I think he's talking about a gamepad like the ones attached to an XBox or Playstation. I also think you're out of luck. FFXI (for example) was developed from the ground up to work on PS2 with a gamepad, EQ2 is not available on any console and was made strictly for the PC. I'm pretty sure there is no support for gamepads in EQ2.
Once you get into the game you're not going to want to use one anyway. Just off the top of my head there is a lot of mouse clicking required: NPC Dialog trees, item action options, scrollbars, setting prices, checkbox options (e.g. not for sale), quantity sliders, pet commands, etc, etc, etc. Not to mention all the things you need to right click to do. There is no auto-targetting, no fixed target reticule for pointing (only a movable mouse cursor) and way too many key press options to cover with a gamepad unless someone came out with one that has 100 buttons. IMHO if you found a way to make a gamepad work you would be gimping yourself if you use it.
