DC Universe Online Rolls Out MegaServers

Today marks the launch of DC Universe Online's MegaServers system. Once a week's worth of maintenance is complete, all of the game's servers will be combined into four worldwide MegaServers: US PC, US PS3, EU PC and EU PS3. The purpose of this move is to boost the populations of the servers so players can more easily find parties for Alerts, Duos, Raids, and Legends PvP.

The new servers will be arranged in phases. Think of them as a combination of all of the shared world areas of the game, such as Metropolis and Gotham. If you're in a different phase than a friend, you'll simply be able to jump to their phase. The MegaServer will always have at least one PvP phase and one PvE phase, and you'll be able to switch between PvE and PvP using the phase shifters in the Hall of Doom and JLA Watchtower. Every player on the MegaServer, regardless of phase or whether they're playing PvE or PvP, will be able to join you in all of the queued Alerts, Raids, Duos, and Arenas.

Of course, there will be conflicts regarding characters and League names. If you need to change your name, you'll receive a free Name Change Token in your in-game e-mail. If you have any problems, contact SOE Customer Support.

Expect a lot of downtime this week during the MegaServer switch. Each region and platform will be down for 10-14 hours for maintenance on specific days. Here's the schedule, which is subject to change:

  • EU PC    8/8/2011              8:00AM PT/4:00PM CET
  • US PC    8/10/2011            8:00AM PT/4:00PM CET
  • US PS3  8/11/2011            8:00AM PT/4:00PM CET
  • EU PS3  8/15/2011            8:00AM PT/4:00PM CET

Bring Your Hero to Life in the DCUO Legends Comic

Back in January, we had the opportunity to speak with comic book legend Jim Lee about the launch of DC Universe Online. As the co-publisher of DC Comics and executive creative director for the MMO, he hinted at the time that he would love to give lucky players the chance to have their in-game characters featured in the pages of the DC Universe Online Legends comic. Seven months later, it looks like that plan has become a reality.

Sony Online Entertainment is currently asking for players to submit screenshots and descriptions of their in-game heroes for a chance to have their creations appear in the comic series based on the game. The deadline is Thursday, August 4 at 6 p.m. PDT, so act fast! There will be more chances in the coming weeks for both heroes and villains to show their stuff, so keep an eye out for future contests.

If you're interested in checking out the DC Universe Online Legends comic, issue #13 goes on sale tomorrow, August 3.

DC Universe Online Update 4 is Live

Game Update 4 is now live in DC Universe Online and brings with it a new Fortress of Solitude raid, which you can see in the trailer below. Here are the patch's main features:

  • New Raid – Heroes and Villains will join Superman and Lex Luthor in a legendary battle to the front steps of The Fortress of Solitude which has been taken over by Brainiac! Look for Battle for The Fortress in your Mission Journal to begin!
  • New Alert – Fight your way back into the depths of The Batcave and experience the Outer Caverns as a four player Alert!
  • New PVP Map – Located in the heart of The Fortress of Solitude, this new Deathmatch arena puts 16 players in a tight and action filled map.  Containing new Power Ups and a trap room just waiting to bring the pain, it will quickly become a new favorite!

  • Body Scaling – In DCUO size does matter, and players can now choose brand new body types in Character Creation.

Just to be clear, this update doesn't include the ability to wield Green Lantern's light powers that were announced at SOE Fan Faire. Those will be added in the “Fight for the Light” downloadable content pack, which goes on sale later this summer.

Producer's Letter Discusses Downloadable Content

DC Universe Online Executive Producer Lorin 'DeadMeat' Jameson has written a producer's letter that focuses mainly on SOE Fan Faire and their reveal of the "Fight for the Light" downloadable content pack. As we learned at the convention, the pack will add Green Lantern's light powers to the game later this summer for the price tag of $9.99

To avoid any confusion, Jameson clarified that these downloadable content packs will not impact the game's regular update schedule. Players will still receive free updates, such as the upcoming Update 4 that adds the Fortress of Solitude raid to the game. "These DLC expansions are completely optional and are aimed at folks looking to expand upon the current game in a way that goes beyond what would be contained in a typical update." he said.

Jameson hinted that Update 4 should launch in the next few weeks and mentioned that the Shared Bank will go live once a technical issue is resolved. For more details, check out his full letter.

SOE Thanks DCUO Players with In-Game Gift

Following issues involving DC Universe Online freezing and crashing on the PlayStation 3, Sony Online Entertainment decided to thank players for their patience by giving them an in-game reward. Here are the details from Community Manager Tony "RadarX" Jones:

"You may have noticed that we recently experienced issues that took us some time to resolve, we appreciate your understanding during this effort – and your patience with the time it took to resolve.   As a thank you we would like to award everyone 7 Marks of Distinction.   We hope this helps you along your way to earning your Tier 2 armor in preparation for next month’s assault on The Fortress of Solitude!  Thank you again for playing DCUO – your dedication is our inspiration!  Please check your Journal starting tomorrow June 18th for a Mission called Shock to the System to receive your reward."

You'll notice that he says the assault on The Fortress of Solitude is coming "next month." During the E3 live stream, Game Director Mark Anderson said the raid is coming in Update 4 later this summer. Will we see Update 4 in July? Only time will tell.

SOE Addresses DCUO Freezing on the PS3

DC Universe Online Executive Producer Lorin "DeadMeat" Jameson has posted a letter on the game's Facebook page addressing crashes on the PlayStation 3. While today's hotfix has "lowered the number of crashes by a great deal," some players are still freezing due to an Out Of Memory error. Jameson basically said that the problem is difficult to pinpoint and repair since it's situational, but they'll keep working on a solution. You can read his full letter after the jump.

Community Manager Tony "RadarX" Jones also posted a possible workaround to the freezing issue on the official forums. "After using a social menu, especially in a crowded area, opening and closing your PDA may help," he said. You can provide feedback on the issue in that thread.
