From SE: This is an update information regarding FINAL FANTASY XI login and version update difficulties due to server congestion after the Apr. 20, 2005 FINAL FANTASY version update. After readjusting the server equipment to relieve server congestion by our technical staff, the situation have vastly improved. However, we will continue to monitor the situation. If you are still receiving POL-1160 or POL-0010 errors on the FINAL FANTASY XI version update screen, please try again some time later. We apologize for the inconvenience and the length of the delay in successfully addressing this issue, and we appreciate your patience.

Whiney *** freaks. If you're a PLD/WAR then I would expect some whining. but I dont think anyone runs around using provoke on ppl in RL, so get the F over it already, download it (if you can lol) reboot and lets get back to killing things.

something you don't get, .43$ it's nothing but
multiply this by the number of player and you get
a **** load of money to pay back for SE. trust me
if they had to refund this everytime they can get

work to improve the system. and it's not like it's
a new and unique problem, i've been playing for a year and it's the same thing after every upgrade. you would think they have figured out the problem
by now.

Geeez!!! What a bunch of whiny cry-babies!!! All of you complain and complain about how much SE is doing a bad job that you missed the big picture:

SE has developed a game much bigger and better than than any MMO that you've ever played (admit it) - and if not, what are you complaining about if there is something out there that is better??

If you think you can produce a better Network Server...do it. Apply to SE and get paid millions of $$$ and make the community a whole lot better.

You want to be compensated, what, $0.43?? Big-WOW! You're really losing out on a lot of money now aren't you...

You think that each of those servers are built to perfection? LOL I work for an ISP, and there are outages DAILY! There is no such thing as perfect, so stop thinking that SE is.

To tell you the truth, I think SE is doing a damn good job and to keep up the good work. I will be VERY upset on the day they close down servers for 'bigger and better things' (which is inevitable, unless of course they become greater than Ever-crack...which is possible).

So please...before you start threatening that you are leaving, start thinking about the hassles that they're going through. If you own a server, try hosting thousands of people playing a game on it and see if you can keep them all happy. Otherwise, STFU or go somewhere else.

How hard is it to set up download mirrors?

Think about it. FTP sites have been mirrored for at least the last 12 years (probably MUCH longer). The DOS based terminal program that I ran on my 25 year old Tandy 1000, Telix, had a dialer built into it that would try different phone numbers until it found one it could connect to.

It's not a matter of discovering some fantastic new technology. It's a matter of understanding the problem and taking adequate steps to deal with it.

I tell you what... you pay for your food, and have it in your refrigerator... and wait for the grocery store to tell you that its ok for you to eat it...

you posess the right to eat it due to your payment at time of billing (checkout) but yet your not able to eat it why?.... because the grocery store didn't say you could.... well Playonline, i have Paid for, and I'm ready for my meal.. but well i'll be.. the grocery store didn't say i could.. so i'm stuck here..

RiconDaPld, do you think that SE makes at $13+ per user x the professed Million and 1/2 people. you would think they could afford to expand their server locations to multiple locations, also... have you ever seen Microsoft since the inception of high speed internet access, ever time out on you.
With the exception of a 2 day period in which they were targeted by a majority of the computers running Microsoft windows containing a DDos Virus.

Now lets do the math

$13.00 x 1,500,000 = 19,500,000 per month
19,500,000 x 12 = 234,000,000 annually in residual income, that isn't accounting for additional accounts/mules that may be added.

I may not be a Genious, but doing a simple google search I was able to find a location where i could colocate some servers ( servers that i own, for use online) for a sum total of $8100 for Unlimited bandwidth at 100 MB and space for 6 server Racks witch have the potential of holding 44 individual servers, so for $8100 per month they could add another server farm from which they could draw some of the bandwidth that would support the current users.

Now... are they being good to us supporters of their product, or are they merely spending the bare minimums to allow them to continue to make money?

Also, you must realize that it isn't as simple serverwise as to say they are running 32 servers, all the named servers people play on such as Odin and Kujata. Think about it, have you ever read the updates that say something along the lines of "maitenance to the Auction House server"?

LOL. That has to be the most clueless analysis of a situation that I have ever been privy to. And yes, you are right, you are not a Genious... or even a genius for that matter.

For the sake of arguement, I'll go with your calculations regarding the income SE might make on subscriptions of FFXI yearly. However, after that part you take a ride on the short bus...

The costs for support any company are massive, especially one like SE. Supporting a game like FFXI you need (at a minimum):

- servers.
- data center space to house the servers.
- racks to house the servers.
- electricity to power the servers.
- AC systems to cool the servers.
- support contracts for the servers.
- network switches.
- network routers.
- firewalls
- cabling
- multiple connections to the internet with huge bandwidth
- non-game servers (web, mail, office support)
- game designers
- game programmers
- graphic artists
- network adminstrators
- systems administrators
- web site designers
- information security staff
- technical support staff
- credit card authorization systems
- translators
- offices for the staff
- adminstrative staff (accounting, legal, office support, managment).
- marketing staff.
- manufacturing staff (those CDs don't get made by elves).
- supply and distribution staff.
- advertising.

And here's the catch junior... all of that (and much more that I left out) all costs MONEY. The funny thing is, $234,000,000 really doesn't go all that far...

If it is so easy, then start your own MMORPG. Once you have a wildly successful worldwide MMORPG with over a million users who never experience technical problems, then feel free to speak of the subject again...

Actually, on second thought, just don't speak ever...

I personally dont see what the problem is .. ok its taking ages to download the update and its taking ages to log in but hey .... its only a game .... alot of ppl seem to think that FFXI is oxygen and without it they will die ... well NEWSFLASH.............

Maybe if you cant get logged on try doing something in the real world . instead of wanting to be compensated.

And think what you may ... "oh she's not a dedicated player!" .. well yes i am. But i also happen to know how to hold on to reality...

Plus complaining about having to download something is just sucky as, you complain when no new zones are added and then complain when you have to add new zones.

Im not wanting to rub any one up the wrong way here but i just thought i would vent my frustation to ppl who keep complaining about SE!!

You've got issues yourself. We are complaining because we are paying for something we couldn't use. This issue was avoidable, and I hope SE makes sure this does not happen again. In the meantime, you my friend, are the one who needs a life if you have nothing better to do than to get on here and ramble like that. But I digress...

I didn't get on until 9:30 last night, and didn't get to play because I had some studying to do. I have a great connection and it took almost 5 hours to download and install. ><

people complain because,there have been updates bigger than this with no where near the congestion problems as this.

Whats the big difference. We are all paying money monthly to play when we want. SE should do their best to let us play and they aren't doing a very good job so its our right to complain

Oh my god,, 10 hours reformatting my puter yesterday,redling programs I need re-installing my vice (FFXl) and actually getting on the site @ 2:30 in the morning in order to dl updates while I sleep, only to find out this morning (before work) that a problem occured and I didnt get the dl :( I am so sick of paying and not playing I love the game but sincerely hate the lack of planning on SE side of things if Im not on tonight I wont be on anymore :( which really sux cuz I love this game :( :(

PLEASE DEDICATE SOME OF THAT R&D BUDGET ON THE R AND NOT ON THE D it's nice an all that your adding these neat new features... but duh! what good are they if i cannot even connect to playonline let alone the server i'm on. why cant I connect? POL-0011 error, now at 15 times. why is it that you have the budget to add all the neat new ENM's and stuff.. but cant afford a decent ddos filter. Furthermore, why is it that every OTHER program I have used since 1988 that has an update, i get prompted to download that update, then install that update.. instead of check username/id , check version #. if version matches current version then step 3 else check individual files.

if we give them a hard time about does it hurt their feelings.....no, so why not just live with it or quit. BTW this is the largest MMORPG to date so trouble can only be expected when 15k or more try to do the same thing at the same time, so please just give em a break^^

They will never compensate. I activated my character back on june 29th and i played for 29th and 30th, but SE charged me for a whole month. So, they will never compensate.

Then you should talk to customer service, because everyone one else got prorated. Are you sure they didn't pro-rte your 2 days then charge you for the following month? You pay in advance.

Can SE apologize to my plants, too? Why not just distribute the download in one encrypted file across multiple servers, just let us download and run it ourselves. Verify the files when we log back on, instead of ******** up the entire FFXI network with this abortion of an update process. What a joke.

Yeah, I wish they did external updates, but this is where they check for some h4xx0r5 with the file check, which takes forever in itself.

I think that SE should compensate us for the lack of planning on their part, they should have anticipated a discgruntaled former player, and have taken measures to prevent the lag caused by the DDoS attacks, furthermore they should reimburse us for the lact of our ability to A) download the patch that they have instituded, and B) for preventing us for gameplay instead of downloading the patch

I feel that i should be compensated for 1/30 of my monthly fees, since i pay for 3 accounts that adds up

$14/30 =46 cents. Even at 3 accounts thats less then $1.50. Am I upset that I havn't been able to get on ffxi for 3 days. Yes. Am I upset that they always do updates in the morning and on weds when I work nights and have wed off. Yes but do I understand their side. Yes. They didn't plan for a ddos and it not as simple as just going, oh a ddos, flip all better. And as far a compensation even if you have 15 mules per account your talking about $3. I'd say keep the check. Just take it in stride cause you will notice that their is no guarentee up time and do something else. I took photos and clean/rearanged my basment that was much in need.

Help me figure something out here...

The 4/20 update came out less than 48 hours ago... How does that make it possible for you not to be able to play for 3 days?

Since I logged off at 1:00am EST on 4/20 and it is now 10:00pm EST on 4/21, I have been offline for 45 hours... By what trick in the space time continuum is it possible for you to be offline for over 72 hours?

he hasnt been able to play for three days because playonline isnt working for some people either, like me.
