http://ps3.ign.com/articles/115/1151130p1.html I personally did not get a chance to play due to not finding out about it in time and unwilling to pay a lot of money to get it online. I plan to play the hell of it as lot of my friends recommended it to me.

Not directly, but I did copy my Final Fantasy 9 discs to my PSP and played it for a while a couple years ago.
(Obviously not through 100% legitimate means, but hell, they were my FF9 discs, I didn't download them.)
Edit: And I'm pretty sure that all PS3s are backwards compatible with PS1 games (some graphical glitches may exist). It's the PS2 compatibility that only exists in a few PS3 models.
Good game, but not one that I think I could slog though again. I loved some of the themes in it. I gather that it borrowed heavily from philosophical and religious sources, but since I can't read either of those without my eyes rolling back in my head, it was all new and exciting to me (loved the idea that god was a WMD, and the idea that "returning to god" was meant in a very literal and creepy way).
But the experience was a bit over saturated with those themes and references for my tastes, and a bit too inconsistent (which was probably due to its budget issues, I gather). I think I would have enjoyed it more as a smaller, more concentrated game.
I do look back on it fondly, though. It didn't pull any punches...it assumed the player was intelligent enough to appreciate a heady, metaphysical storyline. There aren't many games like that.
I would rebuy it if I didn't have CFW with ISos of most of my PS1 games. I rate Xenogears higher then any FF on PS1 easy. I've owned 4 copies of the game First one got scratched buy a friend, 2nd one stolen 3rd one was a used copy and had a terrible scratch, 4th copy is still safe in it's case. And let me tell you it wasn't easy finding copies back in the day.
One major drawback is the amount of narrative without having a way to speed up text, otherwise the story is one of the best, gameplay is solid. I've played and beat it 5/6 times I think.
It has its flaws, I will admit but other then a few small gripes. Unfortunately it seems to be a game you either love, or hate.
Out of 10 I would give it a solid 9.5 but I'm biased.
