Columbia University drug bust leads to 5 arrestsFollow

#1 Feb 23 2011 at 12:25 AM Rating: Decent
5 students had been imprisoned Tuesday included in the substantial Columbia University narcotic bust. The youthful suspects muttered not one word while they had been handcuffed and taken away that morning. The students reportedly sold narcotics worth thousands of dollars straight from fraternity homes and dorm rooms. Perhaps if they could find out how to get a payday loan they might not have been selling narcotics. Anyone suspected of involvement in Columbia University drug bust

The students associated with the Columbia University drug bust said they sold drugs to pay for school tuition, as outlined by the Columbia Spectator. The suspects sold in fraternity houses, dormitories and other places on campus cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, Adderall and LSD which is what they were charged with. This includes 22 year old Michael Wymbs who's a former student council member and 20 year old Adam Klein, Chris Coles, Jose Perez, and Harrison David.

Wymbs had been expected to be released Tuesday night after being the only one prepared to pay the $25,000 bail said a spokesperson for the Narcotics Prosecutor’s Office. The other four were taken to Rikers Island. The main target of the investigation had been really David. The only person to sell cocaine was David. In fact, in Sept, he sold nearly 20 grams for $880. Undercover detectives made their first a number of purchases from David, and also the other four were later added to the string of drug deals in October and Nov.. Altogether, since the investigation began in July, the students tied to the Columbia University drug bust made nearly $11,000 in sales to undercover officers.

Going from good to bad

The students associated with the Columbia University drug bust were spoken about in a good manner by defense lawyers when it comes to grades and extracurricular. Seems like like the students within the Columbia University drug bust were associated with extracurricular and had good grades. This is what defense lawyers made clear. Michael Wymbs said to a detective that his father would not pay for his tuition forcing him to sell drugs, although he was the Engineering Student Council’s vice president in 2007 to 2008 for his class. Chris Coles said that he had to pay for tuition by selling drugs too although he was like Wymbs in that he had a previously clean record and a 3.5 GPA. Jose Perez (aka Stephan Vincenzo) is a prestigious Gates Millenium Scholar who has "limited financial ability,” reports to Bloomberg.

Tuition for the 2010-11 academic year is about $41,600 according to the university site.
