Age of Conan is going free-to-play and unrated this summer. It's your typical hybrid model where you can play some content for free or become a premium member to access extra content. It'll also have an item shop. More details here: http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=26488

Also, the game is getting a new adventure pack that features content from the new "Conan the Barbarian" movie. Details and movie trailer here: http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=26479.

I honestly thought it was already free to play. They kept sending me emails saying "Come back and play for free" a while ago, I never read them, so they must have meant getting a couple free months.

It'd be interesting to see if they finally added content for people above level 40 or so.

Will I get to play as Jason Momoa?

There is a new Conan movie?! *Watches trailer. Woot that looks fun.

Honestly I have been tempted to give AoC another try. The 1-20 "Tortage" experience was excellent. It was just after that it got boring. I hear they have added quite a bit of content since then.

With it going F2P, I may have to actually check it out.

This is good news for me since I have been in the "I am not paying for an MMO right now" mood for the passed three months.

I use to play AoC prelaunch and for a month or two after launch. It was an alright game, and I enjoyed it enough to level 8 classes up to the point of them leaving the beginner island.

But then I hit a brick wall (at the time, I guess)... I couldn't figure out which of the 8 classes I enjoyed the most to continue on with, and I couldn't make the other 4 classes to try out because at the time (or at least I thought) you could only have 8 character slots. I didn't want to delete any of the 8 classes I had to make an open slot, so I just canceled my subscription out of frustration.

I am seeing now that the F2P game lets you have two slots (with a maximum of 18), and the premium side gives you 8 slots (with a maximum of 18)... so is Funcom selling extra slots up to the 18? Is this semi-new? Did my hateful email (about ALT-itus) to Funcom when I canceled persuade them to do something about it? =P

I noticed the trailer had the infamous "gut wrenching scream and fall into distance" sound effect.

Makes me think of Starcraft whenever I hear it.

With it being free, I might actually unwrap that copy I won a few years ago.

It's actually a pretty good game. And very beautiful.

I believe the major turn-off for me was the combo style combat (left, right, left, left) and the somewhat demanding graphics. If it turns F2P this summer, I might just dust off the old box and reinstall it when my rig arrives.

The biggest turn-on for me with that game was the FINISH HIM! FATALITY! style deaths. Nothing like doing a combo move on a low-health NPC and watch it get sliced to bits (literally).

I actually think of "Aaahh!!!_Real_Monsters" Every time I hear it.
The end of the opening theme.

hope these brings in a lot of people; If it does I will be happy to play as a premium.
Dead servers are what stopped me from ever playing.

I do have a question about the character slots again. I am hoping someone actually knows the answer to it.

I am wondering how you can get more character slots (free or premium account)? I know you get 8 slots for having a paying subscriber account and only 2 slots for being a free account holder... but both accounts are listed as 18 slots are max for each account... Do you have to pay for each extra slot in the Funcom store? Or is there a different way of acquiring the extra slots?

Thanks.
