Looks like there might be a new expansion pack after all...

That's the one I have, but it's probably the same one.

I wonder though. If this Blue mage is like previous ones, you have to get hit with the ability to learn it. Would that make Blue mage a tank job? Hm.

There's also the option to have a move like Kimahri's Lancet in FFX or whatever it was Gau's move from FFVI was to learn enemy moves. I think Quistis had one in FFVIII too to learn her blue magic.

Based on that, I think whatever it is will be a job ability of some sort, so the blue mage wouldn't necessarily need to get hit to learn an enemy move.

About that, Lancet was always a Dragoon ability. Kimahri has it because he's a hybrid of Dragoon and Blue Mage.

Gau wasn't a blue mage, he was a kind of post-modern Beastmaster. Strago was the Blue Mage. But I understand what you mean.

Quistis learned her spells through items dropped by monsters and I hated that system. But I also severely disliked FF8 :p

Either way, I guess we get to play the waiting game.

TBH I think the move that the BUM (Blue Mage since BLM is taken ;p) is using (the breath one, not the Spider's AoE slow, is the version of the Raptor breath.. The damage/Curse one, only makes sense because giving a BUM a Dragon Breath attack would just be insanely unfair... just my .02

I highly doubt it would be a tank class as it is a mage class. Please no RDM/WAR or RDM/NIN comments, please. Anyway, assuming that the job doesn't have a JA to learn an enemy's move, BLUs would probably have to "farm" enemy moves by making dedicated outings the way that we do with skilling up weapons and magic right now.

I still think a job ability makes the most sense for a BLU. Maybe not Lancet, but something similar would work quite well IMO.

I'd also like to see a few of the old classic blue mage moves be obtainable in some way, since mobs don't really use them. I'd say Mighty Guard and White Wind could either be quested or come off a NM that's triggered in some way. Maybe it'd be something like the NM that drops Rostrum Pumps, so you trade an item to pop it and then it's an automatic "drop" once you kill it.

Don't forget Quena Que from FFIX

He/She had to eat people to gain thier moves

Mayhap the nifty Ninja Mask hides thier huge malformed cannibal mouths full of razor sharp teef

Looks like we will have to wait and see. Don't forget in FF7 I believe with the Enemy materia you had to be hit by it to be able to learn it? It's been a while since I've played it but I think that's how it worked :D

Blatantly stolen from the RDM forums which was blatantly stolen from somewhere else:

Quote:
Square Enix officially announces “Final Fantasy XI: The Treasures of Aht Urhgan.” A new job, the “blue mage,” and new areas…directed by Mr. Ogawa.

In addition to unveiling the Xbox 360 version of “Final Fantasy XI” over in the MicroSoft Booth, Square-Enix corporation also officially unveiled the third expansion to “Final Fantasy,” following, “The Chains of Promathia,” entitled, “The Treasures of Aht Urhgan.” What a wonderful surprise it was to all of us gathered in the hall who had merely hoped to see the newest developments surrounding the Xbox 360, and instead were treated to the showing of the expansion disk as well. Although there was not a lot of information revealed, allow us to introduce what we have uncovered to the best of our knowledge.

First, please be aware that the information revealed was limited to a promotional video and a demonstration by the staff of the FFXI team. In fact, the showing of the video had not been announced previously and came as quite a shock to many, including ourselves.

Although the video itself was barely a minute long, the contents were extremely rich. Accompanied by a number of cryptic messages, the video begins as a digest of the most famous scenes from the “Rise of the Zilart,” and the “Chains of Promathia,” before launching into a lightning quick introduction to the four new areas.

These new areas include a ghost ship, an eerie swamp land reminiscent of the Boyahda tree, a beautiful verdant grasslands and a brand new sea route that is drenched in adventure. During the scene featuring the new sea route, one can see on the cliffs beyond, a view to whet the appetite; the tall walls of a grand castle and a cityscape with large domes tinged with Middle Eastern flair. It is unknown “where” the new areas will be in relation to the present Vana’diel…however to house a vision so grand, surely the only remaining area would be the very other side of the World Map.

At the end of the movie appear the FFXI community’s much anticipated new job, “Blue Mage,” wearing Middle Eastern robes. The Tarutaru uses what resembles a spider’s special attack, “Spider Web,” while the Hume raises his hands high over his head whilst breathing the Manticore’s “Heat Breath.”

In regards to the Blue Mage job, while it is certainly not a mainstream job, it is a very beloved one to those familiar with the FFXI genre—if asked to think of 10 jobs that define FF, it’s impact is enough to make such a list time and time again.

The Blue Mage’s special ability is, “Blue Magic.” By using a skill called, “Learning,” a Blue Mage may learn the attacks of enemies, using such in exchange for MP. There are many useful skills that can be learned, and the job itself will no doubt become a staple. Additionally, did you know that the existing FFXI commands, “Check,” and the BST’s “Examine,” were actually originally Blue Mage abilities?

However, such line of thought is based on previous examples, and we do not know for sure if the Blue Mage will continue to have such abilities in FFXI. What we hope to say however, is that this job will be come a middle line type (tanks are front line, most mages are back line) that will require MP; although until we are sure of the effects of “Learning,” who knows what will happen.

But at any rate, we all know that one of FFXI’s strengths is in the variety of enemies, the various unique attacks they use and the scale of the attacks they use. It should be safe to say that by harnessing these new abilities for ourselves, users can create a whole new way of playing. No doubt, the Blue Mages abilities will have a great impact on the level restrictions and support job system of FFXI. As for what attacks can be unlocked, at what level, and for how much MP? That will become a showcase of the developers’ skills.

Now, at the MicroSoft FFXI Corner, we were able to ask a few questions to the Publicity Producer, Mr. Wada. Although he would not review any more than was already revealed by the movie, we do know that the Director is now “Chains of Promathia,” Map Planner Kouichi Ogawa.

Contents are oft considered new jobs, new areas and new storylines and events that drive the whole. When asked the number of new jobs, he responded, “I am not able to answer that.” When asked if there were multiple jobs, a more positive, “I wonder…” We were also quite interested in learning how the story would continue to unfold. In the original and “Rise of the Zilart,” a direct approach was used by leveling from 1 to 75, whilst in “Chains of Promathia,” a more dramatic, level restricted area was introduced to create a more severe game balance.

With the changing of the guard to new director, Ogawa, while the number or specifics of quests and missions are yet unknown, the approach to unfolding these events will be wholly unique to “Treasures.” And with that, we conclude the report of what is know. We will be informing you of any new developments as they are unveiled.

Oh but no along comes Alauce and tells me now I have to learn enemy skills as a blue mage...

Man back to school just to look all groovy in that armour...

<sighs, as he grabs his lunchpail and heads to the bus stop>

I'd still much rather have eaten them...

Oh well looks like it's back to school time for this Red Mage...

Hey i wonder about Viable combinations...

here is my idea...

Red Mage/ Blue mage

Blue Mage/ Any mage

Allthough it is too bad they are only giving us one more new job....

If Bluemage is done with the true forms of the abilities i think its gonna be interesting to say the least.... the 2 skills learned that the video shows look like Spider's Web Slow and Raptor's Fire Breath attack, both of which are Area effects lol so ya bluemage and CN might not mix, as well as other places. SMNs at least get the ability to release/kill the avatar that did the AoE to lose hate from adds. It will be interesting to see how SE will do this type of stuff lol.

Must you post like that?

I didn't even think of that Shadowbuni, and you're right.

If anything, a Blue Mage job will definately require the player to think before they use a skill. It's not going to be as simple as "Oh all -ga spells are AoE, got it." Now we'll have Line of sight too, and the blue mage is going to need to know which skill has which area.

What? lol like anyone who has lvled or played blm or any other job that has an AoE hasn't accidentally aggroed stuff that way. I know i've died a few times from stuff like that lol. It would be kinda fun, altough i won't be looking forward to seeing 10+ Bluemages lfg while i am too lol.

But what i'm really hoping for is to be able to get a good understanding of how some of the enemy abilities really work.

Now the idea of me having an excuse for pulling hate seems real neat lol, i've tanked at least at some point with every job thus far what's one more lol. I can see it now:
Shadowbuni learns Sickle Slash.
Shadowbuni was defeated by the Bark Spider.

Wasn't me. But thanks for the accusation. You seem to be pretty sensitive about it for someone who doesn't care, but I digress.

Yeah I know -ga accidents happen (oh trust me I've done it myself >_>). I just wonder if they'll happen more because the abilities aren't going to say "Spider Webga" and the mage won't expect it. :p

I shudder to think of the Caveberry massacres in CN. :p

It wasn't an acusation really.

Sorry did not mean to accuse of it.

But yeah can you imagine the fun we will get to have with gobbie bombs. Oh man that is going to be fun fun silly willy.

So good, yeah I think will prolly keep the animations but make most of them non AoE or make them short range AoE so if there is nothing too close it won't effect things too bad.

Or SE will just give us a Bunch of AoE abilities and some shiny new AF and weapons and say "Go forth and destroy... everything"
heh but yeah I still wonder how Blue Mage will work and what would be a viable combo other than the obvious ones I mentioned something oh yeah Blue Mage/Beast master or Vice Versa.

Heh not only do I control the monsters I use thier abilities XD that sounds kinda fun actually I would got Blue Mage/ Beast Master personally cause well... I don't wanna look like a cheesy Highschool mascot ~.^

The oncarnation of the BLU that I seem to remember from tactics games (which the FFXI job system and skill system is heavily rooted in)seemed to put the BLU (which is also the 3 letter abbreviation used for the class in that gane) about on the same lvl as a RDM for combat ability. So I think your Blue mages are sword wielders and may be able to sport some aromors as well.

I could envision a lot of good JOB/Sj synergy with it and RDM. But thats just a Gob guess.

As to how the abilities are gained, traditionally the character must use or be hit by the ability (survival could be a req or not).
The first character I remember sporting "blue mage" style play was the female child painter in FF VI (althought here may have been BLU in FF V i cant remember.

It could open up a whole neew realm of gameplay options if they opt to go for a learning system as opposed to a scroll system. Im excited about it.

As to other job possibilities, im not sure what jobs will be picked, but i think 3 will be the magic number. i think we will see one mage class, 1 melee class, and one support/solo classs. But that once again is just a guess.

I am however excited about the possibility of a storyline based upon explorationa nd treasure hunting.

That is all.

Yeah I totally agree with you gob, but here is what I want..

It's a new continent right?

How about a new race? I mean come on a whole new continent populated by the exact same races as the other one. I mean I guess it would make sense but... If there are nothing but humes, elvaan, taru, galak and mithra there how come no one has ever gone there before now?

I don't know I'll prolly get flamed harcore for this but...

DAMN IT I WANT TO PLAY A MALE CAT PERSON!!!

Say what you will but I would love to play as a male version of a mithra, and since from what I have seen of Blue Mage AF and that one city it seems this new land is a reflection of our India. That being the case it would makr perfect sense to have a male mithra type race, and mayhap that is why the Mithra chose to flee here, seeing as this new land in appearance mimics our India (remeber just a guess) Mayhap it also mimics some of there customs of male domination.

Just some wild speculation on my part. Still think it would be cool if there was a male version of the Mithra.

Flame On my soul brotha's
