I recently added the map mod... omg, what a difference it makes - this is okay right? I mean, I know in XI windower is tolerated but not accepted at all by the devs. Are mods officially okay with this game? And are there other mods I should be checking out if so?

Yeah, using add-ons is ok.

A lot of people swear by Profit UI or Drums UI. I don't use any custom UIs except for EQ2Maps, which is almost a must.

This is the best place to find add-ons - http://www.eq2interface.com/

What's not okay is mods which automate game play for you. I'm not talking macro strings, I'm talking things that let you walk away and still play.

The devs LOVE EQ2 Maps :) That's why we have a link to EQ2Interface above (that, and they're a ZAM site).

The maps mod makes such a huge difference, I was struggling to find mobs requested by factions. How does one make macros? Is that an add on too? I am just wondering since my bars are getting really full and I would love to be able to take my buffs off (for example) ad just use a macro to apply them instead of having them cluttering up a whole bar. I like how many abilities there are but I use on a few of them with any regularity so it seems silly to have them sitting there cluttering up my screen and taking up space

It's on your Socials menu (the one that has all the emotes!) EQ2 menu > Socials > Macros tab

You can right click any spell/ability on your hotbar and select 'turn into a macro"...or just make them from the socials page (forget the command). Also if you are running out of hotbars you can open up to 10 or 12 total (forget), by right clicking any open hotbar, and select new hotbar.

You can only put 2 casting abilities into a macro...so while this can be useful to safe space, later in the game when you fight things that can dispel your buffs, you may want to keep each buff as its own separate button simply so you can see what you need to recast.

Things I sometimes play...

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
"I want to be a unicorn!"
"Awww, why's that?"........
"So I can stab people with my face."

So using a mouse to click abilities is pretty much a must, eh? That's too bad. Not a huge fan of using mouse in games. I will get used to it I suppose.
