A Few questions concerning EQ2Follow

I dont know a whole lot about computers myself, and have a few questions about proper hardware to run the game, and actual questions about the game itself.. so here goes!

1) I am planning on buying a Desktop PC to use for numerous things, including to play games on. I was on the Dell.com website, and they had a "Gaming" section. They have a model: XPS 400 Labeled Entry Level gaming. I was wondering, for those of you who know your computers, if this system, would be able to run EQ2 and also would be suitable for other programs?

2) I have only played games on a console before. I have been playing FFXI online for the PS2, and have grown bored of it, after almost 2 years of playing it. Ive heard all about the WoW hype, howver, the graphics seem cartoon like, and EQ2 looks better. I was wondering, to get xp, can you gain lvls solo? Does it take a long time to get a lvl? I have 2 characters: 72 beastmaster and a 73 blackmage in FFXI, and it takes about 6+ hours to gain a level once in the 70's...

To ADD to the questions above:

DO the NPC's have actual voices? or is it just text, like most games?

Is there load time in between different zones, or is it free roaming, as in EQOA for the PS2(with the exception of coaching, if its in this game)?

Do you have to use a Key board to play, or is the a controller like PS2's, that can be use to play through the PC?

I apologize for all the questions, just curious, and very interested in playing this game, as I enjoyed the Everquest for the PS2, Thankyou!

You might get more help with the performance question if you posted some details about the PC. I would venture to say it will run the game, but how well is unknown. Look to get at least 1 gig of ram and a good video card for good performance. But my friend has run the game on a geforce 2 video card and 512 ram 56k modem, however its nearly impossible to walk through city zones and im sure the expansions would run horrible.

GAining exp wise you can solo all the way up, however grouping is MUCH more rewarding both in exp and loot. There are plenty of quests in the game that can be done both solo and with groups, once again the group quests obviously pay out better. Time wise you can reach lvl 20 in no time. About every 10 levels the exp you gain per kill goes down. ITs really hard to pinpoint the exact speed etc, but I would venture to say its on par with most MMORPG. 50+ seems to be ALOT slower though. at lvl 40 to 49ish I was getting about 1% exp per kill while in groups, however at 50+ I get about .25%.

Many NPC's have voices, however not all of them. There is always text to go along with the voices though. Zone wise there is alot of zoning and depending on your PC it could take awhile. I have noticed zoning takes ALOT longer since recent server mergers/expansion was implemented. You have your basic out door zones which are huge (such as Antonia, Thundering Steppes, Zek, Feerott, etc etc.) You also have the newbie zones which are small zones build off the main citys. Of course you have your dungeons etc. They all require clicking some sort of door usually that loads up a new zone.

I have never tried eq2 with a anything but a keyboard and mouse. You can get by without touching the keyboard alot though. About the only time I use the keyboard is to talk with group members etc. Movement and attack keys etc I use my mouse. I would say if you had a good gamepad you could program it to be pretty decent.

I am not good on computer specs, so I wi;ll let someone else answer that question.

For XP yes you can solo, most open areas (non dungeon) have places where you can solo. I havent reached the upper echelon of levels, but in the forties if you actually focus on leveling it is not too bad.

Yes there are NPC that talk, usually to get your attention to give quests.

I havent used a controller for EQ2, but I would say a keyboard is manditory, even if you just use it for communicating.

The Zones are not open ended like eqoa. There are boarders where you will be loading. But the zones are a nice size and you shouldnt have to zone much.

ok here are some of the spec's on the system I purchased:

Pentium® D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.80GHz, 800FSB)

Video Card:
256MB PCI Expressâ„¢ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) nVidia GeForce 6800

Memory:
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 at 533MHz- 2DIMMs

HardDrives:
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cacheâ„¢

I also have DSL for a internet Connection

Yeah... Played FFXI for almost two years on PS2, It was amazing for a long time, but now it just... hurts. ><;
The EQII controlls arent as terrible as the FFXI PC controls, thank god. Much, much easier to get used to.
The game is updating at home as I speak, hopefully will get to play tonight. (Reinstalling/resubscribing)
Any my PC is worse than yours and EQII ran great, you'll be fine.

If you don't like the EQ2 UI, consider getting a new one. There are many at EQ2Interface.com, and many of them are very popular.

Several folks at this board use the Thor UI (thanks to OBD). It auto-updates and has it's own support forum at the site.

And while you are there, also go to EQ2Maps.com (linked from the above site) and download the maps for in-game play. A MUST-have for any adventurer.
