I play a ranger and did in EQ as well. We don't get SoW here, (in fact, we don't share any spell lines with the druids in EQ2), but do have a speed buff called "Pathfinding"
Here, we are masters of the bow and deal out some amazing damage in ranged combat. In addtion, every ranger I know dual wields and we are able to output some of the highest DPS in the game.
One of the big differences is that in EQ2 everyone has spells or combat arts to cast. For the ranger, these are trick moves with blade and bow. We have ways to offload aggro onto the tank and ways to stealth in combat and attack from behind. Here, we share more with rogues (also part of the scout archtype) than we do with druids, (who are part of the priest archtype)
There are things I miss about my EQ ranger days but there is much more I like even better.
Earlier this evening, I was telling another EQ ranger friend, I don't think I can ever go back... but I don't think I really want to!
One additional point - since you don't pick ranger till lvl 20, you could start out a scout and still change your mind until around lvl 10. Although I knew before I even chose scout that I would end up a ranger!
