Scariest Games or PartsFollow

On another forum, I mentioned that the Ravenholme part of Half Life 2 didn't strike me as especially scary. Another person said it was the scariest thing ever. I said that, out of recent games I've played, the snork infested abandoned labs in Stalker: SoC and parts of Metro 2033 gave me more heebie-jeebies than Ravenholme did. They said I was insane and we agreed to resolve it with pistols at dawn. That I'm posting now should let you know how that ended.

I don't contend that any of those examples are "scariest ever!" but let's hear some well done scary games (or just parts of games). I'm sure Amnesia will be mentioned soon enough -- I have it but still haven't played it.

Define "scary" however you want. I've never played a game that made me wet myself or gave me nightmares but I've gone through parts that made me feel jumpy and uneasy while I went through them.

Superman 64 is pretty damn scary in that it was released at all.

As far as things that give me the shivers, involuntary amputations (blown up, torn off, eaten, etc) tend to make me uneasy.

In the original Resident Evil, when the dog crashes through the window. Smiley: lol Got me every time, even when I knew it was coming.

Doom 3 scared the living **** out of me on multiple occasions. I hated it when the corridor would suddenly go pitch black and you'd hear an imp screaming behind you.

Of course, playing it in a dark basement didn't help things.

I feel like the first thing that you have to do is identify what types of stuff you find particularly creepy/scary/disturbing.

For me, I think I'm most tweaked out by things that seem subtlely out-of-place, or abnormal. It's weird, but I'm less scared by things like monsters jumping out and overtly attacking you. I get more scared of things that just stand still, seeming vaguely malevolent and otherworldy. Put a mask on something like that, and it doubles the scare factor. Ever seen that scene with the dog wearing the mask in The Unborn? That gave me the heebie-jeebies.

So that being said, here's a great example, and probably the scariest scene in gaming for me:

Omg, me too. That was actually the first thing I thought of.

Dark Souls' and Demon Souls' general ambiance and tendency to jump out at you, while not scary, are decently high on the "eerie" list. And I've definitely jumped a few times playing them.

I never really buy horror games, though, so I don't have much else. Besides these, the scariest game I own is probably Fallout New Vegas. Smiley: lol

If we are talking disturbing, then I recall a scene from the first Xenosaga game.

They had just taken a huge beating, and most of the troops (who were artificially created humans) were severely wounded by gunfire and bleeding out on the ground. Another soldier (real human with a strong prejudice against the others), uses a sort of control computer to give them a forced order through, I suppose, their cybernetic parts--he forced them to crawl towards a central area, despite their injuries (complete with their moans of pain).

Then, it turns out, each of them had self-destruct mechanism put in place in case something ever went haywire and turned them aggressive. So he blows them all up to destroy a bridge, as the main character screams at him to stop, as he had no right to play god with their lives (which was all she could do, since he was in a mech).

Damn, I haven't thought about Xenosaga in years.

You know what was scary about Xenosaga?

The characters' creepy, soulless, doll eyes. Seriously.

my first scare in a game was probably in System Shock 2, just from random crap falling and making a ton of noise.

There were a few scary moments in F.E.A.R. and i find pretty much all of Amnesia to be terrifying, but I really get into that game.

At least they turned that into a plot point a few times. Smiley: lol

Hehe yeah Eske I agree that was creepy as hell. There was a part in Bioshock that did the same thing.

I remember when I was younger I was playing Tomb Raider 3 with my cousin. We would take turns after the other person died. Well we finally figured out how to get past the very first part of the game and I was playing. I was riding down a zip line to be greeted by a tiger jumping out from a bush at the bottom. I naturally jumped out of shock. My cousin proceeded to scream and run down the hall. Smiley: lol

When I was really young I would have nightmares about the final boss in Super Mario 2. The flying eagle head things certainly were nightmare fuel for my young mind. I absolutely hated defeating them.

More recent games though I would go with Amnesia. I know it is a well known horror game but it does the suspense very well. Alas I will not play it. I prefer to keep my pants clean.

I'd rank the pedophile with the god complex pretty high in Xenosaga.

Dead Space really got the ambience thing down. Walking down seemingly abandoned corridors hearing something skittering along in the vents...

Silent Hill 2, when you walk out of that one room in the apartment building, and Pyramid Head is standing on the other side of the bars staring at you. I just stood still for 5 minutes watching him to make sure he wasn't going to charge at me.

When I was younger, the forest temple and the well from Legend of Zelda: OoT were pretty terrifying. Shadow temple did a bit, but I guess it became less terrifying because I knew it was supposed to be scary.

What I played of the demo for Fatal Frame was decently terrifying. I tend to dislike "jump out and say boo," type horror, but I thought it was executed well to the point where it became and ever-present threat that was itself a terror, without need to ever be carried out.

I haven't had any particularly scary moments in games of late, but I haven't played any particularly scary games of late either.

ReDeads. F*cking ReDeads.

And the Swamp temple in Majora's Mask, all the little black things in the shadows that all you could see was their eyes. Heaven help you when you had to run through a pitch black room and all you heard was the things scuttling around.

Actually, you know, almost all of Majora's mask was freaky, in a surreal way. But it was also pretty awesome in the same surreal way if that makes sense.

Speaking of Majora's Mask there were two parts to that game that took several days of amping myself up to play through. One was the alien invasion. Creepy music and just overall frightening considering what happens if you skip helping and show up the next day. The second being when the moon crashes into the planet. -shudder-

Yeah, the Forest Temple's music really freaked me out when I first played the game.
