I bought an Everquest 2 box because it was cheap at GameStop and I was annoyed with square-Enix (ff mmo player here). Since then it has been sitting in my desk, as I've wanted to wait till I had the time to get into it and give it a fair shot.

I just have a few questions -

Will I be able to start my character ( on the included "free trial") as any race/class or do I have to pay to unlock/get gold membership? The website isn't terribly clear about it.

I don't have a credit card, will I be able to sub? I can get my gf to put it on hers but that is a pain.

Is the game gamepad friendly? I work at a computer and my hands get achy, so a gamepad is a real plus.

And.... Any advice?

It must be an older box, as all the content except the last two expansions are not free. EQ2 went to a free-to-play model last year.

As a free player with silver membership some race and classes will be restricted for you. You can unlock then individually or just get a better membership.

You can avoid using a credit card by buying a Station Cash card and using that to pay your sub. If you can't get one you can probably get a pre-paid VISA to pay with.

Advice? Just jump in, have fun!

So, it appears my box (which cost 9.99) came with a month gold membership - which is sweet - so I've got myself a froggie warden.

I guess this means I will forever be at least silver. So buying the box was totally worth it.

If I don't continue to pay subs will my frog still be playable (since I believe it is one of the "locked" races?)

If I get into the game I will probably sub but I am just curious cause I might only sub during months I will have time to play a bunch. It would suck if my main character was locked. Also, just looking at some of the spells and stuff available for my character - I'm super stoked! I love games where there is tons of abilities.

Also, do I really get a rez spell at level 8? That's hot!

Also my box was supposed to come with a mount - is there something I should know about getting it?

I believe that if your sub lapses you'll have to at least buy a one-time unlock for frogloks. I might be wrong about that tho.

To get any free goodies you have coming to you, type /claim. This is also where veteran's rewards and other stuff can show up: http://eq2.zam.com/wiki/Claim_Items

You'd have to unlock frogs and the warden class. But once that's unlocked, yes, you can play free.

And if you have a recurring gold sub, you'll get 500 SC per month. That's a pretty nice perk. But it only works if your sub is recurring. If you sub, cancel, sub, cancel, etc., you won't get the SC.

I'm guessing that won't work with station cash? I'd prefer not to use the credit card to make it recurring since that means dragging my gf into it, which is a little pathetic, asking my gf to pay for my mmo

thanks for clairifying that. I'll probably mostly sub but unlock those things just in case I decide to ease up on it here or there.

No, you'll HAVE to use Station Cash to unlock those. Smiley: grin

Pretty much everything can be bought with SC. Game time, unlockers, expansions, fluff items... all of it. So you can buy SC cards at places like Gamestop, Walmart, etc. and never have to use a CC at all. And if you have a Walmart close, I'd check into SC cards there. You get 2000 for $15 USD, and that's 500SC free.

http://eq2.zam.com/wiki/housing_(eq2) This should answer a lot of your housing questions as well, as for placing and moving items:

To turn a house item, use the scroll wheel on your mouse. Scrolling up will spin it to the right while scrolling down will spin it to the left. To resize a house item (most can be resized but a few cannot), hold down the shift key and scroll your mouse wheel up (to make it bigger) or down (to make it smaller). You can also "lift" a house item from where it would place by default by holding down the ctrl key and scrolling your mouse wheel up (to make it rise upwards) or down (to lower it).

Omg you rock, and thanks for the linky. Is there one that explains different "notes" on items - like I tried searching "treasured" to understand what it means but I am getting unrelated results. Sorry to be pesky.

Also loving my pets, the box I bought came with a robot, a monkey and a cockatrice... and I bought a couple dragons because I am a sucker. Sucker. Sucker.

Treasured/Legendary/Fabled tags, pretty much all explain an items rarity or value..in that order. Also Silver and truly Free accounts can only use Treasured gear and items (Legendary/Fable house items dont count so happy decorating or what have you). I think thats what you meant.

It's easy to reroll on any server you want, not that Oasis shouldn't be a good home. If you paid to unlock a race/class it will forever be unlocked as well

Oasis is a good server, that's where I started at then transferred my main char to Everfrost later on when I found out some old EQ1 friends played there.

yeah I already bought three of those baskets.... so server transfers can happen? I am pretty happy where I am atm (got taken in by a nice guild) but who knows how things go in the future, right?

I was super lucky cause my paypal bank transfer (which I had actually done to buy more crysta) had just cleared and I was like "whatever, going to buy some SC" and it just so happened it was "double SC" times. Sweet. Not complaining about that.

I am having a hard time convincing myself NOT to buy a unicorn mount.

If you're crazy about tradeskilling and don't mind grinding faction, there's a unicorn mount for the Far Seas Supply Division that you can get at 40k faction; it also gives a boost to harvesting skills. You'd have to be at least a level 50 tradeskiller and do the Ship Out quest first though.

Yes, there are transfer tokens available on the Marketplace, it's 2500SC each character. I think you need to have an account for a month or some such before they appear, but if you're happy where you are then of course stay there. Smiley: grin

If you ever played WoW, Rift, or LotRO (I think they use the same system), Treasured = green gear, Legendary = blue gear, Fabled = purple gear. Mastercrafted is its own tier, it usually falls somewhere between Treasured and Legendary.

Glad you're enjoying the game! Your first alt has to be made on Everfrost or we'll hunt you down. Smiley: mad
