I took the survey, it was a little over 3 minutes and I was done - 7 questions total...very easy. I particulary liked the identical questions pertaining to real-life and in-game persona. I was a little surprised at the difference of my answers - but I guess that is to be expected.
I know that aspiring students struggle to find topics to research, especially ones that interest them. And since all students are not connected like the Borg, each must effectively "start from scratch". A university in California won't say, "You know, LSU is doing the same research so let's not do ours."
Until textbooks are written about the effects of MMO's and they are published into the mass public, I predict that many more students and scholars will conduct research.
Just because we say we tire of these surveys does not mean they are now not important. On the contrary, I think this research needs to be done.
There are many impacts of MMO's have on society, culture, and individuals that has only been revealed in loose news reports. Remember the Korean guy that killed his friend for selling his virtual sword? That's a serious issue. Leroy Jenkins as a question on Jeopardy? That's a culture swing.
And as the research is done to figure out why games do what they do, companies will take that research to figure new and better ways to gain and keep customers.
I recommend we all take the survey so more institutions can do research - help a student out. :) It can't hurt, right?
