SOE Answers Questions About Melee Changes

Just in time for tomorrow's patch, Alan VanCouvering answered some questions for us about the upcoming melee changes: Q: There will be some form of UI limitation on the number of available abilities. Are disciplines going to be included in this limitation? A: There will be no UI restriction for the new skills. Each of them can be made into a Hotbutton and used from there, as well as from the new window. The same is true for disciplines. Q: Given an Empty endurance bar, for a level 65 warrior, with no endurance buffs, how long would it take him to regenerate it to full? Level 20? Level 50? A: We're still working on tuning that particular piece of the puzzle, so I can't give you any sort of accurate answer. But I can say that you won't have to sit down to regain endurance faster then standing up, so you don't have to worry about having to med. Q: Which classes will be receiving endurance buffs, and by what percent are you aiming to have +endurance buffs effect regeneration? A: We are still working out the details about who will get what endurance buff spells. Right now we do not plan to create any spells that regenerate endurance. Q: When you get ressed are you planning for peoples endurance bar to go to zero, much like Mana is today? A: We have been toying with various levels for endurance to be restored after a resurrection. At this point we're thinking of setting it something near 25 to 50%, to allow some use of disciplines and skills upon resurrection, but not unrestricted usage. Q: Most of the released data I've seen regarding the changes are going to be events or skills or whatever to occur during the course of the fight. The real warrior problem is in the initial pull where they can't establish initial aggro the way a Knight can. Will anything be done in the new system to address this concern? A: Several of the new skills allow each of the melee classes ways to control aggro. Warriors should see an improvement in their ability to gain "snap aggro", as it's often called, that is not tied to an opening. Q: Presumably, the different disciplines will drain different amounts off of your Endurance bar. Combined with the lack of a timer, will this result in, say, a high level Warrior being able to /disc offensive, and then /disc evasive immediately after? A: Yes, if a warrior has enough endurance in his pool, he may very well be able to use two unlinked disciplines in a row. We've generally linked them into different categories of similar abilities. For example, you won't be able to use Evasive and Defensive back to back, as they'll share the same reuse timer. But you may be able to use a more offensive discipline such as Mightystrike. Q: How frequently can we expect to see openings? Are they being put on a timer? Are they randomly generated, like procs? Will there be a way to "force" them? A: That's another thing that we're tuning. But the goal would be to have a few appear during each fight in and experience group situation. Obviously more during a boss fight, because they last a lot longer. There is no "timer" for openings. They are essentially random, and there is currently no way to force an opening. Q: How long will the opening window last? The two-second-ish window on test right now is a bit staunch. 6-8 seems right, but I don't play a "pure" melee. A: We've been increasing the time that an opening is available. We want it to be long enough that you don't have to "twitch" to take advantage of the opening, but not so long that waiting to activate a skill becomes a strategy. Q: Will the UI be customizable in a way that players don't have to stare at a button for half an hour to catch one opening? As it stands, the openings are very easy to miss. A: Our UI is fully customizable. But you will have to pay attention to use openings. There is an indicator in the window as well as a chat message, so they shouldn't be hard to notice. We're planning on making additions to the UI that make it easier to tell when you have an opening. We're certain that players will come up with their own methods to change the UI to their own tastes, but we'd like the default to effective as well.

who gets what
# Jan 14 2004 at 1:16 AM Rating: Default
i won't pretend to be as knowledgable as some of you obviously are in EQ, and certainly not in the ways of the melee arts. But.. it seems to me SKs did get a bit screwed. If someone could tell me if i'm right/wrong without flaming that'd be sweet.
I only have a lvl 52 chanter a lvl 28 sk and a lvl 10 monk, haven't been playing for more than a few months so, i'm very much mroe aware of casters than melee.. but it just seems that a pally, being mostly tank with a bit of healer and a SK, being mostly tank, bit of necro should be basically equal in terms of what discs they get. Yet SK doesn't get one untill lvl 51, pally gets some at lvl 30. How can this be? a pally can heal and buff himself while an SK can barely lifedrain 1% health (at the lvl they GET the spell, nevermind 5 lvls after it) and cast a few (very short)buffs like vamperic embrace and siphon str.. how is this supposed to be balanced?
Content Level???
# Jan 06 2004 at 8:25 PM Rating: Default
I think the patch did a lot of good things (I actually SAW the amount that the warrior was healing for with the healing disc, though it probably still needs to be more), but the content for a patch so anticipated should have been higher. They added in a very small amount of changes compared to what they were promising and gave no indication beforehand that the system would not be entirely implemented with this patch. Where are the windows of opportunity? Where is the added level of strategy? This was supposed to change ALL forms of melee, not just the pure melee. Hybrids recieved NO new content whatsoever. The only thing that was added was the ability to do two unrelated disciplines consecutively, which is useless. Discs have fairly long recovery times, so they are used VERY situationally. Rangers and beastlords are very unlikely tanks, so I doubt that weaponshield and the beastlord equivalent will see much use. If they ARE used, the user will have to be maintaining a high level of aggro. After they're over, the user better have something like a TL waiting, or else... If somehow he or she DID manage to dodge the aggro gained while tanking, the last thing to do would be kick in an offensive discipline, because that would gain more aggro, once again proving my point.

Good job on the warriors, now work on the hybrids. I don't know that beastlords need much, but archery is highly situational, and it's pretty sad when playing a level 62 ranger to take a heavy beating from something in Acrylia Caverns, even with high-end equipment (hehe personal experience there). If SOE wants rangers to be focused on melee rather than archery like it claims, then make them capable of doing it.
Pure Warriors
# Jan 05 2004 at 11:48 AM Rating: Decent
Warriors finally get a much needed tweak. Warriors should rock at their job, which is dishing out the pain toe to toe. If you can't cast spells then your melee skills are all you have. If you are a fighter hybrid (i.e. get spells), then your toe to toe melee abilities should suffer. A fighter hybrid should have to resort to spell casting to best a pure warrior, else get his **** kicked. Warriors have to struggle through this game as it is. The caster classes are soloing reds or quad-kitting reds. As a warrior, I can't solo anything tougher than a dark blue, or used to, now I can solo a yellow perhaps. Thanks SOE.

Honestly i think this is a load of crap, the pairof Knight classes who were finally decent tanks haven't really been changed, but warriors and the other classes this really affects have upped their own desirability by a lot.
This doesn't help Paladin or Sk's at all, because of those timers, our disciplines still take the same amount to referesh, do the same thing........basically Knights got kicked in the pants, and warriors are now are melee superior in every way. They cause more damage, they have more hps and ac, blah blah blah. I could go on forever, I'm not an MT anymore, im barely a secondary tank now, with a Taunt skill of 200 and now problems holding aggro, Ive got 2 words........Thanks SOE
where is the list of the new abilities
# Jan 02 2004 at 1:26 PM Rating: Default
Sorry all but this is a lame question. I am wondering were in blazes all the new abilties are listed at for the Monk,War,and Rogue. I know that going to East Commons Tunnel probably could find out that way. Instead of buying the useless ones and using it to see what it does type thing. Since this is a place of information were can one get all the info.
agro
# Dec 31 2003 at 11:33 AM Rating: Excellent
Since we have a regular party of 5 that hunts together, and our tank has always been a SK, I find it unfair to classes like him and just about crippling that SOE has made it so hard for him to hold agro...They need to put something back in as there are many instances like ours where there simply is no warrior...And in those cases, the SK or Pally should be able to get and keep agro as well as a warrior...Just my humble opinion...
RE: agro
# Jan 11 2004 at 12:44 PM Rating: Decent
RE: agro Same opinion here, I play a shadowknight and just got screwed. Our agro spells, our agro buffs, our spells do almost nothing to take agro from a warrior (or anything else for that matter). I have 180 taunt and use beg+disarm with it.

Discs
# Dec 25 2003 at 8:55 AM Rating: Good
I have a 65 war 65 sham and 65 sk. I have always found that my 65 sk can outtaunt my war anyday of the week. I did not make my SK to be my main tank. I made my sk so that I could add a new element to the group scenerio. I found that with the new discs I can actually use my war to do what he has been meant to do, Tank pure tank. I believe that this actually balances out the classes so that the pure melee have more desirable qualities that they have been lacking for a while aka, better defensive and better taunt abilities. My SK even after the changes still has no problems finding groups, and my war can get groups easier, I see no true negative aspects to the new system other than the fact that there are always people that want to be the best with spells AND melee. The lowest Damage output class is the warrior, the most unable to solo class is the warrior, so in all reality, my 65 sk has no reason to complain and wont, its happy cause even with the changes in a pure fight, can still womp my warriors butt, but my war can finally do his job without having to worry bout terror of terris taking aggro, or a pally stun taking aggro with little or no effort. So Overall this seems to be a good thing. Time will tell tho but at the moment, its not that bad.

Post melee update
# Dec 24 2003 at 1:58 AM Rating: Decent
From what ive seen with my level 55 warrior after the initial melee update there have been several new discs added, a few for "snap agro" these discs have a durration that helps you keep agro as long as its active and the mightystrike ability has been changed from 10 second durration to 30 second durration and the reuse time has been reduced to 25 minutes. The Reuse times for other abilities have been reduced as well the and the higher your level the lower the reuse times go. as far as Warriors becoming better than palladins and shadow nights i havn't found that true at all they are still very useful in groups and its not like every group has only one melee anyway there are usually 2-3 melee in a group.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 24 2003 at 1:47 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i wish that the pallies and sk's would simply stf up. a warrior should be the true front line fighter of any group with pallies and sk's and rangers taking up in second row. after all what can a warrior solo, hmmmm nothing with out hours of waiting. if figures soe finally does something for the warrior after about 5 yrs of stuff they have given to all classes that can cast spells, u go soe its about time u pulled your head outta your **** and did something for the warrior.

Im just comming back to Eq after taking about a month off, could anyone eplain these discipline tomes to me. i have a 58 ranger do i have to get those tomes to relearn the discs that i already had? if so are the new versions of those discs any better. also does anyone know if they plan on replacing the spells that will now be useless with new ones?
I like this
# Dec 23 2003 at 12:41 PM Rating: Default
Well i for one i'm glad the true melee's got this, and if i read this right only Warriors,Monks,Rogues get to use this, but all classes can take advantage of the openings that they cause. As a pally im all for being the MT but come on are role as i thought was crowd control not having the mob hit us all the time. most of us have seen this happen to many time's... OOM from are healers... that's where we can step in and help out some (not all) how the heck can we pally's do that when 1-3 mobs are betting the snot out of us.
Question about Disc
# Dec 22 2003 at 4:49 PM Rating: Decent
I noticed that since the patch I got 2 new disc books at EC, rather the same disc I always had, anyways...do Paladins get the same disciplines they had?

I found the book for resistance and fearless, but where is Holyforge and Santification?

Go to EC,

Elin Lightblade near the Wayfare camp has all the Palasin Tomes
#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 20 2003 at 7:05 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Well, what can I say... They have begun to nerf the pally... A pally will ALWAYS have less HP then a Warrior. Don't get me wrong, this is a good thing, for warrior are to be the Main tank. However, there should be a "draw back" to this "snap agro" (as it was called) to the Warrior. They simply shouldn't get it, because once they get the agro they will live fine with no worry. However, the Pally should remain with this "snap agro" because of their lower HP to counter-Balance the Warrior vs. Pally fight.

The use of the TAUNT button has always had a chance to fail in the past.. The only thing that has changed is now you know about it.

I like the new message that tells me when it fails...heres a good example of when it is a good thing to know your taunt has failed....

In a group or raid situation.. after an enchy mezzes an add in camp and the group/raid finally kills the first target..the tank will then taunt the mezzed add untill the taunt attempt has not failed... then just hit the mob and break mezz and the tank will have agro.

It is a great tool to now know you have agro over the enchy... good for the enchy anyway : )

hmm....so now zing does what?

Nothing. The Stamina bar has gone bye-bye. I'm guessing those spells will too.
RE: Zing
# Jan 11 2004 at 12:50 PM Rating: Decent
I believe that zing is now a vision buff on the spell, now has a 255 cleric and some others requirement. Some of the clickys have been changed to either heals or whatnot.
Where?

the tome merchants are in the library, main floor and one above, one below i know the rogue one is a gnome with the last name "blackblade, or Darkblade" something like that, the ones in EK are in the north eastern corner round some tents.

for my warrior i hope these changes result in the warrior being able to maintain the agro. my 57 warrior has some of the best gear for his level and still has trouble maintaining agro which is the main job of a warrior as i see it. as far as best AC and HP we should remember warriors have no spell abilities unless thier equipment has it.
#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 21 2003 at 2:22 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) and i bet your warrior is a barb, so common, so sucky.

Garbage patch
# Dec 18 2003 at 6:54 PM Rating: Default
Another bug filled, zero quality control SoE release. Unless you are a 65 war/rog/monk the new melee changes are fundamentally useless. Many of the new skills dont work at all - and oh yea, taunt will now fail and give you a fail message. Probably was failing all along and we just didnt get an indication of it.

the needed more than 2 extra days to release this pile o crap. Expecting a couple weeks of patching at this point, having tested on a 54 war 52 monk 63 bard and 18 rogue.
RE: Garbage patch
# Dec 19 2003 at 2:15 PM Rating: Decent
The release on the 18th is just the first part of the melee changes (which was changing the stamina bar into an endurance bar) and making the disciplines run off of endurance. Give them a chance to finish the melee changes. As far as the taunt message, haven’t you ever seen the message "I'll teach you to interfere with me %T" that's the message that happens when taunt worked in the past, you just had to remember that taunt didn't work too well on mobs higher level than you. The rest of the melee skills on the test server aren't released on the live one yet cause they're still working on a few of them and decided to wait ‘til they're all worked out. Personally, if the melee skills are messed up, or you think they are, go play on the test server and use feedback about what's wrong!
sta
# Dec 18 2003 at 4:32 PM Rating: Decent
Im pretty sure sta effects your Endurance. I played my warrior who has 180ish sta and i noticed when I jump I barely lost any STA. I then played my shaman who has like 80 sta and when he jumped it took quite abit more sta. I might have just been the level difference (shaman is 10, warrior 55) but it would make sense that STA would effect your endurance.

#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 18 2003 at 1:16 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) jeez how many expansions do u need i don't have 30 buck to blow every tiem eq comes out with a new money maker why can't they just let u download them for free if u feel like it were already paying to play isn't that enough
