Hey Bismark!
I have a few comments about the new fishing update, and some questions on where to fish.

First, about the update; FISHING IS OFFICIALLY COOL! This makes fishing so much more fun, and profitable. The update will probably have more people get into fishing, as it's not as boring as it was(I've fallen asleep fishing before -_-). You actually have to work for your catch, which is fun. Plus, in Zerhun Mines, atleast, I haven't seen much of any bots.

My questions are;
1. When does fishing really pick up in profiting? Making 23k tonight out of Moat Carp and Tricolored carp wasn't bad, but more money in FFXI never hurts.

2. After I get lvl 8 in fishing and pass the test, where do I go and what do I use? I have been fishing in Zerhun Mines or Knightwell in West Rounfare for Moat Carp and the occasional Tricolored Carp, using a Carbon Rod with Insect Paste.

~~~Any and All Help is Appreciated~~
Yeah there's no doubt the new update is cool, the market is being flooded with moat carp now though since everyone and their grandmother can catch them easier. It's not necessarily a bad thing for people who want to buy them, but for the people who are going to sell them, the undercutters we're already there and got a T-shirt.
I used to be able to fish for a stack of moat carp and put them on the AH and in two to three minutes they were sold. Well I decideed to try the update myself and went out to fishing (after realizing people raised the price on insect paste I used to get stacks for 300 gil, now people are selling them for 1000 a piece, but anyway...) I am level 28 fishing, so it's no problem catching carp. I got a stack and went to put them on the AH and noticed there was 88 stacks of carp on sale at the AH in Bastok. Now I had to fish for quite a while when I was a SAM to afford a jujitsu gi way back when, and I never remember seeing that many moat carp on the AH.
Well I expected a little wait for them to sell but figured they would all sell evenetually. Well I put them up at 9 a.m. EST and they still hadn't sold by 9:45 p.m. I wondered why it was taking so long but I pretty much knew. I went back and checked the history and sure enough, stacks of moat carp were now going for 3,000 gil instead of their usual 4,000.
Fishing is always profitable if you make your own insect paste and catch moat carp. It takes a while as the gains are so small and bait bites into your profit, but it does make you money. I heard somewhere that fishing picks up sometime after you get to level 50 in skill to catch the bigger fish. Don't quote me on that however.
I went from level 0 to level 27 right on that bridge in Zeruhn Mines. It's a great place to skill up. If you need money you can catch moat carp but what gets you skill and what you should fish for for skill ups are tricolored carps. Tricolored carp caps at 27 fishing skill. I used insect paste and a glass fiber rod (I can fix it easily if it breaks using a light crystal). It took a while since you're not always catching the tricolored carp, but I did it, so I know it works. Good luck.
Edited for grammar goodness.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, fishing is truly fun. I've even started working toward my Lu Shang now because of this patch and the changes made (I plan to catch all my moaties, we'll see if I actually do that or not haha ^^)
This is what I've done to get to 26 fishing, I know I have a long way to go but this will help any one else starting out.
Level 01-03 Port Windy
Rod: Carbon
Bait: Sabiki Rig
Target Fish: Bastore Sardines and Quuus
Level 03 to 11 Windy Woods (Knightswell would be better, due to target fish)
Rod: Composite
Bait: Insect Paste
Target Fish: Moat Carp
Level 11 to 18 East Ronafure
Rod: Composite (Carbon may be ok too but if it snaps you loose your bait)
Bait: Fly Lure
Target Fish: Cheval Salmon or Shining Trout
Note: To get to my favorite fishing hole, exit from South Sandy to East Ronafure, then turn right and head straight to the river, follow that till you hit the first waterfall and drop down, that's where I fished.
After you ding 18, don't forget to grab one of your Salmon and head over to the guild in Port Windy to pass your test!
Level 18-26 La Theine Plateau & Ferry (Ferry catches have picked up enough to make skilling up on Nebimonites worth while and profitable)
If in La Theine:
Rod: Composite
Bait: Frog Lure (let me know if you can't find this, I can make them for you for free if you bring me the ingredients)
Target Fish: Red Terrapin, Giant Catfish, Dark Bass
If on Ferry:
Rod: Mithran (Carbon is ok if you can fix it or bring extras)
Bait: Crayfish Paste
Target Fish: Nebimonites
Note: Ferry fishing is dangerous because of the Sea Horror but very profitable under the right moon phase.
Note that the next fish for testing at level 28 is Giant Catfish, so it's a good idea to spend at least a little time in La Theine. Red Terrapin used to NPC well, I haven't tried since the patch to see how much they're going for.
If you ever break your carbon rod, let me know in game and just send me the broken rod and a light crystal and I'll fix it for ya for free ^^
Good luck !
Rate up for good information Win. Now, if I can only find some boots, none on sale at the AH.
Oh hell, you were the one looking for boots?
There's a dude in Port Sandy next to the Lu Shang NPC that has a bazaar full of them. Name begins with N, can't remember what it is though. Check him out, maybe I'll try to pop on with my Sandy mule to get you a pair of boots if I think of it. I fished next to him for 2 hours and saw he was selling boots (both Angler's and Fisherman's) but couldn't remember why that was important. Sorry cat >.>
Oooo! Thanks. I will check as soon as I get home. Or maybe I will have Yoshi log on and see if he can get me some.
Thanks Anubis :)
Honestly I just read the posts over at Marissa's fishing forums and picked up that this was a good way to get going. I have a few options at 30, I'm going to try South Gustaberg at the cliffs with a Composite Rod and Sliced Sardine as bait or head to good old Rabao with Carbon and Insect paste to get moaties and skill up on Sandfish.
I levelled off the cliffs from 27 with Sliced Sardines at 32 (ish) I switched bait to Sinking Minnow and continued to skill up there until around 46 (Gold Lobster), it's one of those place where the skill ups come in waves, so a little patience is required. In addition, Ogre Eels sell well and make an additional bonus here. I did try Rabao but had a terrible time getting skill ups. This is just my personal experience, I though I would share in the hope it help a little.
Having said that, since the patch I have found things have changed a little at my current level, so I can not vouch that this information is still good.
Yeah, I have a feeling the book will be re-written on fishing.
Small example:
On a 0% New Moon I decided to go ferry fishing for nebs at level 24 and in 1 hour I got .6 skill ups off the nebs and quit with 3.5 stacks. Just turned them all into black ink this morning actually :)
I've gotten another .2 in the pond in La Theine at level 26 fising so I know that it's still good for a few more levels although I lost a frog lure this morning >.<
Also, I changed to a Mithran Rod and it's going much better, you get a few "Too Small" messages but I've pulled in several giant cats and a few terrapin and got a .1 skill up.
Edit: Noticed what I wrote had you going to Port Windy to get Moaties and I meant for that to say Windy Woods. Updated.
Thanks all for the information!
I fished last night when the moon phase was at 74%, and I easily landed 5 stacks of moaties, but I went ahead and quit early so I could make the profits. Got lvl 8, so I can take the test now, then I think I need to get new poles (been using Carbon Rods)
Long time since anyone posted on this post:D. I just hit lvl 18 in fishing, mostly due to I went on a lvling spree with Samurai, got him to 60, now I need some gil. I appreciate the information from Wintaru. Lvls 11-18 really slowed down in profit, but seems like things will pick up again. :D
Good posts Wintaru! I agree that [orange]Knightswell[white] is a good place to skill up to [yellow] 11[white], or to just catch Moaties. You can go the poor taru's route and use little worms(you will catch crayfish as well as moaties). Or you can use insect balls, and catch a Moat almost everytime you cast. I skilled up here from [yellow]6-11[white] in about 15 hours Earth time. If you cannot afford a composite rod, just farm [gold]Yew Fishing Rods[white] from the [red]Goblin Fishers[white] that surround [orange]Knightswell[white]. They pop all the time, and if your [gold]Yew Fishing Rod[white] breaks go grab another [red]Goblin Fisher[white]. They drop these things like crazy.
Also, I leveled [yellow]13-15[white] last night during Full Moon with a [gold]Mithran Rod[white] using a [gold]Shrimp Lure[white] in [orange]Port Sandy[white]. It only took 2.5 hours. I was catching [gold]Tricolored Carp[white] and [gold]Gold Carp[white]. Half the skill-ups were from fish I couldn't even reel in. Try this out if you want to avoid [red]monsters[white] or you are just a fraidy-cat-city-slicker[white].
[b][silver]Goodluck and [gold]Fish[silver] On!
