However, if you take your time, read the NPC dialogue, explore all zones, and talk with other players, you'll find a very rewarding experience.
Most definitely true. Even small things like books you find as collectibles or as quest rewards can become an interesting thing to read. I've found a rather hilarious book (reward for a collection quest actually) about an Orc architect detailing the events during the construction of the bridge in the zone Zek, the Orcish Wastes. It ended with him in jail as the bridge killed off a couple of hundred Orc warriors.
There are tragic tales to be found (concerning Kayne Bayle for instance), humorous, mythological (with the creation tale according to the Harpies for instance)...
And that is just one part of a rather extensive tale and background story you can find all over the game. The prime example I can give would be Nektropos Castle, that is one zone that is a tale on itself, beautifully done.
(edited to add: there is grinding in this game, no question about it, but you have to get your xp from somewhere, at least there are normally always quests to cover that grinding. It can be hard at times, there seem to be problem levels that fall in between zones, too high for one and just a bit too low for other zones for easy and swift hunting, but all in all, in my 57 levels I've never really experienced much actual grinding, or at least the feel of it)
