It really wasnt that great of a year for video games though, imo.
I keep hearing that, but it doesn't really register for me. I feel like this year's been better than most.
Perhaps I'm looking for different things out of the market than others? A lot of my gaming mileage this year has been done on smaller downloadables.
The bulk of my gaming this year has been Forza 4 (came out in 2011), Diablo 3 (extreme disappointment), NCAA Football 11/Madden 13 (cant give these GotY), Torchlight 2 (easily second place for me) and borderlands 2.
I played a ton of other other games sure, but those got most of my attention.
What's your nomination?
Journey's my GOTY, and it's not even remotely close. A very special game, IMHO, and I think we'll grow to appreciate that even more as we get some distance from it.
Isn't that a very short game though? Value goes a long way for me in what I consider a great game, and if that game is ~2 hrs (first google result) for 15 dollars, thats pretty terrible value when im getting 3hrs to the dollar in torchlight 2 (only level 48 out of 100 on my main character to boot) and close to 4 hrs to the dollar in borderlands 2.
It's a short game, yes. 2-3 hours, tops.
Whether that's worth $15 depends, of course, on the perceived value of the experience. A straight dollar-to-hours comparison is fallacious, because it assumes that those hours spent on different games are inherently identical. But we don't weigh all our gaming experiences the same; some are more potent than others.
For example, all the hours that I've spent in Borderlands 2 don't amount to more than the 2 hours I've spent in Journey. BL 2 was entertaining, no doubt. But Journey wowed me...I played the final sequence with with my mouth agape in some kinda weird joy/amazement combination. I'll take those 2 hours over the hundreds I've spent in Skyrim. But that's just me. It's all about your internal metrics, of course. Wholly subjective.
'Course, it'd probably be tough for you to really love Journey now, after it's been talked up to death.
PS: I expect it'll see a discount after it gets some GOTY nods. So maybe it'd be worth waiting until then?
