SOE Begins Restoration of Services

UPDATE, May 14, 7:15p.m. EDT: SOE has slowly begun restoration of their services.

SOE - Restoration Announcement
SOE - Welcome Back Program
SOE - Recent Updates

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

For details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage. See this article for the May 12th news on the "Make Good" program details.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

Game-specific May 11th updates:

EverQuest: Players with an active house will be credited one month of upkeep costs and the inactive period will be extended from 90 to 150 days.

EverQuest II: All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Free Realms: The Free Realms birthday event and the New Member Bonus Bonanza will be extended to give everyone a chance to participate in them. Don’t worry about your farms; they’ll be taken care of too!

Star Wars Galaxies: All Galactic Civil War point decay has been suspended and inactive citizen removal time temporarily increased by 14 days. Item and vendor expiration timers have also been increased by 14 days.

Vanguard: One day for each day lost will be added to every player's Upkeep Bank to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Just suppose you were one of those players that didn't have Facebook, Twitter, or Zam network? Hmmm, how the hell would you know anything that was going on past the 4th of May which was the last statement made on SoE Website. Inquiring minds want to know...as well as those gamers.

There's this cool invention called an internet search engine.

Many different versions out there, free for the using. I'd think that it wouldn't take more than 10 minutes for anyone with the slightest amount of internet savvy to find the necessary info.

Or maybe you'd like to suggest that someone who plays a relatively popular online game has no clue on how to utilize the internet well enough to find what's needed?

Of course, you wouldn't. Then you couldn't take pot shots at SOE.

UPDATE, May 9, 3:55 p.m. EDT: According to Facebook, "SOE services will remain offline today. We continue to work diligently to bring things back as quickly as possible and appreciate your continued patience."

The problem I have is Sony seem to be carrot dangling, the above statement is 'almost' saying the game will be up tomorrow...

It's been something like, 'not today, not till Friday, not this weekend, oh definatly not today' etc etc, clever marketing but damn annoying, surely they have a minimum timeframe they KNOW the servers will be down.

This leads me to think that if they say 'oh the servers will be down for a month' then they think people may start playing another mmo and may like it enough to take them away from eq perhaps?

Anyway its far to late and my suspicious mind needs some sleep.

I'm beginning to think that this is much more serious than originally thought and that Sony doesn't have a clue about what the hackers have actually done. For their site to be down this long, there is only one thing SOE officials are doing, and doing it daily, covering their asses from the first floor to the CEO's office... Just not in that order...

I don't expect to see the servers back for a month yet. Maybe the middle of June in fact.

PSN is coming up to that month right now themselves and they are still down, there is no indication to suggest that the SOE games will be any faster than PSN is.

Actually, I'm pretty sure they figured out by now. Security firms are pretty good at finding those things and make recommendations. It's not matter of whether they could the servers back up. They said they were rebuilding the network which usually takes about 1-2 weeks. And that is with a project with plans that formed well in advance. Since they didn't find the hidden breach until week ago, and even if they try their best to bring up servers, it will take at least this week, possibly next week.

SOE officials and executives do not play EQ. If they did, the servers would have been up last Wednesday. It doesn't bother them. And they cannot relate to what is going through EQ addicts. Also, loss of EQ customers mean they can actually project higher damages and submit higher claims to the insurance companies.

The question for me is why SOE is not even trying to inform the customers. They cannot be this incompetent on customer satisfaction. It is as if they are intentionally putting off its customers. Notifying its customers through Facebook and Tweeter is pathetic and I am sure SOE knows it too. This implies couple of things. Well, it could be that SOE leadership is just plain incompetent. Oh well, I guess I will be closing some rifts tonight.

The Everquest End User License Agreement is a contract, and contract law cannot supercede federal and state codes. For instance, if I wrote in my contract that I had the right to kill and eat another human being or enslave the population of California, it does not mean I really could. Sony call tell us that they can bill us and not offer the Everquest service for months, but there is no way they could get a court to enforce that provision. Also, there is a high likelihood Sony would be found to be committing fraud against its customers.

Contract law just governs relationships in situations where people are primarily carrying out financial transactions or where state and federal codes do not regulate the behavior involved. Even if Sony managed to fail to offer people some sort of compensation for the network downtime, very few people would still be willing to pay for a Sony game or product afterwards. I have level 85 or 85+ plus characters of about every class, and I was part of the endgame for a couple of years. My wizard has around 5k AA's and is getting to where he has decent gear again.

Also, I go back and experience different parts of the game that I missed when I get a chance. I have a character that has every trade skill available in the game maxed out and a fully evolved trophy. My skills may not be the best ever, but I have a general idea of the capabilities of each class and can play them effectively. I could never play Everquest again and would be more than satisfied with what I was able to accomplish in the game.

However, it is beyond silly to try and make the argument that there is no need for Sony to do anything to compensate the player base for what has happened. There is nothing I need in the game, but I also realise that Sony cannot allow the largest computer gaffe in history to pass without at least trying to do something to atone to the player base. Sony has been known to be less-than-attentive to its customers, and in that case, people have to let them know that they cannot take us for granted.

I would not like Sony to ruin the game by giving players items that cause the careful balance to be upset, but it would be nice to get a mask that has illusions for three or four different races on it. That would go a long way towards making many people happy and do absolutely nothing to unbalance the game. Another thing Sony could do is make three or four different masks and hand them out at intervals to make more of an impact and satisfy more people. That way they could give a reward every week or two for a while and look like they were doing more as time went on. I still really enjoy Everquest when I am not working on one of my fiction books or busy with something important in real life, and I would hate to see it go away just because Sony does not want to hand out a few harmless items to make the customer base happy.

Erm, the current situation is not anywhere near "the largest computer gaffe in history".

September 1983: The Soviet early warning system reported five incoming U.S ICBM's due to a software error. At the time tensions between the USSR and the USA were high because they had just got done shooting down KLM 007 and NATO had just started a military exercise that the Soviets were upset about. The only reason the Soviets didn't glass us is the duty officer thought it strange that we would only launch five.

October 1987: Faulty automatic trading programs generated sell orders in the NYSE. As a result of this computer gaffe Wall Street had its worst day in its history. A half a trillion dollars just went poof as if they never existed. Even the U.S. Government can't lose money that fast.

February 1991: A rounding error in the Patriot Missle Systems software cause a one missle battery to NOT track an incoming SCUD missle which hit a barracks. 28 U.S. service members died in that attack and about four times that were injured.

In 1985 and again in 2000 people were killed by radiation treatments for cancer due to software bugs.

This probably wouldn't even make a top 50 list, let alone being the largest. It is only the most recent.

I suspect that mr. trdkm was making a hypothetical comment.

I believe that when the game is up and running again that SoE will be generous. It won't matter about contractual obligations at that time, but more about "doing the right thing" or "earning back customer loyalty."

Realistically, they should be afraid, because they stand to lose a LOT of $14.95's per month over the outage rather than the initial hack. Let us hope that they do not stain their honor by bringing up PSN prior to EverQuest I & II.

Hmmm.... Missing EQ2 as much as anyone else but why should the SOE system take priority?

The PSN network had already been down for two weeks before the SOE network came down. According to the the player data stolen, PSN has 77 million users, SOE only has 24 million.

So, playing devils advocate here, they've already been down for 2 weeks and has 3 times as many users, so why should SOE take priority again?

Mazeron, read the whole post again. I made the point that if Sony leaves the service down for weeks or months, the company will be guilty of fraud if people are charged for the service and then not compensated in a way commensurate with the amount of money that was charged.

This should be obvious, but a post is of little use to anyone if a person takes one sentence out of context and tries to argue the sense of the entire post is in error somehow because of it. I have no problem with what Sony has done so far to try and make things right with the customers, but then the servers are not even back up yet.

What you are quoting is a statement qualified by the word 'if.' This means that one fact is contingent upon another, and in this case, it is simple speculation for the time being. It is also an attempt to explain the user agreement in a way that is more in keeping with the wording and traditional legal interpretation of the wording than other people have so far done. Thank you for the time you took to read my post, good day to you.

read the blasted agreement that you hi accept on every dang time you start the stupid game - unless you are blind in one eye and can't see out of the otherSOE has already stated they will compensate you - with an initial 30 days game time and 1 day of game time for every damn day the stupid game is down.... not to mention the one year indentity theft insuracne that Sony is picking up in the case of the PSN people... deal with it. egg in your beer is not included - you moight also want to understand the terminolgy behind fraud before you bandy it about. With the insurance policy and the game time the only ones here that are losing money is Sony.. you are being compensated for the missed subscription time, the only thing you re losing is access to your addiction

So my guess for tomorrow is SOE services will remain offline today. We will continue to say we are working hard to get them back up without giving you any real info on when that may happen. I was merely coming up with a hypothetical reward to see what people would think of it, and if it would make people angry at this situation happier. I also think it was quite clear that is was just for fun and curiosity sake.

Perhaps, in the future, you can spend more time thinking about what a post is asking rather than coming up with your lame one-liners.

of no Everquest and another day of Sony laid off employees defending Sony with ridiculous arguments.

The length of downtime is significant not because of the attacks of the hackers, but the lack of any type of security at Sony against them. Sony is having to revamp their entire system, which should have been updated YEARS ago.

Yeah, the hackers are a bunch of punks, but Sony is negligent at best. There's enough blame for both of them, but to disregard one is to disregard the facts.

I think it's important to take into account that those of us that play the games are not the only 'customers' of Sony. Consider the companies and people (that work for those companies) that actually make the games we play. These companies and people are being affected by this outage to a MUCH larger degree in my opinion. Take CAPCOM for example. CAPCOM's Corporate Officer and Senior VP Christian Svensson has this to say:

"...as an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget..."

Source

I can't help but think that Sony is doing everything it can to get it services back online, and would be quite surprised if it takes them until the end of the month to get things going again.

But please, for goodness sake, come up with something else to do until your game is back. You can do it!

ToS, Downtime, Compensation...
# May 09 2011 at 12:36 PM Rating: Decent
First off, the ToS arguments that Sony doesn't HAVE to do anything: that's true, but if they didn't, they would see a lot more players walk away then already have.
Second, are they offering things that are more then fair for this downtime? Yes. But you have to realize that each day these games are down, more people get pissed and walk away. Some just want it back online fast so they can feed their addiction, others just wanna feel like they addressed this swiftly and securely so we can watch our identities and credit cards but not have to worry about any future breaches.
Each day it's down more people look at Rift, WoW, and other games, get hooked on those or just say "***** sony" and move on for the hassle.
So you folks whining about tos, ToS, they don't HAVE to: the mechanic doesn't HAVE TO fix your car properly to get some money out of you once, but if he wants you to come back, he better do it fast and do it right. I suspect many folks, like me, are waiting to see what sony does next. I think if we have reasonable downtime for this crisis (up to 2 weeks total) and they do reasonable promo's/thank you's (30 days+ downtime+ maybe a double xp weekend) Most folks will be satisfied. The longer it's down, the more people will walk away, and the bigger the apology promos will have to be, to retain customers. It's a GREAT game but u will still have people walk away, because of the identity hassle, because of the downtime, because/if sony doesn't try something nice that made them feel like we got a sincere apology. And don't say ***** it, leave, we don't need you, because they DO! No money=no game, you chase away/lose customers, you lose money. You do good business, put out a nice product, treat the customers good; they play more, they pay more. Bottom line. And that SOE is the victim crap is bs. Not many people are gonna feel sorry for a mega corporation while constantly looking over their shoulder both ways for identity theives. Who cares who to blame...the hackers...soe's security...the fact is, this incident happened, they gotta get this fixed up so the customer base feels somewhat safer, and we can get back to our "normal" lives. Cuz in the end, more people are gonna worry about the downtime then anything else. We gotta watch our identities ANYWAY if you do ANY sort of online billpay, shopping, subscription gaming and/or services.

Anyway, that's my rant, i'm sticking to it. Hopefully when all is said and done there's enough subscribers left to pick up the pieces and move on stronger then ever. :)
UPDATE 5-9-11

How about a damn update, you Sony peabrains?! Get your $hit together already. I'm a paying customer of 11 years and I'm JUST getting to the point where it's almost too long and I'm losing interest. What you REALLY need to worry about is people like me who are about to stop posting here at all. It's because we don't care anymore... mainly because YOU don't care. That's when you've really dropped the ball.

At this point, you're running out of time.

Ok there are 2 types of folks here. The wish list guys, and the sony over-defenders.

Wish list guys some are ridiculous some are joking ect, I expect we will see some double xp and free game time, not much else tbh I personally love double xp as it allows me to get some alt lovin done :)

To the over-defenders.. Listen guys sony may not HAVE to reward us but the plain and simple fact is they arent the only game in town. I for one do not want to see the EQ pop delcine any more then it has (seemed to have gotten a surge of new/returning players recently) and do think if they want to keep players interested they do need to offer some kind of perk for having all that down time.

I just hope we dont have to wait till next month I can only imagine how bad the pop in EQ will get, PSP isnt a real big deal since those folks are stuck and will coem back anyways lol! But EQ is allmost a living entity it being down too long can severaly damage the game.

True, they are not the only game in town. And guess what, you are free to take your fifteen whole dollars a month and do something else with it. There's the door, exit stage left. Of course you'd have to not only find something else to do with yourself but would also have to find something else to complain about. The only real compensation they would be obligated to give is if someone paid for their subscription that month and never got to utilize it or paid for SC and never got to use that. Do spend that refund all in one place....

The only thing I'm wishing for is an ETA on a resolution and the return of game-play. I could care less about freebies, token gestures. What I would like is some updates on progress so I can know when I'll be able get back to playing my characters.

I enjoy the game, have for years. Otherwise, I would have stopped purchasing expansions and paying for gameplay a long time ago.

I'm a Wish-lister. I WISH they would tell us what the hell is going on!!! The most recent update on SOE sites is May 4th, last thing from Facebook was the 7th and that was no update. Stop leaving us hanging day to day. They dangle Friday in front of us, then don't pull the rug out untill late Saturday, now the weekend is over and still no word on a real estimate, leaving us to twist in the wind. /sigh

i don't see myself in one of these two groups...

I will be happy about any form of compensation they give us. I know that they don't have to do that. But from my experiences with SoE i expect that they will definately give the free month, and i guess that there will be some double everthing-events, maybe some "remember the attack we survived" housingdeko.

SoE has in fact granted me a lot of things i didn't expect to get.
F.E., i found SF activated on my stationacc after i returned from my "what is scott hartsman doing - Rift adventure", had a free charslot and a rentfree house waiting for me on LoN-
whenever i return after testing another game i always found something unexpected to be happy about.
It is also the only game where i experienced guides creating a roleplaying scene out of the blue with a unique quest and quest rewards just for me.

Whatever will be the compensation, i will be happy about it, as i don't see it as their obligation to compensate us.

I take my time to get a close look at everything new on the market, but i feel that i'll be staying with EQ2 no matter what. These downtimes are some patience-training, but no reason for leaving. We are playing a really great game , and i trust SoE to be working intensiv to get everything save and running again.
I just hope that i didn't lose that charslot and that house i got in LoN >.<

I think that you are wrong with trying to put people into groups sir....Hundreds of individuals have posted here and if they were asked individually about which of the 2 groups that you have defined they fall in, I think that most would reply neither...I, speaking as an individual, can say this: "I have no love for Sony: I do not want anything extra from Sony: I just want EQ to come back stronger and more secure.

But there actually are two groups of people in this thread.

Those that openly catagorize people, and those that don't.

There are 11 types of people.

00 = no
01 = yes
10 = maybe
11 = undefined

(Really bad binary joke)

Bad binary jokes aside, it will eventually be a binary situation. It always devolves to that. It always winds up as 'Us vs. Them'.

The first step in the process is to define the sides and in the process of doing that, purge the hertics from the ranks of the rightous. It is a little early in the process but it appears that the two sides will devolve into:

1. The hackers are good and Sony is bad. The hackers should be treated as heros and Sony and thier supporters need to be dragged out into the street and have a bullet put into the back of their heads.

2. Sony is good and the hackers are bad. Sony is a victim like us and should be treated as such. The hackers and thier supporters need to be dragged out into the street and have a bullet put into the back of their heads.

Initially there will be two additional groups. Rational Thinkers and Peace Makers. The Rational Thinkers, for various reasons, will refuse to join one side or another.

As the battle lines become more clearly defined and as each sides' Holy Inquisition becomes more effective in rooting out the heritics, the Rational Thinkers will become more and more quiet. Eventually, they will see the handwriting on the wall and quietly beat feet out of the AO.

This leaves just the Peace Makers trying to keep order between two groups of rabid fanatics. Eventually, both sides will turn on the Peace Makers and tack them up on crosses. This is the ultimate fate of the Peace Makers. It always has been and it always will be.

Free from distractions (the Heritics with their impure thoughts, the Peace Makers with their constant 'Can't we all just be friends' chant, the Rational Thinkers with their ability to see beyond slogans) the two sides are now free to shred each other in a war that neither can win.

The last thing that happens is the Rational Thinkers, will look down on the carnage and say, "Well, those chowder heads made a proper mess of this valley. It will never be the same again. Time to move on, I guess."
