Plague or Treat?

DAoC Halloween

Plagued if you do, damned if you don't!

One of the most amazing things about these fantastic games we play is the storyline. All too often though, as much as players are told they can influence and affect the world around them, they're relegated to the position of audience instead of storyteller.

The Lich King, Arthas himself, brought pain and suffering to the people of Azeroth this last week flinging zombies upon the world to create havoc and chaos. It seems that while some players embraced the opportunity to become part of the event, others found their play times disrupted. However, for every player that was frustrated by the invasion, as many found themselves enjoying Blizzard's creativity.

Players fought the zombies mercilessly, but succumbed to a zombie curse themselves once they found their target slain. While normally factions can not fight each other, the zombie plague allowed anyone zombieified to attack any non-zombie player. This led to griefing, in some instances by higher level players on their own allies.

The frustration, for most players, came from the fact that they were forced to participate, whether they consented to the battles or not. Participation came with sky high repair bills for armor and equipment, after multiple deaths in many cases, adding to the angst and defeat of those who wanted no part.

Those who embraced the event found themselves either infecting zombie-ism across the land, or curing zombies to bring them back to their normal state. The battle raged on across the lands, and, in a twist that excited almost everyone, players of Alliance or Horde were unified in their zombie state, and were able to communicate with each other!

So why the hate? Well, for the most part people despise not being able to play the game they're paying for without being hindered in manners they can't choose. It's perfectly understandable really. You log in every night at 7:30, after a long day at work and playing with the kids. You hit the auction house, grab your buddies and head out for the night's adventure.

But before you can even make it out of Stormwind you're attacked and killed 12 times, or turned into a zombie and attacked by others. In fact, it was rumored that the worst issue came from higher level characters sweeping through low level areas and devastating those who couldn't fight back. What fun is that? Trying to buy or sell something? Sorry! Your auction master has been defeated in the plague and will respawn shortly, only to be killed instantly once again.

The call of "I play on a PvE server for a reason" became the calling card of all those who found their playtime disrupted and unenjoyable through no fault of their own. No one enjoys being forced to participate in anything that they don't want, and the great thing about MMOs is that you can always go find something else to do...at least, unless you were playing WoW last week.

For the other folks though, the event is being called the most well put together, implemented, story driven, chaotic, fun event - ever!! There's no way that WoW players don't know that the arrival of the Lich King is imminent, and isn't that the idea behind a "story driven" world? Those who became zombies, or helped fight them off found themselves banded together in common cause and enjoyed a fantastic event that honestly blew everyone in the genre away with creativity and fun.

These folks had a taste of the storytelling that Blizzard is famous across all genres and games for. Who could ask for more?

I guess, in the end, you can't please all the people all of the time. For those who play on PvE servers for a reason I know that Blizzard was only trying to give you a different experience and, obviously, it wasn't appreciated. For the folks who spent the last week or so constantly zombied or healing their fingertips off, know that you took part in an MMO experience that no one has matched, and few are likely to ever try. A true tragedy, honestly.

When events are staged in most MMOs, either by volunteer staff or game masters employed by the studios, carnage and chaos often ensue. It is fair to say that most MMO events call for mobs that are un-killable, and players being killed mercilessly. Oftentimes zones or areas where the event is being staged become overburdened by the amount of people and action and often crash or become so lagged that it's impossible to enjoy the event.

While those who choose to participate could have fun, more often than not those who do not want to participate are sometimes forced, and those who wish to have trouble gaining access to the zone or mobs required as players flock to events.

It's good to see we've moved past that time. Technology and tools are providing events in MMOs much more often now, but the fact remains some players hate some events, and others love them. It's not that much different from tastes in game play styles.

But even now, another WoW event is going on - It's Hallow's End! Trick or Treat, and enjoy the fun - until the next controversial event comes around!

Happy Halloween!

Boss: Hey guys, we need an event to emphasize that change is coming. We need to introduce all of our customers to the Lich King.

Programmer1: Geez Boss, every time you want to do a promotion, we have to spend countless hours of overtime writing the code to make the changes.

Programmer2: And after making the changes, we have to update the code based on all the tickets that get submitted by the little monsters- umm I mean customers. I know it's our job, but it's a pain in the rear.

Boss: I know its a thankless task, but you are part of the largest mmo in the world! We are about to embark on the largest growth potential yet to date with the expansion and we need to reestablish ourselves as a content driven online game! We need to make sure EVERYONE wants to buy the new stuff. Our Christmas bonuses are tied to pre-orders.

Programmer1: Well we could send an email to everyone from the Lich King, introducing himself and inviting them to Northrend for a cup of tea.

Boss: Bigger! We need to engulf these players with the new content. We need something that will drive them crazy if they don't purchase the expansion pack.

[Intercom Buzzes]
Boss' secretary: Sir, your limo is waiting to take you to the airport.

Boss: Well guys, I'm off to Jamaica for a month. I trust you to do the right thing for all of us. Go get'm!
[Boss grabs hat and makes for the door]

Programmer1: Well I guess it's up to us. New content... Lich King... drive them crazy...

Programmer2: Hey , I got an idea! We'll start this plague that will infect those that defend against it. It will create a pocket in each city that will become quarantined. Nobody will be able to move through the city without noticing it.

Programmer1: Sounds neat but how do we code it?

Programmer2: I have this nifty little virus I've been playing around with. Got it from this guy. We simply add it to the game code and let it propagate through the servers.

Programmer1: Maybe we should run it through some tests first...

Programmer2: Nah... let's grab a mocha latte.

...And thus the plague of 2008 was born

i seriously think those who were 'crying' about the event were those who couldn't cure themselves. seemed like every priest, paladin, shaman, or anyone who had a buddy that was of those classes had fun.

i still don't get why everyone was complaining. me? sure i have alts that i was trying to lvl up; when the zombies killed them i joined them and fought alongside till i died then i'd get my lvl 70 paladin and kill the zombies. now if you DONT have a lvl 70...why are you complaining you can't quest? you're sure as hell not going to make lvl 70 before Wrath, unless you dont work and can spend the /played 14days it takes to go 1-70 all in /realTime 14days (it took me /played 15days to 1-70; but /realTime of about 1month to 1-70). so i dont see why players didn't just roll with it. so what if you were forced to participate. do you actually want to just quest, lvl, arena the rest of your WoW-days away? with no change...no spice...just same-old-same-old? trust me it may seem fine now, but give it a few months and you'll find yourself bored of the game.

i suspect it was players who have the "i hate events"-mentality that caused blizzard to release BT as 'just another raid' AQ..Nax..they all had Opener Events (MC may have, with the elemental invasion thing; was before my time :P ). end-game content should ALWAYS have an Opener Event, i remember seeing the April fools joke for the BT event that had city invasions and the like and was sorely disappointed to learn that Illidan had been downed and that there was no event (sort of like how sunwell's 'Gates' were downed to get to the various bosses).

in sort,
think of world events as a time to make yourself known to the server, a time to show others you've got skill..who knows maybe you'll save the 'life' of a guild master from a high-end Raiding Guild and get a g-vite; 4hours twice a week and you can be sporting tier gear ;)

>>with no change...no spice...just same-old-same-old? trust me it may seem fine now, but give it a few months and you'll find yourself bored of the game.<<

I've been playing about three years, questing, levelling, doing instances, battlegrounds, and I'm not bored yet. There is a lot to this game. Maybe if you're bored with it without the griefing, you're not experiencing the play fully. I've seen so many players leave the game out of boredom when all they concentrate on is levelling as quickly as they can.

Imagine, as was written below, someone new to the game not being able to reach level 2 because level 70 zombies thought it would be fun to attack the newbie areas of the game. Not much of an impression made, and if they were on trial accounts, likely wouldn't bother spending the money to play a game where it was impossible to get to level 2.

The suggestions of making it voluntary or restricted to higher levels (or at least letting someone have some kind of defense mechanism so it doesn't feel like griefing) are valid.

I think of it in these terms. Would the lore even exist if this hadn't happened before. You're playing a game where people were turned to undead against their will to begin with IE The Forsaken. So in keeping with the story line they have Arthas attempting to do it again. If you don't like it go play something else till its over. This games story line has alot of things that have the ability to "ruin" your playing experience in the same manner if Blizzard so deems it. This in fact is considered monumental for some people because the likelyhood of it happening again is next to never. So enjoy being part of something rare. And for all of you limited time people I work full time wife and kid and play 2 mmo's. If your playtime is that precious maybe you should consider another hobby.

During the three or four days, if I had decided to wait till it was over, would Blizzard have discounted my monthly fee...? The answer is obviously NO.

Is an event a good idea? Of course. I wish they had events all the time, but playing directly into the hands of griefers is not ever going to turn out to ne a fun event. WoW is a MMORPG. Massively-Multiplayer online role-playing game.

Game - Yup. It's a game.
Role-playing - Yup. None of us have ever seen a harpy, so it's obvious we're in a role that we aren't in in real-life.
Online - Yup. I gotta have internet service of some type or the other to play.
Massive - Yup. With 11 million subs, I'd say it is massive.
Multi-player - Yup. I'm not the only one in the game. I talk to other people and (I think) they are real too.

The problem lies in what this means. We all understand the RPG part and the first M of Massively, but it seems that the vast majority don't understand the multi-player part. Let me try to explain.

Multi-player means that there are other, real-life, people playing in the same virtual space at the same time you are. It does NOT mean that to play ANY content, you need to cooperate, group, raid, or even talk to those other people. Solo play is completely understandable. You interact with other players if you want to, not because you have to do so.

This past event turned that upside down. In order to even turn in quests, you had to dodge players that were out to ruin what you were trying to do. On a PVP server, this is understood by everyone who chooses to play on that type. When you create a character on a PVE server, it is with the understanding that, unless you choose to accept a duel or attend one of the battlegrounds, you will NEVER be attacked by another player. PCs and NPCs react completely different to stimuli. I can run from an NPC and after a certain distance, the NPC will stop chasing. A PC can chase me from Winterspring to Silithus, damaging me all the way. The argument that it could just have been NPCs is a false one.
Slab Rankle could have controlled them.

Honestly, two things needed to be done to make this event perfect, IMO.

1)AH NPCs and flightmasters should have been immune to the plague(if enough zombies swarm em, let em be killed, but one zombie hitting them shouldn't mean certain, annoying death).

2)All people who become zombies become level 70 zombies. This would have allowed them to participate in some way.

I became a zombie a few times myself, and only once when I didn't want to participate(I accidentally hit Iceblock instead of Blink as I was running to the AD Healer). I had to take measures to kill zombies as I was going places once in a while to prevent myself from becoming infected, but that's as it should have been. Then again, I play a mage, and we're hard to hit when we don't want to be hit.

But still, I feel if those two conditions had been met, this event would have been a ton of fun for almost all people instead of seeing the large split in opinions we do now.

I am one of those who ticketed, complaining because I could not play for something I paid for - I read somewhere they were getting thousands of tickets a day complaining - and now we have 3 free days. Blizz say it is because of this disruption due to the patch - which actually seemed to be minimal. I believe it is due to the disruption caused by the horrific zombies. Had I been able to download LOTRO before the zombies vanished I would have stopped playing on both my accounts.

While I appreciate Blizzard's attempts to offer additional/seasonal events, I didn't care for the effect the plague had on the cities. It often made it impossible to use flight masters, turn quests in, etc.

I usually partake in the events to a degree but I don't change my schedule for them. Being a casual gamer (read working husband/father) I too need to make the most of my free time.

But instead of giving up or complaining I simply spent the majority of the time cleansing and healing the youngsters and NPCs as well as eliminating the undead in SW/Elwynn Forest, Westfall and Duskwood/Darskshire.

There were many lower level people trying to play/quest but couldn't and the horde brought their 70's to cause trouble. Being a Pally using undead gear the zombies didn't last long and as far as I know only one person turned on my watch (although a large party of zombies finally got me and turned me too fast for my own cleansing - but just once). I went to the forest and blew myself up then hit the party again.

It'd be nice if there was an opt in/out like the /PvP command for such events so that people without interest or too low a level can play uninterrupted.

It'd also be nice if the high level folks leave the lower levels alone. Perhaps a penalty (exp/money/honor) for ganking low level players would help or immunity for players 5+/- levels below an attacker (if the low level player opted out/didn't join a fight intentionally)?

When I played FFXI....the first Christmas that came had a world event. It seemed that the taru-taru 'scientists' had miscalculated when trying to breed a new tree to be the center of each cities Christmas celebrations.... The tree became sensate, and went on a rampage...not liking the decorations placed upon it. it had MILLIONS and MILLIONS of hitpoints....and devastating attacks....you could participate by talking to a nearby NPC who gave you immunity to exp-loss while fighting for a specified time {A BIG issue in FFXI} and then you went to town....no groups were necessary....it was nice to see JP and NA players all working toward a common goal....KILL THE TREE!!!!....it USUALLY took 75-100 players fighting it 24/7 for 3-4 days to kill it...and the reward? We got the ability to teleport to certain places in the world via an NPC...rather than running everywhere via mounts.... It was an EPIC event...and VERY fun...and didn't FORCE you to be a part of it...and...had a reward that benefited the entire server.

Now THAT is a server event....IMHO.

Take care all,

LOL, took us 3 straight days of fighting the treant outside Bastok.
People would take a break & go back into town yelling for more ppl to come and help. We werent forced to fight, but we tried to shame everybody who didnt into coming out lol.
That was definitely a great memory of ffxi for me, met a lot of people, had a grand time.

Plague in the a**e!

I'm sorry, but I couldn't even be bothered complaining. I learned through experience it rarely does any good. On a PVE server with lvl 70 horde rampaging through Westfall killing every quest giver, merchant and flight master - repeatedly, all the game masters ever told me was to go PVP and fight back (hmm, lvl 25 vs lvl 70) or ask the lvl 70s for help (and how often do you see lvl 70 players giving up their raiding time to defend Westfall on a PVE server?)

The launch of the Burning Crusade when the demon attacked the major cities was bad enough, but at least you had the chance to hop a Griffon away from the city to another zone and carry on adventuring. I play PVE for a good reason. I don't like PVP, I like to quest. I have 2 lvl 70s, a frost mage very nearly there and working up a Paladin and a Warlock. But with the plague it became impossible to do anything. I love the Hallows End events, but trying to put out fires in Goldshire just to find that you've been infected by the plague and turned into a zombie made a laughing stock of the entire game.

I had to do some fast talking to persuade my partner from throwing the game in completely as it became impossible to play. Westfall, Griffon masters dead, quest givers dead, ran to Darkshire, same there, ran to Stormwind, couldn't get through the gates alive, then couldn't get out. In the end I just turned the game off and went and bought something else, something I've not done since staring WoW nearly 3 years ago.

This has been a marketing disaster for Blizzard. I tried to help one guy out who had just bought the game that week. He installed it, patched it, loaded it, created his character, logged in and was dead. His two friends gave it a couple of hours before they took the game back to the shops demanding their money back as it was unplayable. He was talking of doing the same.

As for me, though I enjoy playing WoW, this have given me the incentive to try something else, and to be honest, I'm enjoying the new game. Whether I'll return after the launch of the Lich King (which I do have on order), or finally cancel my account I don't know (I doubt it). WoW is a very well crafted game, it does have it's niggles and glitches, all games do, but blizzard need to learn that a game must be playable to be enjoyable. Make the game unplayable and the enjoyment goes, and so do their players.

Maybe they have learned their lesson, maybe not. We'll see when Lich King comes out. I know there is a PVP zone in there, and I avoid PVP. It is not my style of play which is why I chose a PVE server, but if the quests force me to play PVP in order to complete them, then it may just be enough to push me away from the game I love so much.

As a player who mostly works with a 70 mage outside of the cities, I wasn't to affected by the plauge. But when I did visit the capitals, there was a steady stream of zombies, none of which gave me much trouble besides the plauge itself. But with friends hovering in the late 50s and early 60s, they told me of the pain of being attacked by griefer 70s. This event could have been made much less groaned at if they had kept it to Outlands

I, too, was one of those furious to have been chased off the server and unable to play the game I paid to play.

I was trying to access my lvl 11 Nelf priest's bank in Darnassus... FOR 6 FLIPPIN HOURS!! Never did manage it. All I got was QQ more BS in trade and general. I asked them if when they were planning a vacation in their motor home they paid for I chose to render it nonfunctional denying them what they had a right to expect? Nothing but crickets in response.

It was clearly the griefing that caused most of the ire.

And it could have been avoided.

ALL Quest NPCs, Innkeepers, Auction house persons, trainers etc should be unattackable, even by AoE always. They should also never aggro on anyone. (unless part of the quest line to do it).

And unless you were flagged none of the BS should have affected you not even AoE effects. The UI has the easy way to opt in or opt out.

THAT is how it SHOULD have been done.

If done that way all the non griefers would have had just as much fun but noone would have had the game ruined for them for days on end.

Ah well...

What would have made it ok
# Nov 01 2008 at 1:35 AM Rating: Excellent
I think it would have been OK if:

1. Repair was free, EVEN IF YOU ACCEPT RES outside the city.
2. AH and Flightmasters immune (or maybe green and slightly stunned/laggy)
3. Getting zombified inverted your level, i.e. 70 <==> 1, 10 <==> 60

(This would still have been a problem for 30-40 but maybe there could have been some kind of first aid masks that give immunity, like 5 mins for linen, 1 hour for felcloth -- taught by Argent Dawn of course.)

I can't say I really enjoyed the event at all. I couldn't get anything done and was considering suspending my account for a while. The part that really chapped my @$$ was the fact that it reeked of a marketing ploy by Blizzard to get us to buy WOTLK (like anyone who's been playing for the last month doesn't know the expansion is coming out). Talk about a captive audience to their 'advertisement' for the expansion.

I think a few days of it would have been tolerable, with limits put on what level of character was instantly killed (Level 1 mules, bankers, etc. come to mind), but to go on and on and on and on and on and on ... well, you get the idea.

I can't say I agree that this is the best, well-thought out event in gaming history (or something to that effect)... it just annoyed the living daylights out of me and I stopped playing for a week or so until I heard it had calmed down.

However, it did make me reconsider buying WOTLK. If that's the kind of forced playing I'm going to see, I'm not buying into it.

Yes, I complained too, phoned to suspend my subscription as there was no way to really play the game in an enjoyable way. I've only been playing for a year, and only have 5 chars, most of them under 40 (my highest is 61 Warlock). I found I had to hide / walk or die the whole time. If I tried to be a zombie, I instantly died and had to corpse walk / repair etc.
I gave up in the end :(

Maybe as a lvl 70 healer I would have had a great time, but with under a year's play, I haven't yet become bored of grinding / levelling.

I also have an extra 2 accounts for my kids (12 & 14) and the atmosphere on chat was really unpleasant, enough to put me off letting them play.

As SherylM and Capcanuk said, if we had been able to participate in a meaningful / fun way, things would have been different, but there were no rewards, no achievable tasks, only pain and bullying from higher levels who clearly enjoyed the mayhem and misery :(.

First off, I too was one of those who COMPLAINED about this a LOT. The first few days i did attempt to help. I located healers and directed
those infected to the sites. Second i do have level 70s. But neither was capable of healing. I did try and fight but soon gave up when i noticed
a group of 70s running around enjoying the fact they could infect at will. I have a new member who for a week found it impossible to play.
WOW really thought of a great anti wow program.
I have many friends who chose to sit this out. We play PVE for a reason! If wow was really interested in making the game enjoyable i would suggest a this.
1. If a player must enter pvp vrs normal pve to full fill a quest limit its envolment to that level. Stop letting levels higher than a zone raid at will. If that is what makes the game enjoyable let them go to the apporiate areas , : BGs, Arenas and of course a PVE server!
2. As stated so well by others, give lower players some sort of HAVEN from the fools who,s only goal is to disrupt the game for those who can NOT defend them selves!
This event has taught me two things. One is i am going to re-evaluate my desicion to purchase the new expansion.
Second i will NOT renew my subscription for 6 months as standard. For now one it will be soley month by month. That way should WOW decide the urge to do this again i will not be out any real money.
Again,
I play this game for relaxtion, I go around helping others where i can and spread as much good will about the game as possible to new people.
those who have encounted many of my alts know this. But even i have reached my level of patience with the game and its associated BS.

It's funny how some people don't understand the vast majority of complaints regarding this event.
Yes, playing on a PvE server and being "forced" to PvP was seen, by many, as unpleasant.

However, there is the major issue that this event was obviously aimed at high-level players, and ONLY at high level players.

Low level players who wanted to participate couldn't. They were zombified, then slaughtered. And by low-level, that can mean anyone up to level 40 or so. If my play time had been disrupted by an event in which I could have fully participated, then I would have thought quite differently of it. I would more than likely have enjoyed it.

But you have to place yourself in the virtual shoes of those players, below that level, who found themselves spending the time either dead, or cowering in a corner avoiding zombies and zombification. They pay the same monthly fee as those players for whom this event was clearly geared.

Zombification and zombie attacks should clearly have been level-coded to better reflect the general level of players within various areas. Not an easy task, I know. But surely some accomodation could have been found that would have avoided being beaten down by level 70+ zombies (city guards).

I'm one of those who complained "I play on a PvE server for a reason" - I have very limited time to play after work and it was nearly impossible, as you mentioned in your article, to get out of Stormwind. I have several characters, ranging from level 28 to 70. I had to stop levelling my lower level characters and play my level 70s just so I could stay alive. Eventually, I just started logging on to check mail until the zombie invasion was over.

Had I had more time to play, I may have enjoyed it more. But as it was, it reminded me of playing on PvP servers and getting ganked by level 60s when I was level 10. It made the game so not fun to me I almost quit playing, but decided to give PvE a try. Which is where I've been now for about three years. When I want PvP, I go to battlegrounds.

I have level 70 toons, Paladins, in fact, so, yes, I was able to participate, and I was able to go in and begin cleansing.

However, as I experienced on my bankers, the experience for lower level players was, effectively, to render the game unplayable - not because of the event itself, but by the griefing that occurred.

I have two very strenuous objections to this event:

(1) When zombified, all players should be equal, that is to say, zombify a level 1, they become a level 70 zombie. If we're going to force PvP down the throats of those on PvE servers, let's at least give everyone a fair chance!

(2) The repair costs. The fact that this was a PvP event (forced or not), in **EVERY** single piece of documentation one can read, it is widely accepted that player deaths resulting from PvP action cause no durability loss. The fact that this was forced PvP, yet incurred durability costs (which added up to a tidy sum, I might say), is, in my humble opinion, unacceptable.

Whilst I appreciate getting 3 days free play time, it doesn't go to compensate for the lost time, earning etc. as some of us are still trying to finalise preparations for WotLK in terms of setting aside cash, materials and so forth.
Plague or Treat? Zombie Ganking

I simply chose not to participate. Sure I got "zombified " once and ran into a corner and killed myself. But after that I simply avoided it. Rather easy if you were running Bgs... Wait.. you did know that if you were infected and zoned into a bg or an instance that you lose the infection right? Nothing blizzard has ever thrown at me in this game that I couldnt figure out or beat or avoid if I so chose to.

So you play on a pve server for a reason.. so your game time is limited... so it was easy to avoid the event.. .simply don't be where the kiddies were playing with zombies.
