I'm a terrible Shen. I can Gangplank, Karthus and Kass, but the only tank I can run is jungle Ram and Mord...

I just played a game that lasted an hour and 15 minutes. The only reason it took that long was because my team was all squishies :/
At least your game wasn't 15:62 due to bad bads who do bad because they are bad.

I downloaded this tonight, it is pretty fun. I feel like a liability to every team I join at the moment, but I have still won every fight so far (all 4 of them). I am playing as Twisted Fate at the moment, the short cooldown teleport and massive damage once youve got him a few items is definitely fun.
My last game I finished as the highest level with double the building kills of the rest of my team put together, but I also had by far the highest deaths in the whole match. I was a bit reckless.

That feeling will persist for quite some time. And with the ELO matching system you'll eventually be doing well half the time and doing horribly the other half.
I'm continually surprised by LoL and the MOBA genre because it doesn't seem like a game that new players should like. Sure it's different and therefore novel, but the learning curve is ridiculous and even then you're forced into a situation where about the half the time you are going to lose, and it's not a very fun game to lose.
But it's fairly popular, which just means I know fudge all about game design.

Yes, but the limited number of things you can do makes it seem easier, and you actually feel like you learn something when you die instead of just getting gibbed like in WoW/CS/etc. Unless you're getting face-rolled, or something.

How can you fail as Karthus?
If you are bad you can just play suicide Karthus and still face-roll some kills.

I have no clue how you are dying that much using him. Everytime I see him used, they are going like 20+/3- K/D.
