Ok... so here I am..... a lvl 62 blm, looking for silk tread 'coz I'm board and broke... I happen to be in jueno and needing gil so I decide to head to Rolanberry Fields and go for killing grubs for silk tread while killing Goobbue's for tree cuttings... while I don't get any tree cuttings I get thread drops up to six and decide to head to the Crawler's Nest. While there I kill a few worker crawlers that spawn before the "drop" zone (i.e., the area with those low hanging "balls"... sorry if I offend anyone). After killing the few that are near the Rolanberry Field zone I decide to drop down into the main area where all the partys are.

While there I decide what the hell and go for lizard skins. I try one lizard, get a link, sleep the link, get another link, sleepga the three links at this point, and kill them off one by one.... I finally kill all three of them off and a worker crawler spawns in front of me. No one is around and I decide to engage it. Hell... I have 6/12 silk thread drops, might as well, right? So I engage it, and while fighting it a player by the name of Irenicus looks at me and /sighs.... then runs by me... then sees me again... still fighting the same crawler.... and slaps me... and sends me a /tell that basically amounts to "go farm some where else"

WTF? I didn't /stun him from someone else, I didn't /"whateve" him from a puller... he was there... unclaimed for 5 seconds, I took him and started fighting... should I feel guilty? Since when has zones become "taboo" for farming since other parties were xping there? It's not like I was killing 10 crawlers a second? I was picking off 1 crawler every few minutes and when he started ******** to me about it? Sorry... but WTF? There are plenty of other areas to xp at various lvls, am I wrong to think that just because your a "blank" level it gives you the right to all the mobs? I've helped various folks in this game with various missions and tasks and it just pisses me off to no end to think that I'm such a "bad guy" for taking a few mobs from an area where others xp off of while not even fighting over claims (i.e., two show up at the same time and have to "dual" it out for who gets the mob). Again, I'm not an "uber" lvl and can kill mobs left and right, I'm just farming'em and killing'em at a pace that doesn't put me at any danger to buy something useful for my job.

So wtf? Where is the line?

Well in the case of crawlers there are many other places you can go. And assuming this allegedly lower drop rate for lower level mobs exists, it can be easily offset by much faster kills. I mean seriously we've got Sarutabaruta, Tahrongi, Shrakrami, Pashhow, Rolanberry, Oztroja...I personally hunt them in Pashhow and have no problem getting a stack of silks in about 45 mins to an hour without TH2 (but with TH1 I must admit).

I don't remember if it was here or on Gamefaqs but there was a similar thread about Boyahda spiders. I remember most people came to the general agreement that no one has the "right" to the monsters if they're unclaimed, but a certain level of "netiquette" exists. But there's really no one there to enforce it. I guess basically...don't be surprised if you get a lot of angry /tells and emotes from people in common exp areas if you're farming their prey. Especially if you're (I'm speaking in general) so high level you kill two before the party can kill one.

I don't know where a line should be drawn, but I guess the best thing to do is to consider other hunting grounds before walking into common exp areas, especially if the prey you're after is abundant in so many other areas. That's about all I can really say on the matter.

While you did not do anything wrong, most times farmers will avoid exp locations due to exp parties. One of the reasons for this is because the higher level you are the faster you kill a mob, while the exp party in there will take twice as long. SO while your killing 2 maybe 3 crawlers they could still be fighting one. Now like I said as long as you didn't steal from them you didn't do anything, and yeah you can go wherever you want to farm as long as you can handle the mobs.

But might I suggest that if your farming silks relocate to another area. When a certain mob only spawns in a certain location then I can very well see your point, but something like crawlers for silk there are alot of other locations you can farm with taking way from an exp party.

I can only assume the reason the exp party acted that way to you is because of how some people farm in exp areas and don't care about any parties in there and wipe out the whole area. Giving them nothing to exp on. (I have seen that too many times before)

Thank you for your responses. The part that just makes me so mad about this was being jumped on after the first crawler I engaged in the lower / deeper area. Not to mention I wasn't nuking, I had on +acc and +stg equipment and was doing only melee with the few cures and drain spells in between and using dagger (god forbid I get weapon skill ups while farming...).

If I were killing these things left and right and using a stun or quick nuke claim macro then I'd understand, but this was not the case. One claim with no one around and mid fight I get berated for attacking an "exp" mob... /sigh

Ultimately my choices for going there was just out of shear convenience and I figured it would have a slightly better drop rate then outside. I've been to the maze a number of times and have seen the farmers there and didn't feel like taking the time to find out who, if any, where already there killing things. I wanted to get in, get some skill ups, finish my stack of silk, and get out.

Maybe he didn't know you were on the same one. I dunno. Pull up a chair it's story time:

A few weeks ago, CN was overrun with parties (as usual) but other pullers weren't our only competition. There were at least three people farming the crawlers in there. At first I thought they were just clearing the way for the guardian crawler but I never saw it pop. Our party was near the tunnel that leads to the beetle room and there was a RDM in there killing every crawler that popped. We had to use both our THF and MNK to pull because WOW were there a lot of people.

I can't say that's the reason for Irenicus' slapping you, but it was pretty bad in there a while back. No one can tell you where you can and can't hunt obviously but like I said, I guess take into consideration where you're going. I understand the convenience thing, I really do. I would've done the same thing quite honestly. But yeah, expect to get some ticked off people.

Give Buburimu a try for the crawlers, along the eastern coastline past the entrance to Mhaura. There's gobs of them that no one ever thinks to farm.
