Gamescom may have come to an end, but the summer convention season isn't over just yet! PAX Prime will be held in downtown Seattle from August 26-28 and we'll have members of the ZAM team on the floor, including Director of Content Cody "Micajah" Bye. He'd love to give out PAX swag to some lucky readers, and all he wants in return is more followers on Twitter!
We'll be giving away PAX gear to people who follow @ZAMOfficial and @CodyBye on Twitter. The more followers the pages get before PAX, the more chances you'll have to win prizes. It seems like around every corner there's a DotA-inspired game just waiting to happen, but the latest DotA-related announcement may have come as a surprise to some people. Hi-Rez Studios, the creators of the third-person shooter Global Agenda and developers of the next Tribes game, have thrown their hat into the DotA ring with the announcement of SMITE.
Of course, It simply wouldn't be Hi-Rez if they didn't bring something new to the table, and so they've promised a new take on the DotA concept, most notably being the addition of third-person action with a mythical gods motif. Of course, with such an announcement coming out of nowhere, we decided to catch up with Hi-Rez Studios COO Todd Harris to find out more about SMITE and what it means for the rest of the Hi-Rez family.
Hi-Rez Studios is certainly keeping busy. Global Agenda just went free-to-play, and the company is currently developing Tribes: Ascend and Tribes Universe. Well, it looks like you can now add a DotA-inspired battleground game called SMITE to Hi-Rez's list of upcoming titles.
The company announced today that it is currently developing SMITE, a free-to-play online battleground between the gods that features a third-person camera view and action combat. According to the press release, "players choose from a selection of mythical gods, join session-based arena combat, and use custom powers and team tactics against other player-controlled gods and non-player controlled minions."
Here's some additional information on the game from Hi-Rez Studios COO Todd Harris:
“As a studio and as gamers, we love competitive multi-player games that reward teamwork and strategy. With SMITE, we draw inspiration from DoTA-style RTS titles, but leverage the Unreal 3 Engine to introduce original action oriented combat mechanics, great graphics, and a mythology-themed setting. These session-based games depend upon balanced class design, sophisticated stat-tracking, and matchmaking functionality. These are features we understand well from Global Agenda and our studio is excited to progress team-oriented PvP in new and original directions with SMITE. At this point we already have a really fun playable version of SMITE and we look forward to sharing additional details about the project in the coming months.”
Keep an eye on SMITE's official site and Facebook page for more details as they're released.
