Hmmmmm. What? You have 2 characters and you've figured out WOW. Well congratulations!!!
First off, "killing things specifically for quests" is bullsh!t. Straight up... I know what you mean, but if you wanna get technical you can litterally just do writs over and over and say the same EXACT thing for EQ2.
High end WOW is ALL about raiding the same exact Zone over and over until your group/guild is good enough to advance to the next tier of raid zone(no s.) The reason you do that is so you can PVP better...
The quests in WOW are very very similar to EQ1 quests, except you get a quest book!! Oh boy!! Doing a pure quest count you will find EQ2 exceeding marginally over WOW in quest count.
WOW can be tons of fun, don't get me wrong. But HONESTLY, having a 56 mage (which I'm not even proud of having, I'm just trying to unvalidate your comment) I could name what everyone around me was wearing (because there was litterally 1 or 2 choices that were any good for each level range.) It was very disheartening. In EQ2, it is true that there is a lot of crafted gear floating around, but on the whole (and especially with the non-tank classes) you can see a HUGE array of different - very different - gearsets and statsets.
Now WOW has been trying to up their gearcount, but so has everquest! For every set of unique looking gear that WOW has, EQ2 has it's own. The next expac promises to up that count even more.
I have MAD respect for Blizzard (have since Diablo1/WC2 days - most likely a fan before you were) but WOW is like a long, drawn out game of DoTA on Warcraft 3... it's a PVP Fest. It can be very exciting and rewarding... but let's not kid ourselves on which game has more PVE/Quest content.
