's Call,(AC) and all are eager to play the new AC2, because it will primarily stay consistant with its predecessor, and will also provide all the advantages of MMORG second generation games. When I started playing, I had a choice, and I chose Everquest(EQ). Some of Verant's aspects of the game may have seemed either weaker, or more harsh than Turbine's, but I liked the whole of the game and chose Verant's product. Now Verant is coming out with its own second generation MMORG, but it won't stay consistant with its predecessor. This bothers me. If they are going to copy AC2, why should I not go with the company that created and perfected that engine?

If Verant supports EQ after the release of EQ2, I will stay where I am, but if not then I will switch my loyalties to Turbine. This is all based on the description of the EQ2 engine as it stands. If EQ2 becomes more consistant with the EQ game I love, then I will probably play EQ2.

I cant imagine them spending so much time to get planes of power out only to make it obsolete in a year. We'll have to wait to see what Sony has to say, but I think the last thing they want is to throw all this revenue out the window...all the gamers who are worth their weight in salt are already playing eq. ok, first off.. i am an avid Everquest player and have played for a long time on many different servers(pvp being the best).
Secondly, i have just finished 2hrs 20mins of reading the forum posts up to this point and i must say, many(most) of you are quite obsessive about all the "hard work" you have put into everquest, and are also very "uninformed" about the process of creating a quality gameing experience for consumers.
I am sure by now we all know this refers to EQ2. I for one am happy to hear of all the new features they will be offering me as a player.
I, personally am a game designer myself, with participation in all(in some degree) aspects of a game(mainly graphics and 3d models and environment). From the posts i have heard, none of you understand exactly why it is that you like everquest to begin with. The new features given will increase interactivity as well as provide a much more rich and complex environment to more easily immerse yourself into.
For all those who are crying selfishly "what about all my lvl 60 chars that i have workes sooooo hard on and spen sooooo much time and money on!" i have one thing to say:
    EQ2.
    -notice the 2?
that means its a whole other game. If you cant let go of your chars that you have with EQ, thats fine, stay with EQ. i am sure it will continue as a game.
As for those of us who consider the origional EQ to be an appetizer of things to come, we will be STARTING a new character, as well as a new adventure with EQ2.

overall, the game sounds great, and none of you who are flaming it have any right to do so, as you have not played, or even seen enough of it to make a decision. you can just take all your "loyalty" (selfishness) and stay in the past.

by the way, all these features will never be included into the current engine as the whole premise for the creators to do it is to make more money, take it from a creator: a new game = a new vessel to carry new bells and whistles to players for a new fee.

oh ya, and it will absolutely NOT be a single player RPG as those make no money.

SOE if your reading this (or fished your way to it), great ideas, great look, hope you can pull it off. I do have 2 issues you have probably already addressed... first, for gods sake, give us a larger inventory capacity. and second, finite amount of in-game world space = limited number of player land ownership... look at any Ultima Online server.

    # Apr 28 2002 at 6:21 PM Rating: Default
I cant disagree with you more sir...sure EQ2 sounds cool, new stuff always seems cool but how many of us here can acyuallt say we WANT to start over after all the time we spent on these chars. And another thing you say that the people that remain loyal can stay and play the first EQ but what about all the people leaving to play EQ2? the original EQ world as we know it could shatter into something not worth anyones time, then EVERYONE would have to play EQ2 if they wanted a decent game but they'd have to start over............

anyway I totally disagree with this idea, they need to improve the original EQ not make a new one, thats bull and I hope evryone can realize that

I agree with what you are saying, although I do think it would be good if EQ characters could be moved into EQ2. This would help SoE as well as it will bring people playing the old Everquest to more easily go into EQ2.

people, think about one thing, how menny of your request to them have thay responded to that "Thay can't do it" do to the way the game works, in makeing a sequal thay are redoing the way the game works. and thay are also thinking about us the custimers. EQ2 is bound to be a good game in my opinion..

Firther more , as a sequal QUIT wining about not being able to transfer chars.. there are sacrifices in all things, including this... rember your EQ1 Exp fondly and rember the fun you had, but dont wine that you can't take your char with you.

start over have fun, the one thought people should be haveing is not takeing the char with you, thats not the most important thing, but you and your online frends going to the same new EQ2 server and playing with each other there. after all the Friends you made in EQ is the only true reward for the time you played

Why can't they just add these features in expansions slowly but surely, like that new planes of power or whatever the hell it is.

My guess is they can't add these features to the present EQ because of the engine it's on. Unlike the originator of this post I am not into game development, but from what I've read over the years, alot of what a game can do is dependant on the engine it's running on. The present EQ engine couldn't handle all the things listed above without either a) creating massive lag or b) creating an even buggier enviroment. Look at the SoL expansion, they tried to introduce a lot of new features and ended up having to totally rewrite the basic system specs for playing simple regular EQ. EQ2 = new technology = new engine = no integration.
And definately no character swapping. Everyone who even mentions character swapping needs to go back and read the list again and again until the concept of a new class system finally sinks into their heads.

Fact it that new and improved games are always cool but clonning an old game even with improvments is crap.. specially when we are talking about an online world like EQ.. the changes should be made to the original. Starting over with the same concept is cheap and very uncool!!
