SOE Begins Restoration of Services

UPDATE, May 14, 7:15p.m. EDT: SOE has slowly begun restoration of their services.

SOE - Restoration Announcement
SOE - Welcome Back Program
SOE - Recent Updates

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

For details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage. See this article for the May 12th news on the "Make Good" program details.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

Game-specific May 11th updates:

EverQuest: Players with an active house will be credited one month of upkeep costs and the inactive period will be extended from 90 to 150 days.

EverQuest II: All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Free Realms: The Free Realms birthday event and the New Member Bonus Bonanza will be extended to give everyone a chance to participate in them. Don’t worry about your farms; they’ll be taken care of too!

Star Wars Galaxies: All Galactic Civil War point decay has been suspended and inactive citizen removal time temporarily increased by 14 days. Item and vendor expiration timers have also been increased by 14 days.

Vanguard: One day for each day lost will be added to every player's Upkeep Bank to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

I would have hoped that by now we would have received a more substantive update than our daily 11:00 PM no-service-today messages. I realize this is a bad situation and I am cognizant of the fact that they are working as fast as is possible given the circumstances, but I find it hard to believe that there is nothing they can safely tell us about their progress at this point. Obviously telling us more about what's going on won't speed up the process but it would go a long way towards mollifying customers who resent being completely in the dark.

We're being deceived, Yun. One moment is "We're taking this day by day, we don't know when we'll be back up other than very soon. It's not today." Then last friday: "We're working diligently around the clock. But we won't be up this weekend." So, SOE, which one is it? If you don't know when, but it won't be this weekend, then you know when it's NOT, just be straight about it. If it's going to be 31 May, then just say it. Wish they'd give we users some credit and not assume we need to be spoon fed whatever they're feeding. It's better than "Nope, not today" near the end of the day.

They say they are working "around the clock." I truly hope this is true, because I am afraid that the longer they are down, the more long time customers they will lose. Having played EQ since 2000, even I am growing impatient regardless of how I try to understand the situation. This fiasco may be the boost that Rift needs to truly get going.

I fully agree. Facebook are scum and I too boycott the site. I get my updates from Twitter. Yes, the link goes to Facebook, but there's enough information there to let you know you're going to be waiting another day. If you have a mobile phone and a twitter account, you can select @everquest posts to be sent as SMS messages to your mobile so you'll be instantly notified if they post something. It seems that they've been posting about 22:00 GMT or so, so be warned if you do turn it on, the incoming text may wake you.

I think that For every week that SOE is down that they should extend the events that normally occur example city festivalsmoonlights etc etc to be carried on one more week. Been down two so next month it would be 3 weeks. That s how I make my coin. and where evert he festival is at that they should offer the items for the previous festival(s).

This is ************ instead of getting up and playing the game I have to find something else to do, when there is nothing to do. SO SOE get it in gear or you will start losing your GAMERS left and right!!!! And then make it worth while when we do come back!

I just wish for more updates on the situation from Sony. Like it is now, i wake up in the morning (berlin time) ,take a look @ station, then i check Zam. and i keep checking every few hours til bedtime. in the last few days, i was already happy if Zam posted something Sony said on facebook.
I just don't understand, it can't be that hard to release these infos (like server will remain down today) on the recent updates page?
I am boycotting facebook, facebook is really not the one to get my data.
It feels a bit like Sony wants me to sign to facebook if i want to get updates... :<

No politics or bashing, just the truth. I really enjoy FPS when I am stressed out and there is no EQ to let it out with. As for politics and bashing, there is always plenty of that to go around. Information is better than ignorance even when it is not what we want to hear, I am quite a fan of the game and have not knocked anyone but the hackers, their childish and criminal behavior is all that I would have attacked. For them I have pity as they can only damage the innocent in a crude attack to get even with SONY, and as KARMA goes so shall it come. So I play NecroVisioN for now and will wait to see how this all shakes out. However as in all things, including elections the majority get served first and in this case the SOE players are the minority. So if my post was taken as an attack I defend it as a bit of news that I had not seen and thought to share with my fellow gamers. Enjoy and I hope my assumptions are totally wrong, I really do like to be proven wrong at times like these.

When you have a serious breach in security like Sony had, there are far too many issues to resolve. It's not like your rebuilding a crashed HDD array. Throw into the mix the FBI and the Justice Department, and we aren't talking about a walk in the park...oh, and being subpoenaed by the New York Attorney General.
With that being said, you have to take any report with a grain of salt, because the reporters and/or those giving their 'understanding' of the current situation are also not the de facto on accuracy. Think of it as the cashier or salesman trying to explain in fine detail what the repairman is doing to fix your car. But unlike a car, there are so many variables and a massive amount of testing before going live. The reason we aren’t getting the explicit detail of the progress or situation is primarily due to sensitivity of the situation and that 99.5% of the game playing population wouldn’t know what the **** they were talking about anyways. They just hear blah blah blah servers won’t be up blah blah blah. And they can’t give an accurate timeframe because when they miss it (which is common in situations like this), it will send the feeble minded junkies soaring over the edge.

    http://blog.games.com/2011/05/09/sony-psn-soe-games-third-attack/

Update: Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold told VentureBeat that the news circulating that PSN and SOE might not return until May 31 is falsely informed. He said that such reports stem from an inaccurate Bloomberg report posted over the weekend. "There is no accuracy to that report," Seybold told VentureBeat. "We're focused on ensuring the security of the network before bringing the services back online." Etc. etc. etc...

Could it honestly get worse? According to a 10-year-old Sony-affiliated sweepstakes website found and exploited by hackers on May 7, yes, it just might, Reuters reports.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/07/sony-idUSL3E7G701T20110507

UPDATE 2-Sony removes data posted by hackers,
TOKYO, May 7 (Reuters) - Sony said on Saturday it had removed from the Internet the names and partial addresses of 2,500 sweepstakes contestants that had been stolen by hackers and posted on a website, and said it did not know when it could restart its PlayStation video games network.
Third time is a charm???

There are also reports they will be hacked again this weekend.

Hackers have the upper hand because they already compromised sony's systems they have a laundry list of weaknesses throughout Sony’s kingdom and will use the exploits, either inherent or created, to just roll down that list of targets. In addition to Sony and crew fixing the current existing security flaws in order to get things up and running with PS and SOE for its player base, they have to scour and I do mean scour everything under their kingdom and that is going to suck.

This isn’t going to be pretty.

The lack of communication by SOE on these matters is ridiculous. To me, its very unprofessional. I mean, we are having to rely on posts by someone on Facebook on the matter? Really?.....REALLY?

Why hasnt Smedley or someone stepped up to the plate yet and given us a state of the address message of some sort?

Im sick and tired of seeing these "Soon*TM*" messages from Facebook. How about a message from someone higher up for a change telling us what is going on and perhaps even give us a time frame on the matter?

A game that we have been loyal to and spent a lot of time and money on and spent years playing is being semi-ignored it seems like.

I mean, lets face it, EQ/SOE already had a black eye prior to this and a bad reputation in general within many circles. This is gonna further damage their reputation and the higher ups not giving their last remaining loyal customers any clear cut answers is disheartening to say the least. Instead, we are relying on some nitwit from Facebook to give us "Soon*TM*" automated types of answers.

I appreciate the game and everything they try to do to make it better, but one thing that is missing is making it better for players who do not get to play everyday. I pay the same subscription price as everybody else, but if work calls and I am not able to log on, sometimes weeks at a time, I am suppose to just take it. Extra experience is always nice, but if they have a double experience weekend and I miss it, what good does it do me. So, if you want to do something that would help players like myself, instead of giving us the shaft again, make it something that we can use on our own time, not Sony time.

The target date for all SOE games is May 31. This is from the "Bloomberg Report", and I'm sure they're avid gamers.

On another note, I figure if the hackers can hit governments (and they have), Sony was a relatively easy target. I'm glad that SOE is taking drastic action (I hope)and I'll be there when they get back...I hope.

A game on the uptick could withstand May 31. A game in slow decline would really get hit hard.

I suspect these games are like gym memberships: You don't make money on your heaviest-use segment. You make money on vast numbers of more casual gamers. Those are the guys who'll probably wane with a month of outage.

I've had two accounts since 1999.

I was incredibly upset at the hackers and felt bad for Sony a week ago.

I am losing patience. On week one you blame the hackers, on week two you begin to wonder if these SOE guys know what they are doing.

It's not like I'd leave, but I don't want to see the player base on EQ erode any further.

EQ should steal a few ideas from Rift. I do like being able to go "Rifting" when the exp grind gets slow.

Same here. My partner and I have been long time EQ players off and on for years. We recently came back and have 8 accounts between the two of us. We're very disappointed in Sony due to the lack of communication. I'm not quite sure how it is that Sony can communicate with news venues and business publications while they can't seem to be bothered to speak to their customers.

Sooo .. my partner and I have been Rifting as well. While disappointed we haven't been able to complete Underfoot and HoT, we're having a grand time Rifting. I just saw on the Rift splash screen that they've activated a Ascend your Friend campaign with free trials. Smart move.

On further reflection...

Considering Anonymous has adopted that particular style of Guy Fawkes mask as one of their icons, clown mask might be appropriate. Although it may be a little too polite.

On that subject since Anonymous wants to be associated with Guy Fawkes, perhaps its members should be used as a suitable replacement for the Guy this upcoming November.

I fully expect to have the identity theft insurance provided by SOE for 2 years. I think that's a given if they want to avoid countless legitimate law suits. And go ahead and give everyone the 2 months of free subscription, fine. End it there.

Let everyone spend time building their characters and earning gear like everyone else. It's part of the damn game! Who cares if you have fallen behind... so has everyone else, so you're on equal turf.

SOE LISTEN... WE DO NOT WANT FREE IN-GAME STUFF!!!

Just get EverQuest 2 back up and the great majority of us will be satiated. Oh yeah, EQ1 and PSN too (just to be fair) =P

On a more positive note, I hope the devs have taken the downtime opportunity to work on bugs in the game, while the code nerds are busy tracing the hack.

I know things could be worse, but i really miss SWG. The lack of info from SOE about when we can expect the servers to be up again isn't helping matters much either.

I'm sure we will be compensated with in-game rewards (Free TCG Choose a Loot Cards would be great!) and the free time is nice. I had just gotten settled on a new server and was really enjoying the game again when this happened so its a little annoying that some punks went and screwed it up for everyone.

I'm not going to quit, but i hope they get this sorted and back online soon. I have been keeping busy with Lego Star Wars Saga and today i picked up Oblivion and Fallout 3 Game of the year editions. I already had both games but didn't have any of the addons so it should keep me busy for awhile at least.

I'm not mad at SOE, i just miss my game and wish they would keep us a little better informed on the progress.

i don't know if an outside link will post, google Sony’s PlayStation, Qriocity Services Remain Shut, ‘Uncertain’ on Restart, and click the Bloomberg link, should be first thing on google results.

Sony Corp. (6758)’s PlayStation Network and Qriocity online services remain shut as of today, Shigenori Yoshida, a Tokyo-based spokesman said. Sony is uncertain when it can resume the services, Yoshida said by phone today.

The company is in the process of adopting an improved security system and its plan to restart the services fully by May 31 is unchanged, he said. Sony shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services April 20 because of possible data theft by hackers.

The maker of PS consoles had planned to restart partial operations within a week after boosting the level of security system, the company said May 1.

Has anyone considered the reason why there is a lack of a firm resumption of services or an update to SOE's own website is because SOE does not want to provide a stationary target for the hackers to hit again?

First, updates on Facebook. For the hackers to disrupt this attempt by SOE to disseminate information would require them to take on another online community. Feasibly, one that owns a more imposing deterrent to hack. Or, if the hackers would take down the sole SOE account, it would be easy for SOE to create another.

Second, lack of a firm ETA on server up time. Why in the world would you give your adversaries a written invitation as to when best to hit you again to continue to create more havoc? SOE is at least giving weekday updates to let its customers know that each day they won't be back.

Just like there is nothing that says they have to compensate their users in anyway, nor do they have to inform us of when services will resume. They do it to be helpful, not because they have to.

Bottom line people, assume the worst, hope for the best. Assume that SOE will be gone for at least a month, and very possibly longer. And hope that that is not the case. That's all that we, the paying public, can do at this time. Rage posts, demand posts and quit posts will not budge SOE into bringing services online one second sooner than they are willing to do so. All the raging and ranting is accomplishing is shooting your blood pressure into hypertension levels.

I don't consider it a daily update when they tell us at 4pm that the servers will be down for the day that has already passed. That's more of a point after the fact. Telling us NOW (Monday evening) that the servers will be down again tomorrow (or for fugs sake UP)... now THAT would be a damn update.

What SOE is doing now, is more like this:

UPDATE ON NATIONAL SECURITY... "Osama Bin Laden will NOT be hosting American Idol this past season."

It's just useless information about the obvious =\

I see the update at 4 pm meaning that they will be down until the next update. 4 pm is roughly the quitting time for EST, give or take an hour, and a majority of the working class wouldn't have the option to play earlier than that. A 4pm announcement offers the daytime workforce the knowledge that SOE will be down for their evening free time.

Will this best serve everyone? No, it won't. But it will serve the greatest number of people, those who hold down a typical day job.

My personal take on the updates is such: At 4 pm today, when they say it's down for "today," I accept that servers will simply not be up any sooner than the next update.

And guess what happens? My expectation is met when the same canned response is release the next day at 4 pm. OR, I'm pleasantly surprised when I check in randomly later that day to make sure the status quo is the same and find the servers are up and running.

Agreed. Though my point is that it's poor cutomer service to do it that way. Less than 10% of their customer base is in their time zone (EST), so giving people (anxious people keep in mind) an update for the coming day would be much more satisfying in my opinion.

What they are doing is weak! Plain and simple.

Server Security for Dummies.

Short version:
Don't believe everything you read on the internet, no matter how much you want to believe it.

Not so short version:
Some experts are saying Sony was using an older version for some of it's software. Other experts are saying Sony was using the latests non-beta versions.

One of these experts, submitted a written testimony to Congress and testified in person. His written testimony stated that various news organizations reported that Sony was using outdated software. His oral statement said that Sony was using outdated software. These different versions from the same individual, while similar in content, are different in one essential way. The written testimony implied (did not specifically state) that the information was second hand knowledge. The oral testimony implied (again, did not specifically state) that the information was first hand knowledge. The difference between the two versions of testimony was the inclusion of 'various news organizations reported that...'

We are getting conflicting information.

Now, you can decide for yourself whom you want to believe. I personally and going to treat this like global warming and not believe anyone is telling the truth. Not SOE, not Anonymous and certainly not those lying weasles in Congress.

Author did search on Apache web servers on PSN network and found that those software were up to date. This was a "Common knowledge". What he neglected to mention is that some of SOE's main web game servers (MMO game servers, EQ, EQ2, etc) and its acillary servers were not up to date. Which is kinda funny because supposedly , DOS attacks were against patched up Apache servers and not against outdated SOE Online game servers. Also the point is that it doesn't really matter which version it was running. If hackers want to get in they will find a way to get in. DOS attacks are child's play and are meant to hurt the companies' visibility. Hacking in and getting information is totally separate and criminal offense. The thing is our law is too "lax". Previous hackers are out of minimum security jail after serving onl 3-5 years with probation. And they can get a job at security firms or work as consultants. Law should be at least 10 years for each offense without parole. SOE could not have prevented this hacking. SOE was just too stupid to go after hackers publically in the first place.
