Do you have a link to this information that states FFXI was developed for the PS2? It came out two or three years earlier on the PC than on the PS2. Why?
I don't have a link but I remember the release well. It was released on the PS2 about year before the PC... in Japan. It was then released on the PC in the US (which at the time our MMO market was PC only, so this would seem to make sense, from a marketing perspective, if you're targeting the US MMO crowd with your game), then followed by the PS2 release in the US, followed by the 360 release.
You are correct if just viewing it in terms of the US but it was a huge game with many patches and even an expansion (Rise of the Zilart came with my box at release) before it even hit the US.
The other reason a lot of people didn't like the fact it was a port to the PC is because it always meant that graphics had to be dumbed down to fit in the memory footprint of a PS2, not a (much) more powerful PC. Why do you think there were only 6 or 7 different mob types in a zone? It was always attributed to limitations of the PS2.
In my opinion, I'd prefer them to stick with a platform and be able to develop the best game for that platform as opposed to having to hit a lowest common denominator. No matter what the game, which is why I feel it's best to leave EQ2 where it's at, on the PC.
