NPC Quest, how to do it!Follow

I hope this helps! This is the info I have compiled:

Part 1
Talk to Luto Mewlirah in Upper Jeuno just past the AH and the church.
She asks you to help her investigate people in Jeuno who carry mirrors.
This is where you choose your race/gender of your NPC friend.
When you go around Jeuno, certain NPCs like Red Ghost in port, and Akta in Ru'Lude Gardens will ask about the characters physical features. "Was her hair up in a bun? Was it this color? etc etc". This is the CHARACTER CREATION process cleverly disguised, because this will determine how the NPC will look.
When you've talked to at least one, talk to Bheem the NPC at the gate to Battalia Downs in Upper Jeuno for a cutscene. After that, go talk to Luto again for a Silver Ingot.

Part 2
Zone out of UJ and come back to Luto for another cutscene involving a little girl that's gone missing. Go talk to Bheem and he says your NPC friend went to Eldeime Necropolis after talking to that same little girl.
Go to G-8 entrance to Eldeime Necropolis in Batallia Downs
F-9 in Eldeime Necropolis is a ???, talk to it to trigger NM battle. You do the battle with your new NPC friend. It was REALLY easy since your NPC friend will help quite well.
After NM fight EDIT: FIRST TALK TO YOUR NPC, THEN return to Upper Jeuno and talk to Luto for another cutscene. After the cutscene, zone out of Upper Jeuno and come back and talk to Luto again for another cutscene.

Part 3
You and your NPC friend are sent to Sandy to find another magic mirror.
Talk to Portaire in Cargo Room B of Port Sandy for a cutscene.
After that, head to Ghelbsa Outpost to the hut.
You'll get a BCNM fight called "Mirror, Mirror"
The fight is 1 on 1 capped at level 40 against a Carrion Dragon, and isn't too hard even if you stroll in without appropriate gear.
Halfway through the battle, your NPC friend will join you to help you finish things off. After the battle, head back to Jeuno and talk to Luto. After the cutscene you'll get the "Signal Pearl" and the ability to call on your NPC friend in future battles. Happy hunting!

Edit: As far as I know, you get no say in the job of your companion. Mine is the Mithra named Raka Mhaimov, she wields a sword and shield and has Provoke. I suspect she may be a Paladin or a Warrior, but I will have to conduct more testing to see.

Also: Didn't realize there was another compilation up when I wrote this, sorry...

Edit2: The AI so far is fairly intelligent, and managed to keep hate during the Dragon battle despite Ramuh whacking away with the best Bloodpacts I could dish out. At the very least, the AI knew to keep hate off of soft ol' me. ^_^

Edit 3: Big update! If you go to a Rendesvous Point you can call your NPC friend to chat. Just talking apparently brings up idle chat about past events. You can see their level and "fighting style" (Mine says "Shield") or you can ask them to tell you what they're doing, when their HP is low and when their MP is low. At the moment, I cannot determine if you can change their fighting style, but I imagine you can.

Stolen from the main FFXI forum, for those of us who never bother to read there.

EDIT: By the way, DO NOT CLICK ON YOUR NPC! If you highlight him and hit "Enter", he will leave you, and you will not be able to call him back for another 20 hours. Something tells me we are gonna have a mini-patch from SE for this in the next couple of days.

EDIT (second): From reading on the main forum, the skeleton NM is apparently VERY easy for a 62 whm to solo...and we all know that a 62 WHM has problems soloing even the goblins right outside Kazham, so I'll leave it up to ya'll to figure out how hard it really is ;)

Also, the BC is easy also according to most on the main forum until your NPC friend joins you. Apparently, a BLM can do it, without even THINKING about hitting 2 hour solo, and now...you can take three people into the BC with you!

EDIT (three): Apparently the NPC starts out at level thirty also.

EDIT (four): According to the people I've talked to in game, if you can ride a chocobo there, you can summon your NPC (with the notable exceptions being Glacier and Xcarbard and Qufim as NPC friendly areas). You can't summon your NPC in dungeons, not inside Lufaise Meadows, Miseraux Coast, or any of the capped areas just as the Promys, Riverne Site A or B, Sacrarium, etc...
And yeah, its wierd considering the quest partially takes place inside the necropolis, but people say you can't summon there either.

Your NPC gone for the day? Drop the pearl, go back to the rondevous point, and talk to your NPC. He will then give you a new pearl to keep ahold of with the timer reset to....ZERO!!! He only gives one new pearl a real life day though, so be warned.

I'll keep updating this post as I find out more about the NPC!!!

Awesome thanks Nights! I can't wait to do this!

Wow Nights, thank you!

I'm relieved this doesn't involve trading anyone items or any huge fights requiring an alliance or anything. We've seen in the past what happens when a particular item or type of item, at least, is needed for an event *cough*Halloween*cough*.

Now if I can get past this POL-1160 error >.>

Sounds cool except the level 30 part. I can just see it now. "Level your NPC n00b!" -_-

It's kind of confusing too. Like the descriptions of the face models may be different from how you yourself would describe it, and unless there are some NPCs I've missed, you can't explicitly describe the NPC you may want.

Example, I wanted the orange haired mullet taru but instead I got blue hair because I certainly didn't know Bheem's favorite color. So I'm hoping you can start over because I do NOT want to be stuck with that one....

Yea, you can start over after you finish the whole thing I've heard.

But I wouldn't know, cause I can't activate this quest!

Does anyone know why? Im a 40 PLD and I have level 5 Jeuno Fame...

Here another first hand account of the quest if you'd like. Nights' quote does the job but leaves out an NPC and some people claim that if you dont talk to the NPC after the skeleton fight, you can't continue the quest.

Firstly, talk to Luto Mewlirah in Upper Jeuno just past the AH. After a conversation she will ask you to find people in Jeuno who are thought to carry a special mirror from the Near East. She tells you to pick a list so you can go track down a person. The 5 lists she has are the 5 races of Vana'diel, the first step in designing your NPC. Then you must pick from a list of names (like the Dragoon quest for the Wyvern name). Now, she'll send you on your happy way and it's your duty to gather some information around town about that person whose name you picked from the list. You do this by talking to specific NPCs around town. The ones I found where:

Red Ghost - Galka in Port Jeuno walking back and forth across the street (mules commonly /follow him)
Akta - Old Hume man (think Maat) in Ru'Lude Gardens. He's directly across from the zone line to Upper Jeuno, overlooking the embassies.
Kuah Dakonsa - Mithra in Lower Jeuno on the overpass past the AH (right outside the Merry Minstral).
There may be a fourth NPC somewhere, but I haven't found him/her yet, please mention in this post if you have.

These NPCs will say they may have seen your person and give you a vague description of them. This is the next step in designing your NPC, as they are describing the available face choices for your race (you may want to have the BradyGames guide with all the faces pictures nearby). Be very careful when choosing because you don't get another chance until the quest is over. You may want to talk to all of the NPCs first and then choose later, the descriptions are pretty confusing.

Once you have chosen the correct description, they mention that they saw your NPC leave for Batallia Downs. So thusly you must find someone who sees people enter and leave Upper Jeuno regularly. That person is Bheem, and you'll find him right by the zone to Batallia in Upper Jeuno, across from the Home Point. He will say that he thinks he saw your NPC, but wants to know if that person's hair was his favorite color. Don't ask me what his favorite color is, I don't know, but most people say that when they chose "Yes," their NPC had blonde hair. No matter what you answer, you are then shown a cutscene with the NPC you just created. If this matches the one you were going for, great! If not, you cannot start over until you completely finish this quest. Sorry.

Now that you have your NPC created and you spoke to Bheem, return to Luto for a Silver Ingot (don't ask). She says she'll keep you updated on any new developments. To get her to continue the quest, you must zone out and back into Upper Jeuno and speak to her again. You then learn a girl is missing and Luto volunteers you for the job (how nice). Speak to Bheem again and he mentions he saw your NPC leave for the Eldieme Necropolis but before doing so, Bheem also saw the girl talking to him/her. There's your lead.

After this, enter Eldieme from G-8 and go on in. It's impossible to get lost in here, and the ??? isn't too far in. However there are Gazers in this room, which are level 41-43, and they aggro to sound. Keep this in mind. At this point there's likely to be a very long line, so show some class and take your place at the end of it. Don't worry, it moves pretty fast, because the NM Skeleton that you pop from the ??? is pretty easy for anything over level 45. You can fight this NM in a party too, but only the person who popped the NM gets credit for defeating it. Anyway, the NM is a Skeleton, and your NPC is a Paladin no higher than level 30, so plan accordingly. The fight will start off with the NPC immediately Provoking the NM, so be ready to cure him. If your NPC dies, you fail the quest and you must start over from the beginning. After the Skeleton is defeated, immediately speak to your NPC again, and he/she will say that the girl will be escorted back to Jeuno. You're now done here and may leave this god forsaken tomb.

Return to Upper Jeuno and speak with Luto yet again. Another cutscene plays out, and you learn a little more about this mysterious mirror. After the cutscene ends, zone out and back into Upper Jeuno and speak with Luto once more. Your NPC mentions your next step being in San d'Oria, and that's all he can tell you. So hop on an airship for Sandy and enjoy the ride.

Once in Port San d'Oria, go to Cargo Room B and speak with Portaire. He's right by the large wooden door on the bottom floor. He tells you a little more about these mirror and mentions that his was stolen by Ghelsba Orcs. Well we can't have that! Gather up some level 40 equipment and some food (DRinks are a good idea too) and head for Ghelsba Outpost. Remember the hut where you fought for the San d'Oria mission and for the Dragoon quest? Same place. Only one person can be in there at a time so you're likely to be waiting in another long line at this point. This is a one on one fight, capped at 40, and your NPC will help out. It's not too hard, but watch your NPC's health because again, if he dies, it's all over. The NPC won't show up immediately so you'll be on your own for awhile. It's not hard at all if you're level 40 and have decent gear, just always be prepared.

When you win, return to Upper Jeuno once again and for the last time speak with Luto. You get a cutscene, a Signal Pearl, and you're done! If you're happy with your current NPC then congratulations, he/she is now yours to summon whenever you want. If you aren't happy with your NPC, you can restart the quest after some time has passed, apparently. I haven't done this myself yet, but a couple people I spoke with said you have to wait a Vana'diel week (8hrs). Can't prove that.

Hope this helps out a bit...

UPDATE!!

They've updated this quest since Ghelsba became more than overcrowded last night. You may now take three people into the fight with the dragon in Ghelsba. However, the same rules apply. It's capped at level 40, and you may NOT let your NPC die. And, like always, only one group may fight the dragon at a time. HOwever the whole group gets credit for this fight, unlike the Skeleton NM.

So happy hunting and I hope you don't have to wait as long as I did.

Just a thought ... If you don't like your NPC and want to recreate him/her, can't you just let him die in the Skeleton NM fight, then start over in Jeuno, instead of doing all the quest ?

Skeleton NM is really easy. There's people there to heal you if you can't beat it solo. The dragon is easy as well. I went as pld with only decent armor (definetely lower quality than most PLD have at that level). He hit me for around 10-25 but missed alot. The only thing that will cause you to possibly lose his is ability to turn you to stone. Basically as long as you had built up enough hate over the NPC, you can just sit back and let the NPC kill the dragon while it attack you. Of course this only works if you can stay alive while it does this.

I can confirm that if you dont talk to the NPC after you kill the skeleton you cant continue the quest as its laid out here. I'm sure there is a way to continue on but i havent found it yet, so dont do what i did ><

Note : It is said on the General Forums that the NPC last about 45 minutes. The Signal Pearl has a 20-hours recast time.
Someone said his NPC changed his gear after 600-700 EXP, it was a Galka.

My NPC changed gear without gaining any exp the first time. I was playing around in Qufim with her on my MNK. She may of gained exp, but I sure didn't.

She changed into a Traders body peice. Then yesterday she changed into a Seer's Tunic... its as if she's trying to tell me something.

peace,
CR

You're wrong. You click on the NPC to dismiss her/him. If you don't click on her within 10 seconds, she disappears. This is how it was meant to be.

I just heard that now they have no time limit but after they gain close to 1000 exp (remember they gain exp different than us), they leave.

Maybe I'll check this later. I'll solo a few smithies in Yuhtunga with him maybe.

Anyone have any information an WHERE you can summon them?

I wanted to call mine in Giddeus last night and got no love.

*yawns* Wow...was up late last night doin summerfest stuff >.<

According to the people I've talked to in game, if you can ride a chocobo there, you can summon your NPC (with the notable exceptions being Glacier and Xcarbard and Qufim as NPC friendly areas). Here's a thread from the main page about it: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=1121956032685243009&num=26

Also, side note!!!

Your NPC gone for the day? Drop the pearl, go back to the rondevous point, and talk to your NPC. He will then give you a new pearl to keep ahold of with the timer reset to....ZERO!!!

He only gives one new pearl a real life day though, so be warned.

Just found this out:

Bheem's favorite color = Hairstyle A

Obviously if you answer that it's not his favorite color, it's Hairstyle B. That oughta help a bit. :p
